I want to see a study that compares the effects of sickly plants versus healthy plants on our mood. My theory is that from an evolutionary standpoint we have relied on the health of the plants around us to indicate the quality of our environment: healthy plants = healthy ecosystem= lots of available resources. If this is why plants have a positive impact on our mood, then it would stand to reason that sickly plants would not provide the same benefit as healthy ones do.

Plants put out chemicals and these chemicals are important for us. Also plants are living beings, although they move much slower and communicate in ways our conciousnesses doesn't recognize, other parts of our brains do. We couldn't exist without plants. In many ways they are our mothers. So being around them, absorbing those chemicals like oxygen and essential oils and more, plus their companionship like with other beings like people and animals, of course would be very healing and comforting. They are the one living thing on this planet that we couldn't live without. As long as they are here, even though we ourselves may be gone, the world as we know it will continue. Without them, all that we know and love and are comforted by is simply gone and an alien world would take over.

I love watering them, cleaning up the tips and pulling out dying leaves. It just feels so good to see them healthy and growing and spider plants grow and change a lot. I need my plants. I also avoid buying plants that are threatened or endangered. My room is white and my lights are natural white ultra bright LEDs so they look unnaturally white compared to an incandescent or most other bulbs. My plants love it and I have found that brightness helps regulate my circadian rhythm... or can totally ruin it if I don't cut them off within a grace period. I also noticed my plants seem to grow faster and not get sick as much when I turn the lights off at night. I think I'm going to test this theory experimentally eventually.

I think a big part of it is that we adapted from tree-dwelling ancestors. We found safety in the trees. They were our shelter for many thousands of years, source of food, etc. If we were in an area with less vegetation, we would be more exposed to predators. So on a phycological level, it's likely we just felt an instinctual safety in greenery, which would reduce stress.
@DirtPoorWargamer3 жыл бұрын
It seems like a pretty cut-and-dry evolutionary response to me. Plants mean water and food are available. Natural environments without plants are harsh and stressful places to be. It makes sense that our stress levels would be higher in artificial environments without plants.

I can definitely relate. I am very fortunate to have lived right next to a park my whole life so I guess I really haven't experienced what it'd be like to live somewhere with no nature, but I can definitely say that being around nature definitely boosts my mood. I love nature, I love seeing wildlife, I love seeing how everything interacts and all the biodiversity, it's just all so fascinating to me. Places with no nature feel so depressing and unnatural to me. I've recently gotten into gardening too, and it's fascinating seeing how plants grow and it's gratifying knowing that you're bringing new life into the world, even if it's just a few plants. I also love seeing how a lot of insects use the plants as food or shelter. One of my favourite things I've seen so far is a tiny little spider that spun his web on a tomato plant I was growing. I was rooting for the little guy, "Go, buddy, go! Catch all them bugs!". Sadly I didn't see him again after a few days :(

Plants mean life, mean fertile soil, means animals who eat them. We spent the majority of out time around nature and it makes evolutionary sense for our ancestors to like being outdoors since that’s where they got their food and mental stimulation from. In short: brain wants to return to monke. Big Ape see green, Big Ape pleased.

Part of the effect of animals may be that people revert their attention to the animal's needs from their own. And taking care of something is rewarding, it gives meaning - together with the connection with the animal. Kind of like people may feel better when helping others with their problems, because their own problems are too "close" and give anxiety. Or something like this. Can't explain my logic atm.

For the bit about plants in an indoor environment and creating feelings of relaxation, it feels like a bit of an assumption to believe it's specifically the plants causing it and not just an individual's perspective on their environment. That is, hospitals have a particular _feel_ and presentation that is, frankly, quite "unnatural". Cold, one might say. Disrupting that sense of the environment seems like it's what is causing the effect. Seems to me just as plausible that humans -- being animals -- may have some built in mechanisms to react to a judgement of their environment. So, despite being conditioned by our own society to be "comfortable" in our rigid indoor environments, it might be that there's an innate stress associated with environments that are less... inviting. Ones that feel more confining or cage-like. Excuse my language here, as I know it's all very, very subjective. I would just be interested, if I were able to conduct a series of studies on the subject, to compare the aesthetics of environments. So, you know, you could compare more "clinical" appearing environments (white/grey walls with sparse details, utilitarian furnishings, cool white lighting) with something like a "cabin" aesthetic (wood-based walls, flagstone floors, warm lighting) and then also a more pastoral aesthetic (indoor "garden" look). This would need more thought put into it, of course, but the general idea is that I think the plant hypothesis is more or less relying on plants breaking up the colder or more stressful aesthetics of an environment. And humans being complex creatures, I doubt it's nearly as simple as plants=relaxation, but rather that seeing plants in a room is _one_ indicator of many for the brain that the space is "safe". Or, _safer_ than it would otherwise seem. And I'd guess this association is because seeing plants triggers a familiarity that is otherwise missing in rather sterile and utilitarian spaces.... but likely other factors or "checks" are required for the brain to fully accept this.

I think the reason we like plants is as simple as the fact that humans are animals. We may have reason, and cognizant thought but we are still just fancy apes. Indoor life for us is stable, and we can rationalize it, but it can lead to the same depressing effect as a unenriching zoo animals pen. Animals deal best when their enclosure is most similar to their habitat, and while oversimplified, the rationale behind that might just be, in terms of emulating a natural environment, a plant, is better than nothing at all.

old hospitals had it right in that every patient room needed opening windows to the outdoors with views of nature. As much a death trap as those hospitals were for other reasons, but modern hospitals are sterile depressing places which is not great for people recovering from illness.
