I personally think this song is about World War II. "The bees" is the Axis. "The sky wasn't big enough for them all" Lebensraum, the German policy of getting "breathing room" for the German people. "The birds" the Allies. "They got help from below" from the people of their colonies such as in Africa and India. "From dirty paws" America "and the creatures of snow" The USSR. "And for a while things were cold" the war in the Eastern Front against the USSR. German men were dying from cold and hunger. "The forest that once was green was colored black by those killing machines" the destruction of the Russian countryside by both Soviet and German soldiers. "But she and her furry friends took down the Queen Bee and her men" The turning of the war and capture of Berlin, the death of Hitler.

Hymie Franco I believe the beginning is stating that we are all animals in a sense, the human animal. And that as a whole we are all inter-connected. Such that we could easily envision what it is like for the creatures of the forest, that perhaps the animals and plants, being inter-connected as well, told the story of a terrible war in forest to a dragonfly, that returned to the humans and conveyed such an incredible story to them. Speaking on a spiritual level that we are all connected, and as we have this spiritual connection we can sense what the other wants to convey. Or something to that effect I might think. But this is just my theory, take it for what you will.

This feels Naustaligic. I use to play with the dragonflies outside my home, near the river. They always followed me and my neighbor had a dog that was always dirty when I saw it. It jumped on me and smeered dirt on my dress, So I called the dog dirty dog, or dirty paws. This is a huge coincidence, I really love this song.
