Thank you Scott for your thoughtful and beautiful arrangement of Jaco's masterpiece. I'm sure Jaco would approve some new little extra pieces and your approach and would be proud. And of course I thank all the musicians who performed beautifully. One of my beloved compositions ever. Feel happy everytime even when I took bass and simply play over the record sound some root notes.

Love the piece... still prefer the original intense melodic sobriety from Jaco.
@epeedooh126 жыл бұрын
Bona is quite simply the perfect embodiment of the musical syncretism that is the port city of Douala, a crossroads of the most varied musical influences: makossa, soukousse, salsa, jazz fusion, R&B, Flamenco With models inspired by local (Manu Dibango, Francis Bebey, Medjo Messon, Jeannot Karl...) and international (Jaco Pasterius, Stanley Clark...)

"musical syncretism"..What?

I love, love, love Jaco,love this song, and don't doubt that Richard Bona is a gifted player, but the thing that ruins it for me with him every time is, all the atonal, hyper-noodling that he does. To have the opportunity to play 'Bright Size Life' with Pat Metheney, or 'Three Views ' with a full orchestra, are amazing(read:AMAZING) opportunities, but it would just mean so much more if he played it straight, & interjected little bits to enhance the tune- Jaco had a great ability to do that, & lay out where it was necessary, but on this one, after about 3:15, it's just a chops explosion, which is a turn off for me....
@YsenleMagnifique10 жыл бұрын
I was exactly going to say the same, richard bona is incredible but here he plays way too much.

Andy Kaiser Hahaha lol atonal, hyper-noodling? Ok...Ok...I think I would do better ..but hey!?! Who am I??? Cheers

@steveniddon61335 жыл бұрын
Bona has nowhere near the soloing sentiment of Jaco. Most of it is just fast showboating that doesn't touch the soul at all, and is frankly inappropriate for the piece. He played the melody and bassline nicely at least.

I agree 100 percent. Well said!

Lovely arrangement, one of the best Jaco compositions! Great musicians, and Richard Bona is really a master... BUT... well... this time he was REALLY TERRIBLE in his improvised solo... a bunch of random fast notes, not a single melody... seems like he's soloing over a completely different tune! No... this piece is pure melody... you must stick with a melody soloing, not a bebop-hero-like solo... sorry.
@avmusicacademy3536 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I did not understand Bona's solo at all.
@martybergel82583 жыл бұрын
@jim hutchison His technique is remarkable and he should be famous but, geez, slow it down and put some tenderness into it. That's what I get from the original composition.
