Before you listen, just take a moment to think about how sight works: Light comes out of the sun, bounces off of a tree (or whatever), goes inside of your head, and hits some nerves which send signals to your brain which turns that into an image of a tree (or whatever)... I wouldn't believe it if I weren't looking at this screen and typing these words right now!

I'm not sure what I liked more: Ceri's poem or Ceri's delivery of the poem while barely able to contain her giddy smile.

I usually just listen to the podcast on my commute but decided to check out the video versions for funsies. I was missing out! They talk with their hands a lot and it's kinda adorable. Also, it's nice to see photos of what they're talking about during the fact off.

Used to be a massive fan of crash course back in the day. Honestly I felt like I learned more from that (and actually retained it), than most of my time at high school...well...I mean I could Def still write 3000 words on the problems and solutions for malaria but that's locked in for life sadly. Happy to find you guys

Re: the spider: I'm with Hank, it's somewhat like that time on Apollo 12 when Alan Bean accidentally pointed the color TV camera at the sun when setting it up, burning out the video tube. The spider is the equivalent of Al Bean having a vacuum tube factory in his pocket, or something like that. It's a really strained metaphor, but you get the idea.

Follow up study ideas for the "plants can see" paper: (1) artificial plant hosts with different colored leaves. (2) artificial plant hosts with leaves of various shades of green. (3) artificial plant hosts with leaves that blend into the background as much as possible. If any of those variables have an effect on the mimicry, it'll tell us *so much* about how they work; if none do, then it would suggest it's not actually sight of any kind at all.

"I just did a tab cull. I have 25 tabs open." is actually mental to me. I know it's a meme, everyone just keeps opening and not closing tabs in Chrome, but really? Chrome notoriously consumes all of your memory for even just being open. I never have more than 4 tabs open.

Wow do I luv Tangents! But (and it's a big but) y'all are making the same error that we all make whilst explaning evolution. Even the most sciencey of scientists have been educated to talk in terms of a design process, a gathering of data to then be used to create a tool for the job. It's a great way to visualise the process. And although this can seem to happen sometimes within a generation due to extreme conditions, I'm talking about the big million year processes that cause big limb changing magic. So this is my understanding, and I may be wrong, but here we go. Whales had legs. When the seas rose, they lost their legs leaving thigh bones under their skin, proving they were walkers once. This process was utterly random, took millions of years, and would have had millions of births of animals that were all really really pissed off at how bad they felt all the time in their watery home. And they could never find swimming trunks that fitted right. A freak was born with no legs, which happens a lot in all species. This beautiful freak was sooo good at swimming that all it's friends wanted to hang out and make babies with them. Whales. This however does not make a very long video or conversation. But I truly believe that if we are to combat alternative education becoming the standard science education, we need to just explain evolution as the random, boring, non magical dice roll it is. Have I told you how much I love SciShow Tangents? Ta tarr!

Haven't watched yet, but a lot of plants are kind of like... all eye, arguably. edit. If I had to guess the way that vine mimics, I would suspect it uses shadows cast on the leaves to detect basic shape. Some other plants already use this kind of information to shift growth for a variety of reasons, but parasitic plants are especially good at it because many use it to find a host. edit. What biology has done to me is people are like "eyes complicated" and my reaction is "not really... pretty simple really."... when everything starts to look simple, you have been in biology and computer science too long. Immune systems are complicated, life forms as ecosystems is complicated, that program people have been editing without enough time for 20 years is complicated.

Thumb wing is a great idea, but I propose, pinkie wings, it starts as a membrane like a bats, but the animal retains the other fingers and the pinkie finger slowly recedes into the elbow and then into the shoulder forming a second set of shoulder blades under the existing ones for wing action. Flying humans ig, idk, just an idea

Could the reason that the plant mimics another plant's leaf be that the original plant developed to have leaves suited to its environment? By mimicking it, it could better adapt to whatever ecosystem it finds itself in by copying the homework of the plant native to the niche.

The best part is that Im not even suprised one bit by the plants can see. Like ya! Why the hell couldnt they? Plants EAT animals dont they? Why cant they see us too? The real question is, does sight ALSO imply higher intelligence (not like our height, but higher than otherwise)? Do vegans have to stop eating plants if they can see AND react to what they see???
