Scoliosis is a progressive condition that is incurable but highly treatable. Although commonly associated with children, as the age group increases, the greater the population that has scoliosis.
The most prevalent condition is something called adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This is normally diagnosed between 10 and 18 years of age; the word adolescent is only put in front of there because the patient is an adolescent at the time of diagnosis. If left untreated, it becomes adult idiopathic scoliosis.
Approximately 80% of all cases are this idiopathic type of scoliosis, meaning there's no clearly associated cause of scoliosis. We think scoliosis is a multifactorial condition, and there can be many different factors that occur during growth and development that could lead to a curvature developing. The remaining 20% of scoliosis cases are associated with a known cause, and these tend to fall into four main categories. neuromuscular scoliosis, congenital scoliosis, degenerative or de novo scoliosis and traumatic scoliosis.
The most common type of scoliosis in adults is idiopathic. Some of these patients are diagnosed as adolescent cases who become adults and progress into the adult stage. But a lot of cases of adolescent idiopathic cases go undiagnosed.
The second most common type of scoliosis is degenerative scoliosis. In degenerative scoliosis, one area is rapidly generating and is much more degenerated than the rest of the spine, telling you that something is causing this area to degenerate quicker, and normally it has to do with alignment.
The symptoms of scoliosis in adult patients are very different from what we see in adolescent cases, regardless of the size of the curve. The most common symptom of scoliosis in adolescents is posture; they normally don't have any pain or any dysfunction, regardless of the size of the curve. Because what's causing the curve to progress in the adolescent form is growth. And this growth is elongating, and it doesn't lead to any compression of nerves or tissues or muscles, or disks.
In adult patients, the most common symptom of scoliosis is pain. And the reason why is that when the scoliosis progresses in the adult stage, it is compressing over time. This can affect the surrounding muscles and nerves, and they're now vulnerable to this compression or uneven natural forces. This can lead to pain throughout the body. The pain is not related to the size of the curve as you grow but more to how much you progress as an adult. Also, curve progression is not linear; as it continues to progress over time, it tends to accelerate its rate of progression.
There are two options for scoliosis treatment:
Traditional treatment is waiting until the curve is big enough to perform spinal fusion surgery.
Conservative treatment recommends nonsurgical approaches that aim to reduce the curve in a corrective manner; this reduction can directly relate to better function.

Hi Dr. Nalda (sorry if I have misspelled your name ). I have watched several of your videos and I’m very impressed with your methods. I am 91+ years of age, I am taking treatments with a chiropractor,but I’m not completely satisfied that he has the same methods of treatment s that describe. He uses the “punch “ instrument ,he stretches and turns my neck ,etc. I have been going twice a week now I’m to go once a week. I’m doing some exercises which he says are good ,but hasn’t offered any other exercises? I really wish I could attend your clinic but it is not possible I would need to travel by train because I can not sit in a plane I will keep watching your videos. To learn more about your clinic. Thank you doctor for this video , i have a lumbar scoliosis 17° and a dorsal kyphosis , with a pain in my upper back which is mostly due to the kyphosis and not the scoliosis (i don't have a lumbar pain) What exercises should i do, and is there exercises for treating kyphosis cause the exercises i found on KZbin are all for scoliosis , how to reduce the pain without using Analgesic drugs ....

I have made several comments to your videos and I really appreciate your help. I have been going to a treatment clinic which I hoped would treat my condition in a more positive manner. That has not happened ,he has not changed his treatment since the first day. I would like to have some information as to the cost of your treatment. I am 70 with Scoliosis the pain I get is because my muscles tighten up. I do stoop and in October I am having a total shoulder replacement as I’m bone on bone. A specialist I saw in the UK when I was in my 50’s told me to have deep massage to relieve the tightness, which is obvious temporary but it does help. Since I moved to France I can not find a physio who will do this, they are either protecting their hands or they tell me it will not do any good. May I have your opinion.

Very informative video! I am 55 and have scoliosis of about 20 degrees. I have ongoing pain in my groin mainly, but also lower back which comes and goes depending on what activities I've been doing. I have been going to a chiropractor since January and he said it could take up to a year before my symptoms disappear. Is this correct?

Already I am down to once a week and have not been given any specific exercises other than the ones I tell him I’m doing. Hi I was diagnosed with scoliosis 2 weeks ago and now I'm waiting to see a specialist in Newcastle in the uk I'm 47 and the doctor said I have a severe bend to the left between my ribs that's been causing breathing problems and chest pains since March I also have lower back pains and static pain in my butt cheek is this normal to never know you had this until this age and what would likely to be done as it feels like in having a heart attack every day all day ..

My scoliosis is because before my birth I was breech and one leg came out and they pushed my leg back in and broke it. Several hours later after a cesarean procedure they found the break and I was in the hospital for six weeks. It was not a green stick break but a complete break. I wore braces for about three to four years but my legs are different lengths. I have flat back syndrome, I’m assuming from the scoliosis. Can anything be done now at age 68? They want to operate, spinal fusion, but how is that going to help? My legs will still be different lengths so will that help? I’m now on pain medication and would love to get off of those.

Is it possible to correct to any degree of an adult scoliosis I apparently have three curves in my spine and a50 degree curve. I’m having some treatments done which I don’t think are going to result in what I should be able to have. I’m 91+ years of age, in good health. 9am watched video - I'm just shy of 67 years old and have degenerative scoliosis due to traumatic injury in my 30's - do scoliosis exercises but don't seem to see a difference - wanted corrective sleeping brace but only prescribed for adolescents - I get that however if it helps correct shouldn't adults be able to get it as well as it may help - I am a subscriber idk why it says I'm not

Can thoracic scoliosis cause pain in the ribs? I've been having chronic pain throughout my right side of my ribs. It's tender to the touch sometimes and sharp at the tip/front. It wraps around. I have juvenile thoracic scoliosis.

44 years old no pain and just found out I got it . Had it checked in school a bunch . Got in a car wreck one X-ray they said I was fine at hospital. Backs been hurting from wreck never had pain before . Go to chiropractor a week later get another x ray and my spine is crooked . He goes I had it since I was probably in middle school . Figures . Doctors are stupid .
