Wow. I just finished reading 'Your Inner Fish', by Neil Shubin, and this video goes right along with that. Genes don't necessarily follow the 'use it or lose it' idea. They can get used for new things, or for nothing at all. Parts of the jawbones in lizards evolved into the inner ear bones in our heads. Why? Why not, I guess?
@liambohl
@liambohl Жыл бұрын
You have it backwards. The 3 inner ear bones that help mammals hear much better are *exapted* (repurposed) from jaw bones in our tetrapod ancestors. Edit: I misread the previous comment, and they had it right after all.

It's so odd how certain genes can influence things in a body that don't seem to have anything to do with each other. Like how "hairless" domestic dogs usually have tooth problems because the genes that control fur growth also play a part in tooth development for some random reason.

There's a strong link between white fur, blue eyes, and deafness, too. This is for sure connected in the case of domesticated dogs and cats. My guess would be that the genes that regulate fur and eyecolor also regulate deafness. Though, that guess is only an educated guess.

@@BROODxBELEG From what I've read, it seems they alternate between them. They'll use one then switch to the other one. Apparently only one side can be used at a time, which means no they can't use them to have a threesome with two other snakes at once. Despite this though, some species of snakes, usually garter snakes still get together into "mating balls", though this is mostly a competition of males to get to a single female, which can be from 7 snakes to larger groups of about 100 in some places.

You'll have to look up the word etymology, see which language it originates from. Like, many people overcorrect octopuses to octopi, but that's incorrect. Cacti is correct, though. (I looked it up and turns out both words come from Greek... But, octopus entered English once it was already a part of Modern Latin in mid 18th century? While cactus went from Greek, Latin, to English in 17th century...) Penis was adapted from Latin in the late 16th century. So yeah, I guess the plural should be penes?

I mean, isn't a very small percentage of our genome actually active? So why not for snakes? Neat to learn more about reptiles!
@codahighland
@codahighland Жыл бұрын
No, that's a misunderstanding of what non-coding DNA does. It doesn't define genes or proteins, but that doesn't mean it isn't used. There are epigenetic factors and other things in there; it's not fully understood, but it's definitely not unused.

I never heard of hemipenes till now and I just gotta say: they simultaneously look really cool and really scary. Female snakes must really get the short end of the stick in the snake reproduction bargain...
@miriamgarber2819
@miriamgarber2819 Жыл бұрын
In many species it actually doesn't seem to be too bad, as spiky as the hemipenes shown look, I really wish they had been labled! But yeah, the presence of hemiclitori (and the rather impressive size of them in some species) indicate that female pleasure is likely a factor in mating, and in most snakes the female has a lot of agency in whether she wants to mate and with what male. Ducks on the other hand...
@panq8904
@panq8904 Жыл бұрын
Trust me, as a hobbyist breeder, females get super eager and locks (mating sessions for non-reptile folks) can last literal days. I'm pairing two of mine right now who are very into each other, every time they're introduced its usually 2 days before I can put the male back home because they're locked for so long. Also in the majority of snake species females tend to be bigger than males, so if for whatever reason they weren't in the mood they can simply ignore the male in most cases.

“Phalluses are truly beneficial”. 😂. I guess so😂
@emilysmith2965
@emilysmith2965 Жыл бұрын
I’m thankful for the existence of phalluses if they meant that we didn’t have to be fish. Similarly, I’m grateful for menstruation because without the ability to do that, we wouldn’t be able to grow the ridiculously large and complex placenta necessary to gestate a fetus with such a large and complex brain. It needs a lot of oxygen, meaning that we evolved away from having a mere “estrous cycle” like most placental mammals. There’s too much endometrial material to easily reabsorb when we don’t have a pregnancy. But I’m still pretty “meh” about phalluses in practice, and periods are actually the Devil. Sooo this is the best way for me to appreciate those things 😂

@petergray7576
@petergray7576 Жыл бұрын
Bean contain a sugar called Raffinose, for which humans lack the enzyme needed to break it down into a form our intestinal tract can absorb. By the time this sugar reaches the large intestine, gut bacteria that do possess this enzyme break the sugar down and metabolize it, creating CO2 and methane as byproducts. Raffinose isn't the only sugar that has this effect. Inulin is the polysaccharide form of fructose, and many plants (including bananas, garlic and onions) will create it in lieu of starches (polysaccharide glucose) for food storage, and like raffinose humans lack the enzyme required for metabolism, but our gut bacteria aren't so limited.

"Penises are more closely tied to legs than you think." Brain immediately made an S&M correlation. No, not by experience, just a bondage association that set a series of weird questions about how that is a natural evolution for snakes. Thank you, Hank, for completely answering those questions in a most hilariously controlled and presented way. Great video.
