We’ve heard for years about the dangers of eating too much fat or salt. But there have never been recommended limits for sugar on Canadian food labels, despite emerging research that suggests the sweet stuff may be making more of us fat and sick. In the fifth estate’s season premiere, Gillian Findlay digs into the surprising science - and the reaction from the food industry - to reveal The Secrets of Sugar. Has the sugar industry been hiding an unsavoury truth from consumers?
A small but influential group of medical researchers is stirring up the health debate, linking sugar not just to rising obesity rates but also to a host of diseases including cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.
We put a family of four on a healthy diet to try to beat their sugar habit and track the surprising results. We talk to leading scientists - and their critics. And we ask the food industry why those ingredient labels are far from clear when it comes to how much sugar is really on your plate.

Glad at 20 that I figured this out. After going Keto and reading every label, I've become aware of just how processed and loaded with sugar our foods are. Oils, meats, nearly everything. I rarely eat anything out of a package anymore, and only if the ingredients meet my standards. I've seen many people give up cigarettes, and other drugs, but rarely do you find someone willing to commit to giving up sugar or refined carbohydrates from their diet. Best health choice I've ever made, plus I learned to cook.

I just started eating low carb, low (almost no) sugar - and already, I feel better. I'm eating mostly fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, etc. Here's the biggest surprise: The food tastes fantastic! I no longer am hungry between meals, my energy and sense of well-being is so much improved, and I can think clearly. Although I'm not diabetic, I was definitely heading there. The hardest part has been figuring out how to cook things. I sit down and cut veggies and/or fruit into whatever I plan to eat that day. Sitting helps make it easy. I never cooked, just grabbed convenience food. Now, I actually enjoy cooking. Before I did this, I thought I was eating well (no junk food, no fast-food, no candy, no desserts, no sodas, etc.) But what I didn't realize is how loaded processed food is with sugar and carbs. It's unbelievable.

If I mess up, I'm not hard on myself. I make it a point to not eat anything else with sugar and fast for at least 16 hours to burn some of those carbs. Just don't give up. As an African, who grew up in the farm,I must say I didn't know what processed food was When growing up. Everything has fresh from the farm or market. Things like chocolate we had them once in a while, special occasion. And it was not much. I must admit growing up with less did shape me, when it comes to choice of food I eat today. My favourite place in a store is the vegetable section. I can say, am not tempted when it comes to sweets. So yes I do think we need to learn how to live with less, having few choices can help us, that is if we can't be disciplined enough.

This is a great video that provides a comprehensive look into the consumption of eating too much sugar. It sheds light on the research linking sugar to obesity and other diseases, as well as how the food industry has responded to it. I appreciate learning about the effects of a sugar-free diet on a family and the questions about why food labels are not clear when it comes to sugar levels. Very informative and thought-provoking!

Advertising lures people to foods that are loaded with sugar just like it did in the past with selling cigarettes until the Surgeon General determined that smoking was dangerous to your health, and they stopped the cigarette commercials on television in the 1970s. When SHE sipped and I saw the look on her face, I was shocked. I did detox after that but have since fallen OFF THE WAGoN😳. When I was growing up, I use to get corn bread a few times a week, instead of bread, but this corn bread did not come out of a box, and this particular recipe had no sugar in it of any kind, or oil except for butter, needless to say this stuff was delicious. As the years went by, I could never get corn bread i.e., muffins, sticks, mini's etc., without it having sugar in it. Today just about every processed food product contains some form of sugar, it's almost impossible to avoid, the only chance one has, to control the sugar in your diet is to prepare your own meals, and control what goes in your food!

The recommended amount for women is no more than 25grams a day. And that was only a tiny snack, i‘m sure theres sugar in other foods that I ate without even thinking about it as well. Shop as though you've went out on a hunt and picked from the garden assuming one eats meat. I grew up on a farm in the late 60s into the 70s.. We had chickens, turkeys, geese, cows, pigs and horses as well as huge vegetable gardens and huge wheat fields. We made our own bread, butter and drank raw milk. We hunted ducks, rabbits, deer, moose as well as fished. I don't think we ever went to a grocery store back then that I can remember. We also picked gooseberries, strawberries, Saskatoon berries, pin cherries, blueberries and chokecherries the we preserved and made pies and jams with. This was all in Saskatchewan Canada, btw. The cellar was always well stocked for winter and everyone was healthy as a horse as we worked most all of the day, everyday but for us young ones, it was fun. I sure miss those times. When I was really little I would go to the coop to collect eggs, every now and then I'd find a goose egg in the chicken coop, it was the highlight of my life at the time. lol I remember getting so excited because i didn't know that the geese were laying those huge eggs. Those geese use to chase me and my younger brother all the time, we were so scared of them but in a fun way as we'd scare ourselves. lol

Hi.. I'm not being rude or cheeky.. But can I ask why you say that? If you are eating moderate protein and veggies and low sugar fruits, along with healthy fats. A good amount of veggies accumulate to low carbs after you subtract the fiber.

Very informative. Doing some online research on sugar intake led me finally to this broadcast. I do not drink pop and I only started to drink coffee with 2 tsp. of sugar in the past 6 years. I use maple syrup as an alternative to the turbinado sugar I use. I am a label reader and have been for years and there is almost nothing I buy that does not have sugar added - even my steamfresh frozen veggies have a little sugar. I pretty much buy organic when I can but even then what does "organic" mean?? I was happy to see the couple were able to reduce their oiverall health over the 3 weeks. Hope they keep it up.

I should add the first two weeks is a little rough, in fact harder than when I quit smoking 6 years ago. The addiction to sugar is real. But after that and with the positive health changes , I was so happy.

I've been trying to get my wife and kids off of the sugar. So far it has back fired. My family isn't giving up sugar so easily. I've been switching to lower sugar and sugar alternatives to try and wean off. I've quit smoking and drinking alcohol. This sugar is a whole new beast.

Scott Ashe how are you? I quit smoking recently and found I cannot process sugar as well without smoking. Research suggests nicotine helps process caffeine and sugar. Deep down I have always known I am more addicted to sugar than any other substance. It is insane how sugar is in everything. And I mean nearly everything.
