cats purring also help them maintain bone mass. So veterinary and medical researchers are trying to find out why and if they can reproduce this to help their patients, both two legged and four. Cats who purr a lot heal fractures faster than ones who don't. Not to mention I have a personal experience with cat purrs and sickness. My mom stressed herself out trying to finish her degree (she's in her 50s) and her stress level went high enough to trigger a shingles episode. Her cat Miss Kitty could tell she was in pain and lay across the rash purring. I'm convinced that she was trying to heal my mother, whether it worked or not. And it definitely helped my mother distress.

I've always wondered if subclinical infection with T. gondii could be tied to a human's affinity towards cats. Personally I wasn't much of a "cat person" until I started living with one, and once I did, I immediately became the primary poop-scooper of the household. I know it would be hard to pull apart what could be attributed to T. gondii versus the fondness that would naturally grow over time of being around a cat, caring for it, and getting affection from it as well. Still, I can't help but wonder if my cat has parasitically hacked my brain to love it more... seems like something my cat would do.

Toxoplasmosis doesn't occur in the typical person. We only really worry about it in pregnant women because it is it is vertically transmissible to baby if mom gets infected acutely just before or while pregnant. But really we see it in HIV. In fact once the CD4 count gets to a certain low level we get worried, because it's EVERYWHERE. Many people have it, if you tested IgG levels it can't even be counted as an infection because really you need IgM antibodies and even then as far as I know there is only one place in the country we can send patients to actually be diagnosed. I was just recently told this was wrong from an older infectious Disease physician, but in undergrad molecular biology, my professor git his PhD in Toxo and he explained that fleas pass it between rats/mice and it travels to their brains and makes them really attracted to the smell of cats (ensuring their life cycle continues on to the definitive host) which is pretty cool tbh evolution RULES. So essentially, protozoa parasite, it's everywhere, it's life cycle is complex and continuous, but generally if your immune system is strong, ur good. HIV however we start brain MRI and CSF analysis and if your CD4+ count gets as low as 100, we start prophylaxis with Bactrim (which also protects against other AIDS defining illnesses). Good news is HIV is entirely manageable now.

Apparently if it attacked even the slightest bit more to side in one of her eyes it would’ve gotten to her retina and she’d be blind in that eye. @stolenrelic7 жыл бұрын
Julius Xeno Yes, you can get tested to see if you have had or currently have a T. gondii infection. However, they don't usually test for it unless you are at risk for serious illness or are displaying symptoms of serious illness. For example, if you have AIDS, your immune system will be compromised, and you will be at risk for serious illness. Keep in mind it is much more common to get toxoplasmosis from eating raw meat or unwashed fruits or unwashed vegetables than it is to get it from a cat.
@juliusxeno65377 жыл бұрын
stolenrelic ok thanks
@descai107 жыл бұрын
There is no way to completely get rid of it, but if you are having symptoms there are medications that keep the parasite from roaming or reproducing. The parasite stays in your tissues, so most medicines can't effect it. There isn't really any cure until maybe nanobots.
@nunyobiznez8757 жыл бұрын
+stolenrelic There actually is a way to get rid of the parasite, get rid of your cat. The parasites life-cycle depends on having a cat around to complete, and without a cat around to keep reinfecting you, the parasites will eventually go away from a human, for the most part. The cysts that can POSSIBLY "infect you for life" are the dormant inactive state of the parasite, which doesn't cause the same symptoms as the active parasites. Though, they can cause problems of their own. Just one more reason to get rid of the source of your exposure as soon as possible though.
@descai107 жыл бұрын
+nunyobiznez The parasite can reproduce asexually in humans, even without having a cat. Also, you're more likely to get the disease from not washing your hands, working in gardens, or eating undercooked meat and unwashed foods, than you are getting it from your cat. Getting rid of your cat is also quite cruel. They do get emotionally attached to people.

It's worth noting a few things: -T. gondii affects mouse behavior mostly by removing their ability to smell cat pee, not making them run towards cats or anything. -About half of the world population and a tenth of the US population has this infection. About 80% of France has it (or this used to be the case), mostly from undercooked meat. -As others mentioned, you're more likely to get this from food, not cats. Cook meat fully (or just stop eating meat) and rinse veggies. An infected cat isn't always shedding oocysts and when they are, those need to sit around in the soil for a while. So if you clean the litter box daily, there's less risk. Still, women are advised to not clean litter boxes while pregnant just to be safe. This is because toxo is usually a problem if a woman is exposed for the first time while pregnant (leading to congenital toxoplasmosis in the baby).

Ok sO i've had some very odd neurological symptoms for a long time now. Odd sensations that come from my head and go through body like a huge electrical pulse, Gasping for air when I'm sleeping, Shortness of breath during the day, Not being able to feel parts of my body (left side mostly) and whole body as well. Feeling like I'm not INSIDE my own body or that it's not mine. My brain pays too much attention of my heart (not thinking about it though) and when it doesn't feel it beat there's a sensation (not a good one) that goes through my body when it doesn't feel a heartbeat. Violent muscle jerks as I'm about to fall asleep. Odd sensations as I'm about to fall asleep. Feeling of extreme weakness in my lower part of body mostly legs more so at night now but it has done it in the morning as well. Severe anxiety at times. Feeling of terror or extreme fear for no reason throughout the day (absolutely terrifying and I'm not just worried it forces me to feel this way). Feeling of a lot of pressure inside my skull (between brain and skull it feels like). Sometimes the pressure or tingly feeling is only inside the back of my head. Feels like things crawling around in my entire body I can see my lower chest and upper stomach moving in and out without me breathing. My calve muscles I can physically see them moving. Extreme confusion at times with a huge impact on vision to the point where it almost goes out completely at the same time (honestly feels like I'm having a stroke or something) at random times. Changes within my own character, lack of aggression (only when I need it). Tremendous bloating to the point where stomach is distended about 3 inches after even a small meal. Anal itching at night time. Worms coming out of my nose (white slugy looking ones). Feels like something pushing out of my ears at times although I don't think anything has came out (yet). Feels like something moving around near my heart. Severe insomia can't even sleep for more than 2 hours after staying up for 30 hours with pharma drugs. Feels like stuff moving around in my nose and worms coming out of my nose. Face twitching at night only when I'm about to fall asleep making frowny faces. Feeling of general exhaustion lay in bed most days some months. Also when I used to drink beer these symptoms would all get like 5x as bad (the neurological ones) so I quit that. I've seen a sleep doctor, a neurologist, a GP, a pulmonologist and they've ran an EEG, ambulatory EEG, An EKG, Blood tests, MRI ( on my head) and catscan on my head as well and found nothing. But this was like 1 1/2 - over 2 years ago. I had only the neurological symptoms as described until recently the pressure inside head as well as insomnia, anal itching, distended stomach. These are the recent ones. Any help would be much appreciated.

Actually, to get toxoplasmosis from a cat, the eggs have to ferment for about 3 days in cat's poop before you put them in your mouth. Also, the cats only poop out the eggs once after eating the infected animal. It's much easier and much, MUCH more likely you'll get toxoplasmosis from eating raw meat or a salad that wasn't washed properly. This unfair association between toxoplasmosis and cats rather than raw food leads to lots of cats being abandoned, especially after the owner gets pregnant. Anyway, at least you said there's no reason for that at the end of the video. Sorry about my English, it's not my first language.

Maybe a immune response may be the very reason for the damage to the brain following toxoplasmosis infection And there may be people “infected” with toxoplasmosis antibodies but with no ongoing cysts , and potentially people classed as not infected that do not have an immune response to the parasite but have cysts

Well you don’t really have to worry. You are more likely to get it from eating uncooked meat, gardening, or eating unwashed fruit or vegetables than you are from a cat. Cats only shed the oocytst (eggs) for about 10-14 days if they are infected, and the oocysts are only infective if the poop has been sitting around for 1-5 days. (That is 10-14 days only out of their entire lives, and only if they’re infected.) indoor cats have little risk in less you have a rodent infestation, and if you do, you probably have other rodent-borne diseases you’ll want to worry about. so you can still love cats and be okay.😊👍🏻

I don't like how this video seems to be presented in a way that makes cats in particular look bad and even cat owners (just to make it more hype). One of the reasons why I am not subscribed to this channel... This parasite reproduces in livestock as well, and can be transmitted by mice (for people who keeps them as pets). You may even get it from eating undercooked meat or getting blood transfusion.

I'm a middle aged man who's been around cats since literally the day I was born. If anyone has toxo, it's me. Still waiting for that extra dopamine and gaba to kick in. Edit: This video fails to mention that when a cat acquires toxo, their poop is only contagious for a couple of weeks. Yes, the toxo lives on (dormant) in the turds for several months, but assuming you scoop the box every few days, the exposure from your cat is over quickly.
