I hope Ceri gets to see this! The linguistic link between the Latin and Germanic words is explained by Grimm’s law. This was a development in the Proto-Germanic language that occurred around the first millennium BC where, among other changes, voiceless stops became voiceless fricatives, e.g. p > f. Grimm’s law shows a strikingly regular correspondence between many words in Germanic and non-Germanic languages. Some examples: p > f Latin, pēs; Greek, πούς (poús) | English, foot; German, Fuß Latin, piscis; Greek, ψάρι (psári) | English, fish; German, Fisch t > þ French, trois; Welsh, tri | English, three; Icelandic, þrír k > h Latin, canis; Greek, κύων (kýōn) | English, hound; Dutch, hond That solves the initial consonants. As for the middle of the words, they come from different inflections of the Proto-Indo-European root word *petH- (“to fly”). Proto-Italic (parent of Latin) developed *petnā (later Latin penna) from the PIE form *petHén- while Proto-Germanic developed *feþrō from the PIE form *pétHr̥ (we can see both the p > f and t > þ shifts here).

Peacock primary feathers are a beautiful cinnamon color. They make great quill pens, too. In LoTR Rings of Power, Elrond is using a peacock quill in his first scene. I haven't found anything online about this, but I have three peacocks, and those primaries are very distinctive. Their train feathers might be what people think of, but they are just beautiful all over, males and females.

19:30 I disagree that there are no differences between dolphins and porpoises. The most notable difference between dolphins and porpoises are the teeth: Dolphins have conical teeth, whereas porpoises have spade-shaped teeth. Both are in the Delphinoidea superfamily, but porpoises are in the family Phocoenidae while dolphins are in the family Delphinidae. Other physical differences are the rostrums: Dolphins may either have short or long rostrums, but porpoises always have short rostrums, so any Delphinoid with a long rostrum is a dolphin. Both dolphins and porpoises may lack dorsal fins, but in the species that do have dorsal fins, porpoises tend to have triangular dorsal fins, while dolphins tend to have curved sickle-shaped dorsal fins.

Feathers are incredible! We have peafowl (I liken them to dinosaur puppies, because if you spend time with them, that's how they act, it's hilarious) and have had ducks and quail. The variety of shapes, types, colors, etc. is wonderful! Bonus: peafowl shed their train feathers yearly, so you can just collect them if you happen to have access to shed feathers.

Ceri's comment about patchy birds reminded me of this. My sister bred parakeets, & had one mother who would pull out her feathers if she didn't have eggs to sit on. So she had a little collar she had to wear when she wasn't actively breeding. Other than that, IIRC she was an excellent mama bird.

Wing feathers aren't just one type, either. There are typically at least...uh, I would say four types of feathers on most bird wings. Ratite feathers are very different, and birds like penguins also have extra specialization, which is only the tip of the iceberg.

To be fair to Hank about the Outkast mistake, "Hey Ya!" was from the album The Love Below, which was one half of their double album (the other being Speakerboxxx). The double album was really just a bundle of each of their solo albums; as such, "Hey Ya!" was written, produced, and performed only by Andre 3000, with Big Boi not being a part of it. So while it's attributed to Outkast, it really is very much an Andre 3000 solo song -- making "he should have told us" valid 😁

putting batteries in the fridge or freezer absolutely does not keep them working longer. I work in tech retail and I'm constantly having to tell older customers not to do that. You need to keep them away from moisture and keep them away from big temperature swings, and fridges and freezers both swing wildly in temperature as you put things in. You also don't want them to burst and contaminate your food. Just keep them in a drawer somewhere

For over 10 years we were able to raise peafowl. Then we had to sell our acreage. The one white peacock was attacked and eaten by something just when he reached the age to have his full tail. The developed the long feathers in May and dropped them in August. I miss the birds.

On the question of "what's hair vs feathers?", according to things I just found from a Google: feathers are just scales that have extended into a long central shaft as their main structure, and emerge from specific tracts along the skin called pterylae; while hair is conical in shape and emerge from the dermis. Feathers and hair are both made of beta keratin, while scales can include both alpha and beta keratin. Hair and feathers evolved independently, but both came from the scales of a single common reptile ancestor who lived about 300 million years ago. Additional fact: reptile scales also have an additional waxy layer between the keratin layers, which helps keep the animal from drying out; while fish scales often have layers of bone between the keratin instead.

I enjoyed hearing Sam call his generation "Zoomers" I hear "Gen Z" more often, & really want Zoomers to win out. (FWIW, I'm GenX - and remember that "GenX" was coined b/c x is a variable, & we supposedly didn't "stand for anything." That we've kept numbering generations like it's a good pattern is just weird.)
