Don't just look at the c rating since battery manufacturers always rate their battery c rating more than what they're actually capable of doing , pro tip check the Size of the wire (not all brand put the awg rating on the wire so be careful Example 14awg will transfer less power than a 12awg since the wire is bigger so less resistance and heat will be contained in the battery so more power to the wheel. (Also I won't go into detail since my comment would take year to write , I ain't 100% sure too.)

Will too low discharge, cause an esc to not run a motor?
@nerdnic6 жыл бұрын
I would think as long as the voltage is correct, the motor should turn. However, if your motor draws too many amps vs what your battery can supply, you'll likely ruin the battery.

Great vid.. Thanks for the info. I'm also wondering about the battery life as well. When I started flying a year ago, I bought the cheapest batteries I could get. Now, they are pretty close to end of life. Would the higher C batteries last longer? If so, it would offset the higher initial cost. As a noob, I also wanted the lowest amount of cash in the air so if I lost the craft I wouldn't be out quite as much money. Still flying the nnP-39 and loving it. Thanks

if i have 4 30amp ESCs, if i only have one 30C 3000mah lipo would that mean only one ESC can be powered fully at once? would it power every ESC at a quarter of the 30c max discharge? does that mean i need 4 lipo batteries to power 4 ESCs? Whenever i use one 30C lipo i can get one motor to run at full power or all of them to run quite weakly, what is the solution to this?
@nerdnic6 жыл бұрын
Hi, you don't need 1 batter for each ESC. If all 4 of them run, but weakly, then you don't have a powerful enough batter. Either upgrade a to higher C battery, or one with more mah.
@seanjhardy6 жыл бұрын
will two 3s 6000mah power all four motors? that should be 120 discharge rate to power 30x4 (120 amp) ESCs?

So if you there is a 29g difference in weight.... Why not make up that weight with extra capacity for the lower C pack and it will give you what you need? Using more capacity with the lower C will help. This is a balancing act that when done properly works really well.

Very nice info.. nicely presented..but if the controller is only say 13 amps will it not burn with the higer C ratings battery?
@nerdnic3 жыл бұрын
Your speed controller must be higher amp rated than your motor/battery output. Using a high c battery should increase the output, so account for that in your speed controller sizing.

@nerdnic3 жыл бұрын
If I'm understanding your setup correctly, then I think you'll be fine with no issue. Going from a 1c discharge to 3c shouldn't increase your total motor wattage output by much. But where it will help is keeping the wattage higher on those hills and stop/go situations where your 1c struggles. Good luck!

Great video, I have the same batteries, but also the Zippy compact 40C, I found the Zippy packs (1000MAH, 3S) 35C and 40C don't last as long in general. You might save 2x on cost, but it only lasts 1/3 the time a 65C 1000MAH in total lifespan. Well done Nic

If I'm putting a 3000mah 3S battery with a 30amp ESC , THEN is there an optimal C rating battery that I should use? 15C? 30C? 40C? Or does it really matter?

Hi Mark. Your ESC can handle any size/C battery. The trick is to make sure your ESC and battery can deliver as much power as your motor needs.

There are a couple things that you are not taking into account. That is an over square prop that is actually cavitating when static. Props unload in the air so that prop may actually pick up some more amps on the air because of it getting more bite. Another thing to notice is that higher C packs also draw more amps. When you draw more amps you are actually using more energy so you actually lose flight time as well. Lower C packs are saving weight and when flown within their limits can actually get better flight times. If you really want to show how to effectively use the energy density of lipos you can find a pack that is the same weight as the Graphene pack but higher capacity which will help with discharge rate as well. Its a balancing act between weight, discaharge capacity and flying style too. Choosing packs based on discharge rate is the way that I do it which gives a good mix of flight time and performance. High C will always have its drawbacks..

Does a high C-rated battery also provide longer run times, and does it have a longer life? (No. of cycles)
@nerdnic5 жыл бұрын
Remko Jerphanion run time, not really. In some situations you will get less run time in minutes because the power is released faster. Longer life, yes. This happens because less voltage sag means less heat. The drop in voltage is from the internal resistance in the battery, and the difference between the sag and the cells charge is how many volts/watts are being used to heat the battery. Heat kills our batteries, so the more you can reduce heat the longer it will last.

Now here is the rest of the story. The C rating is almost NEVER what is on the label which makes comparison shopping nearly impossible. Second, the lower C rated battery will give you more run time compared to similar mAh battery as it is drawing more amps. So yes, you'll get a little more punch with a higher C battery, but it comes as the cost of decreased flight time, increased weight and increased cost. Really worth it? You decide..

This is an interesting data set, however... I think the method needs some work? You're controlling on C rating, which isn't "fair" in this case. The test you're doing is "is c rating useful to know" And.. well. sure? But you're not compensating for battery mass. Since these are going in planes, a more useful comparison would be "for a given mass" So that 35C battery, should be something more like 1350mah, instead of 1000mah. At that point, you could draw a good comparison between "is c rating worth it". .... Actually, I think.. with the data you provided, we can figure that out. ... maybe? At least we can get a vague idea. 3.32v, 14 amps. 0.23 ohms? Interestingly, we get the same .23 ohms with the 17amps and 3.93 battery voltage. I was hoping to see a larger difference in IR. I wonder if a 1350mah pack (assuming same mass as the 65c battery) would get you up to that 17amps of draw. On an airplane, where mass matters less, I'd definitely go for the most mah per pound I could get.
