I work on them. One thing not mentioned on this vid is the reason you have to adjust the valves is the valve in question is wearing the head out which makes the valve adjustment tighten up. If you are adjusting the valves often you might as well get ready to replace the head. And a valve adjustment will not always fix the problem if the head is bad.

Make sure you adjust them at the right top dead center (TDC). The piston is at TDC two times per combustion stroke. There's a mark for TDC on the flywheel, that you can see if you take the plastic cover from the fan. Turn the flywheel until the T mark is aligned with the pointy bit on the crank case. Then check if the 2 holes in the timing sprocket allign with the edge of the cilinder head. The smaller third hole should pointing forward. Then you have the right TDC. I did this wrong once, so you don't have too. 😂👍
@Scooter_9114 жыл бұрын
Exactly! That is why I like to wait for the intake valve to close. Right after it has closed you know you are on the compression stroke!
@jeroen76994 жыл бұрын
@@Scooter_911 you are also right. It's just a double check with the markings. I am just about to set the valve clearance on a friends scooter. The scooter hardly starts when it's warm, and it doesn't accelerate anymore, well it does for a second, then almost stalls, then goes again... I was suspecting ignition trouble, but first thing I am going to check is the valve clearance. Second thing is the vacuum membrane in the carburetor, might have a crack or puncture in it.

Ms. Thandi, I performed my first valve lash adjustment on my motorcycle 50 years ago, it is *not* hard to do. Get yourself a cheap tool kit from Harbor Freight, (Google them), when they go on sale, (which is a lot). Make sure that all the tools you need are included in the kit. Buy a set of feeler gauges there as well, you'll pay very little money for all the tools that are more than adequate for this job. Next, take your phone out to your scooter and pause this video step-by-step. After you perform this job just one time, you'll have payed for you tools, and have a real sense of accomplishment! PS, he didn't mention it in the video, but you should not make the adjustments when the engine is hot, (shortly after a ride), nor cold, (below about 50F degrees), because the clearances will change once the engine gets hot again. I would love a reply if you do it!

This was very easy and saved my moped. I thought it was low compression because it would barely start with the electric start when cold and i'd have to kick it and wait for it to die and restart a few times and let it warm up for 15 mins before I can get it to ride without dying. Now the moped fires right up when cold and works perfectly. Thanks!

@@Scooter_911 I own a Havana Classic 125. It's fairly new. I've done research on it. Seems like I have to change oil and filter often.

@@Silver-cl2bd absolutely! The engine design is much different than a car and requires much more frequent service intervals. Luckily it's pretty cheap if you do it yourself

And btw, I've been looking at many a video, and yours is by far the most professional. The music is great, I love how you speak slowly and clearly as if you really want people to grasp what you're saying. Also the diagram you drew was huge! I'm not a mechanic, but I had a power mechanics class in school and my dad built an amazing model of a car aee-through engine that even included a whole chassis and working brake system. I say that to say that i know how engines basically work with the whole valves, pistons, rocker arms, camshaft, etc thing, so it was interested to say how that work on a small scooter engine!! Thanks brah!!

I bought my sym with 2500 miles on it, changed the oil every 750 miles, sparkplug 3 times, it's now on 24,000 miles and I've never checked the valve clearance, it has good compression on the kick-start, doesn't rattle, idles smoothly so I just use it. I've had a few sym scooters that use the gy6 engine and after checking the others first time when I bought them the clearance hadn't changed in the next 4000 miles , I do however check the belt every 4000 miles and replace at 15000 as having one break while riding can really spoil your day.

Hey bro, love the vids! Please keep it up! I just did this on my GTS 250 after installing some fun new malossi engine upgrades and driving for a few hundred miles more than I should have. Made a massive difference in smoothness and power delivery. I was surprised at how much of a difference it made. Recently, I've been getting into video production. I'm curious to know, what kind of camera are you using?
@Scooter_9115 жыл бұрын
Awesome man! That's a killer kit! To answer your video question, this video was shot entirely with a cannon vixia vf500 that bought off Craigslist for $60. In some of my other videos I use a Garmin virb for under-hood and action shots. I then edit everything in iMovie. I use the Imovie voice-over function and a Korg microkorg synth to put in my bloops and bleeps sound effects and I created all of my theme music in GarageBand. Hope that answers your question and then some!
