Fun fact: I had atypical tuberculosis in my neck as a kid and had to get lymph nodes taken out from it and it was from the same bacteria

Yes there were leprosy islands in hawaii.. we learned abt them in history.. unfortunately never heard of her though.. I'm fr hawaii btw :)

The leprosy islands were real up until a scarily recent time and they were pretty godawful which is where the simpsons deviates. Ask A Mortician did a video about it (she's from hawaii!) and she goes into the nitty gritty. Her videos are not for the faint of heart but she is one of my all time favorite channels on youtube so if you are fascinated with death history and death culture (from a mostly scientific/skeptic's perspective btw) you should really check her out!

I was told in school that chlorine gas literally dissolves your lungs. Like liquefies them. So im guessing luke got lucky this didnt happen

Other than mentioning the subject of the video Alice Ball...and giving a few stats...was disappointed that it wasnt more about her.

There isn’t too much in the way of biographies on Alice Ball since she died at 24. There are only a handful of reliable sources, almost none of which are more than a few paragraphs long

This episode is great I love your podcast by the way! I've been doing a bunch of research for fun about povelia island and the plague and plague doctors so it fits really well with that
