In the 1980’s there were two boys who went to my school. Their mother had died and they lived with their father. They were starving, filthy, and totally neglected. My mum would bring them home to feed them. They told me their Dad had no money because he gave it all to Scientology. As a kid I thought that sounded ridiculous but never forgot it. Only when I heard your accounts of how Scientology will strip its members of all their funds and their utter disregard for the care and protection of children that I realised it was true. So so sad.

I know so little of the history here in Australia, other than Dianetics salespeople worked near to my workplace in the 80s and staff warned each other to avoid taking their "free personality test". Edit, I have read Steve Cananne's book. Well worth it for everyone, and covers much of early Scientology as well.

I took the free personality and “IQ” test as a bored teenager. Of course they told me that I was messed up and needed to do their courses. They would not let up when I told them I was a kid and had no money, suggesting I get it off my parents, my friends, anyone and everyone. It was hilarious to keep shutting them down until I eventually said I just didn’t want to do their stupid courses and they needed to stop harassing me. Loud enough for all the other marks in the room to hear. They got rid of me pretty quickly after that.

Steve has done an awesome job with this story. Some info sharting: I'm former naval officer and I was looking into Scientology as a possible source that hires out private intel firms like the ones we learned about in the Harvey Weinstein case. I kinda figured out that Scientology was some sort of scam, so I pulled a Rex Beaver and used their tactics against them. There is an episode of the show King of the Hill titled 'Peggy's Fan Fair' that shows how entertainers will engage in plagiarism. In that episode, Peggy Hill sends country music star Randy Travis an unsolicited song idea. Travis uses the idea and doesn't cite Peggy Hill's letter. No one in Peggy's life belives her when she says she wrote the song idea and they end up sending her to a shrink thinking she's delusional. Hank eventually figures out she's telling the truth. I sorta thought that episode was just telling the truth about Hollywood - that they often plagiarize material, not because they are out of ideas, but as some sort of sick sport. Also, I had something similar happen to me when I wrote a comment on the Saturday Night Live Hulu pages. It was something mundane about credit card debt, but I thought is was weird that they used it. Seemed like is was a threat. So, I kept suggesting ideas and they kept using them. The point is that I suggested several ideas for many of the Scientology celebrities and a bunch were aimed at Tom Cruise. The movie 'The Edge of Tomorrow' was one of them and it's looping plot was really about my realization that I'm not going to get very far trying to expose Fair Game on my own. I expected that I would get my butt kicked over and over and over trying to get any traction on this case. The full story becomes a long narrative, but the gist is that I have a solution to 'Fair Game' but it's not pretty. Scientology isn't the only one that does this sort of thing and plenty of corporations and governmental institutions do the same exact thing. Since the internet became widely used in the 90s, they've had to ratchet up their tactics because the risk of exposure would be catastrophic for them. This has led to some unbelievable behavior and the truth about this needs to come out.

I absolutely loved this. I remember the Scientology building in Melbourne. My cousin and her friend went in for a personality test, because they thought it wound be fun. By the the way, they were teenagers then are now in their late 50's ... For the the next 20 years they constantly sent them letters and brochures. I remember the opening night of Planet Hollywood in Sydney. I was standing in a huge crowd outside, and a charismatic guy approached me. He handed me a book on Scientology with Dianetics in the title. He was charming and played into his role so well, completely taking focus as we all stood around waiting for something to happen. I listened, I nodded, and then I realized that this was a recruitment tactic. I backed away politely, still holding the book, but working out a way to get away from this guy, who, due to the crowd, had enough going on. I realized there were more of them, but being also used to the Hare Krishna's that used to populate those same streets, it just was what it was. I am glad, because now I realize how much me and my group of friends were the perfect age then for targets. None of us succumbed to it. The book was thrown away, and I didn't give it much thought after that. I am so glad that you and Mike and also Steve and many others now are doing your best to expose and stop what they do.
