My local honda motorcycle dealer didn't sell the size of City Grip for the front tire, and refused to install them at any price if I bought them elsewhere and Cycle gear told me they only mount tires larger than 14" and I just wanted to say this video helped me alot. I would have much rather just paid someone because It took me 2 days of being so mad at my tires lol, but now I feel I could probably change one in less than an hour now that I get where I went wrong in the process, but this was an excellent starting point. A great deal of that time was spent trying to get the bead to seat without an proper air compressor, the little tankless 12v one with my car couldn't overcome the leaking before the bead seated, and the bike pump was just impossible for me too. I even tried to ratchet strap to get it to seat. Eventually I took a 4500 psi cylinder and a regulator and some paintball equipment and with that much flow it seated in just a few seconds. Also I found that using a heat gun to make the whole tire warm to the touch made it so much easier to take off, and the cheap Amazon rimguards caused me lots of scratches, I bought the motion pro ones and I have to say they are worth every penny. So now I have two new City Grip 2s, and my PCX can get back into the rain of the PNW without slipping and sliding

Excellent video! Just used it as a tutorial to demount and remount a scooter tire to replace a leaking valve stem. One comment... I seem to recall a video in which Garrett said he was 6'3 and 200 plus pounds... So it's no wonder he can arm wrestle those tires while they sit on a table at elbow height. For the rest of us who aren't so Texas-sized, what I found worked better was putting the tire/wheel on the ground and using my foot to hold the tire in the proper position on the wheel while mounting it back on with the tire spoons. Otherwise everything else was spot on! Thanks again Garret and happy scootering from New Braunfels!

2 important tips to make life easier. - Always use 3 tyre irons. Much easier to "walk" them. One after the other. - In the absence of a "tyre machine". One can fix the tyre with a large bolt+large washers and respective nuts. To fix the tyre onto a regular bench vice. Not having to hold the tyre at the same time, as doing other operation, render it incredibly easy. That way there's no need for all that gymnastics of holding the tyre while pulling and pushing. ;-)

When I purchased by used scooter that was sitting in a warehouse for a couple years. It barely had any miles on it and the price was very competitive. Buying used, you never know what you'll get yourself into but the only thing I found wrong with it (so far!) was the rear tire had lost air. Couldn't tell if it was lost while sitting or had a small leak. After filling it with air and riding it very short distances. I let it sit and the following day, the tire had deflated. At the time I was very excited about getting on it and riding it so I took the easy route and used the fix a flat sealant. It works great but I know that I can't drive safely with the sealant. I have purchased a new tire and plan on using the same rim. After talking to some mechanic friends they told me "have fun getting that tire off with the fix a flat sealant! It's going to be a pain in the you know what!" Thinking about it more they're absolutely right! At the time I wanted to ride! Probably should've done my homework before adding the sealant. I have not tried to do anything with it yet because I'm not sure if it's something I can do myself or try to find a local tire shop that would be willing to work on a scooter. Not that many scooter shops in my area. Any recommendations on how to remove a tire that has fix a flat sealant? Should I buy a tire with the rim on it? Or possibly find a local mechanic that will be able to take care of it with out charging too much since there's extra "labor" involved. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Stay safe! Drive Safe! And most importantly Have Fun!

Dear Garret Greetings from London, UK! Thank you for such a comprehensive explanation of the tyre-change process for a tubeless tyre. I've changed tubed tyres before but when I researched a tubeless process I was put off because the video I watched showed the guy cutting off the bead with an angle grinder! Your explanation of using the 'bead drop' in conjunction with the bead circumference is illuminating - and is what one might do with a tubed tyre through natural discovery. But your explanation of what is happening makes the process understandable! In addition your technique uses force as a last resort rather than a first! You have combined your obvious great experience with your very effective communication skills! Well done! I also like the use of clamp and wood as an effective way of 'popping' the bead off the rim. I feel well equipped now to change my next tyre - even though it's a 10inch - and stop being fleeced by our motorcycle shops - (when they deign to change one, usually a couple of days!). So many thanks for your video. Regards Charlie H

Hey bud. Just did a valve job on my scooter. That was a tricky one. Everything is so damn sensitive. And you're not at exactly tap dead center its gonna be totally off. Any way just finished that she was riding great. Now I notice she has a terrible time in the morning cold starting her. Its not cold out by any means I live in Miami, but its taking several cranks and a lot of times I have to adjust the tension screw connected to the throttle cable. Thats the idle adjuster right? Is there a rule of thumb for that screw that I don't know about. Clockwise, counter clockwise? I just give it a few quarter turns in either direction till she cranks. But then the next morning, with that screw in the same position from the day before, she won't crank up. I already checked the fuel line and filter for debris, I put in a new spark plug and tested the plug wire. Those are fine. I ran a bottle of k100 thru her and changed her oil. So.... what am I missing?
@Scooter_9114 жыл бұрын
@@roryoconnor7239 well if the only thing you changed was the valve adjustment and now its running poorly I would re-check the adjustment. other than that i would suspect you might have an issue with the autochoke, but dont go jumping to conclusions. make sure you test everything before you start changing variables. make sure that you didnt bump any vacuum lines loose or leave anything unplugged. Also the idle adjustment screw really shouldnt help it start any more than applying some throttle by hand. let me know what you find

I had installed the micro- dynabeads through the valve stem into the tire. I could NOT reseat the bead on the tire with the beads installed. only after I removed the tire again and vacuumed them all out did it want to seat. It was hard to re-seat the used tire. what I did the time it worked was to take a soapy rag and polish/clean the inside of the tire to get any dried junk off the rim and then on the 12th time using 100psi big air, did the tire seat. the PCX 90/90 tire was the hardest time ive ever had reseating a tire - but it did work eventually. the trick of using a clamp around the outside didnt work because it pushes the bead into the dip of the rim. the trick, like he said was putting plenty of soapy water (1:1) on rim and the whole bead to allow it to slip back on.

Great explanation, although it's still harder than you make it look! Good tip about cutting the guard in half. I would observe that this process is materially more difficult with smaller tires, which don't have much flexibility to wrangle around the rim. Given that I was never going to use the old tire again, I've found it easier to use an oscillating saw to cut the old tire off the rim, which only takes about 30 seconds. Also, I've put internal Bluetooth TPMS sensors into the bead drop underneath the valves. They work great, but they make it more difficult to get the tire on, and I was happy to pay a shop to do it for me.
@Scooter_9115 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I've been changing tires professionally for around 10 years now and I still struggle putting the 10" racing slicks on my race scooter. Like you said sometimes its just better to have someone with a full tire machine do it (or do it at the shop instead of in the bed of my truck on race day...)

Man, that’s a great idea about Bluetooth TPMS sensors. The number of times I’ve fried my hands on the exhaust checking the rear tire...
@tenders5 жыл бұрын
Paul H Just don’t use the kind that screws onto the end of the valve like a lollipop. The added mass stresses the valve stem and makes it wobble, which on mine caused a leak and battered the sensor against the exhaust, breaking it after a few miles. Only use the sensor type that installs inside the tire.

It’s a good idea to attach the rim to a bench or attach it to the plank and use your own weight (plank and two chairs is a nice way) to keep it in place when using tire spoons. First bead over the rim lip, as you showed. Second bead, with a strap and your own weight to pull it off once you’ve got it over rim lip by spoons. Plank upright on the floor and use your leg for pull downwards. My best time is on minute and ten second, for take scooter tire off and put in place, with plank.

Oh bummer, I've had to deal with that a few times. If you're very patient and a little clever you can stick a long thin screwdriver under the seat and poke at the lever that the cable pulls. If you hit it just right the seat will unlatch and you can disable the latch. Good luck!

First of all, it's not really as easy as it looks. You will probably need to use the C clamp in several places on both sides. That bead will be REALLY stuck on there. DO NOT use dish detergent as a lubricant. It will cause corrosion on alloy wheels and rust aluminum wheels. Use actual tire mounting lubricant. I have also used furniture polish like Pledge, or a generic equivalent. That stuff is super slippery, but won't damage the wheel like dish detergent. When using a C clamp to break the bead, make sure that the C clamp on the side without the board does not damage the wheel. Notice just how close it is to the rim at 5:40. The threads on a C clamp can really chew up a wheel. Also, do not use a steel tire lever to pry against the inside edge of the rim. The inside edge of the rim is what the tire seals against, and it is extremely easy to gouge, creating a leak between the tire and wheel. I have a C clamp that I have removed the swivel end from. If you are removing an old tire to replace it with a new one, it doesn't matter what happens to the old tire. And it tends to be a lot more difficult to remove the old tire than to install a new one. I drill a 1/2" hole in the tire about halfway between the edge of the rim and the outer edge of the tire. I then place a metal washer over the end of the threaded part of the C clamp, where I removed the swivel. The washer prevents the threaded part from pushing through the tire, but allows it to push through the hole drilled in the tire enough to keep it from sliding up against the rim and damaging it. Take your time here. The wheel is VERY expensive, the old tire is worthless. Once I get the bead broken on both sides, I don't even try to lever the old tire off the wheel. I drill another hole in the sidewall on the other side, then use a box cutter to cut through the sidewall on both sides. Then you can remove most of the tire, leaving only the beads and a small part of the sidewalls. With a little lubricant, they will slip right over the rim without using any tools. When installing a new tire, if you touch the wheel with a tire lever at any point, you WILL scratch the wheel. There is just no way around it with an alloy wheel or a painted wheel. That part about it's working its way off in a circle just after 12:20 WILL happen, over and over again. It will almost never go on the first time. It is physically impossible to hold the tire bead in place with your hand while trying to lever the rest of it over the rim. The lubricant will make it too slippery. And the wheel will want to slide all over the place. Instead of trying to hold one side of the tire bead down in the center of the wheel by hand, I use a piece of rubber heater hose made for a car and force it between the rim flange and the tire bead to hold the bead down. The last little bit of the bead will be by far the hardest to get over the rim. You cannot stretch the bead. There is a steel ring inside the bead. Steel does not stretch. As was mentioned earlier, the key to getting the bead over the rim is having the opposite side down in the center of the wheel. It will eventually go on, but you are going to make a LOT of scratches on the wheel. There is just no way around that while using steel tire levers in direct contact with a painted alloy wheel. When seating the bead, a bicycle pump may or may not work. They are made for tube type tires. Once the bead is seated they work fine, it just takes a while. But sometimes to seat the bead you need a sudden large blast of air that you can't get from a bicycle pump. Sometimes wrapping a ratchet strap all the way around the tread of the tire and tightening it down will spread the bead outward against the edge of the wheel, making it easier to seat without needing a high pressure/high volume blast of air. The small the diameter of the tire, the harder the job will be. The 12" tires on my Vespa are a nightmare to replace. My wheels are all scratched up. I actually bought a new set of wheels for it because at some point the original wheels are going to become too damaged for the tire to seal against the wheel. Scooter tires, especially the rear one, only last 5,000-6,000 miles, so it will take a LOT of tire changes to reach 50,000 miles. And every tire change will do more damage to the wheel. You can avoid that by having a dealer replace the tires, they have a machine that does it without touching the wheel. But they charge more for doing it than it cost for new wheels (at least for a Vespa, they are $75 apiece, some Japanese wheels may be several hundred $$$ apiece) and you have to leave them there and then go back and pick them up. I can guarantee that black painted wheel is now all scratched up. There is simply no way around that unless you do it the way they do it in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6mZlH-frpeVq9E using a tire mounting machine.

Love your videos 😎👍 and I'm learning a lot from these vids too, you're a good teacher 💪 nice and calm, and you don't have that facking loud music, as many of the other scooter video's has (yeah, yeah, I know, I'm a 52yo grumpy old fart 👴) they're giving me a heart attack 🤪 thanks for your work, it's much appreciated 😁👍

I plan to buy a scooter next year and I hope it will make me into a mechanic. I learned from my terrible e-fatbike experience this year that the hell with mechanics-do everything, if possible yourself! Rain killed mt e-bike after 8 mos.

Good luck my friend! I suggest starting with a quality scooter from a major brand like Honda, Yamaha, genuine, kymco or piaggio. The parts cost a little more but the Chinese imports from wolf, bintelli, tao tao and vitacci are extremely unreliable
@johndefalque5061 Жыл бұрын
We all know the Tao sucks but I'm surprised to see Wolf, Bintelli and Vitacci on that list. I may go with Honda minimotos, Piaggio, a 2nd hand Vespa, I may go Venom Roma. Best bike I ever had was a Yamaha. I was less impressed with Aldy-loud 90 db and 2 stroke.@@Scooter_911

Excellent video that taught me all the things I didn't know and tools I would need. But - hey - no rim-guards when putting the new tyre on...?
@Scooter_9114 жыл бұрын
Excellent observation! When installing the tire back on the rim the spoons actually only touch the inner portion of the wheel so its not as imperative to use the protection

That was a great video. Very educational and informative. I didn't hear you mentioning anything about balancing a scooter tire. Is that something you think is needed? or because a scooter tire is smaller that it's not too big of a deal?

I will still have my local repair shop do this work. $56 for all those tools... cost of having the repair shop change out the tire $49.99. No brainer here. LOL

High quality content in your vidos. Awesome!! Just wonder, is there never a need to balance a scooter tire?
@Scooter_9114 жыл бұрын
Usually not. Scooter's usually do not achieve speeds high enough to throw the super light mass of their wheels and tires out of balance. You'll notice from the factory the only scooters that come with balanced wheels/tires are Suzuki burgman 650 and larger displacement piaggios.
