Florida's Seven Mile Bridge is an epic overseas highway connecting Knight's Key in Marathon to the Little Duck Key in the lower Florida Keys. I ride my scooter over the original Seven Mile bridge which has been converted to pedestrian and bicycle use. The original bridge used to carry the Florida East Coast Railroad and was the only way to access the Florida Keys. This section of the bridge is 2 miles long, and connects to Pigeon Key where there is a museum, beautiful dock, and historic buildings.

I love that you said this was a 'treat' for us because I totally see it as a special 'episode' and so much wanted to watch this!!!! You've made me want to visit the Keys, do the bridge one way or another...heck I even want to get back into running, move to the Keys and do this on a daily basis to stay in shape. Thank you so much for inspiring me, and it seems like so many other viewers. Florida makes me want to vacation! ...and have a normal job again to do such things. Life back on track after some tumultuous roads.

As a 4th generation Floridian from Miami, I really enjoyed this video. My family drove it in the 50s and 60s and it was like floating over the water. At one time Pigeon Key was leased by University of Miami utilized as a research facility. The buildings were quite run down until recently before the 7-mile bridge and Pigeon Key were restored. It wasn't such a simple matter to do this video. Thanks much.

The old railroad bridge was completed in 1912 and destroyed in 1935 when a hurricane took off a large part of the middle section. More than 400 workers and railmen were killed in the storm. No one wanted to pay the tremendous cost of repair so the land was sold to the State which then began building the highway over the salvaged portions of the structures. The present highway was built in 1980s and it runs along some of the ruins of the old bridge.

According to a recent article it was a railroad bridge until 1935. From 1938 it was used for automobiles until 1982 when the new Seven Mile bridge was completed. In the late 70's we drove to Key West. It must have been on the very narrow old bridge.

Yes I I remember as a child my Dad drove the family to Key West probably around 1958-59 and I distinctly remember driving over the old bridge and remember seeing a side ramp down to Pigeon Key. I also drove back around 1981 and the old bridge was still being used. But I haven't been back since then.

Well where should I start ....Thank you so much for this post and tour.... I actually lived?.... stayed?.... visited? (all three) on Pigeon Key for a couple of weeks in summer 1982 or 83 (which would peg me at 18 or 19 then). Seems odd I can't really remember that clearly now .I do know it was essentially closed to the public and a fantastic place to be introduced to south Florida marine and mangrove life. I had come from Toronto with Blythe and company a sort of education camp for older students with wonderful intense programs, to study Marine Biology. After our stay on the Key we headed for Casa Bertmar on Grand Cayman for a month or so. I had been to Florida a few times as my grand parents lived up the coast in Delray. I flew up to visit for an afternoon on a little airline known as Pacific Boston Airways. Leaving Marathon the Captain asked me if I wanted to sit in the Co pilot's seat and insisted I wear their official "Cap", we didn't get elevated much past 100 ft before I realized there should have been another qualified pilot and I was made to look like one before take-off. We made it to Miami with out a hitch though the aircraft had only about 8 or 10 passenger seats and was a twin turbo prop hauled by these partied coked out specialists in there field. The airline was later shut down by the FAA for infractions that included stoned and drunk pilots cocaine use and flying aircraft without proper staffing. ironic I know. Safely on Miami soil next destination on to West Palm Beach "International Airport". The leg from Miami to WPBI was on a 80 passenger Jet that shook, rattled, passengers were praying and looking at each as this was surely our last flight ever after no doubt dropping loose aluminum and aircraft parts on unsuspecting Floridians on an 70 mile18 Minute flight. A quick visit with Nana. Then a taxi ride to grab 2 items Florida was well known for in the 80's, my journey then increased in pace and space I have no recollection of returned departures but I know I made them, I re-arrived at Pigeon Key the same day although evening had set in. I grabbed beer for everyone with out challenge ,Marlboro's and re-taxied back to Saul, John and Lisa, where we sat at the precipice of your perfect shot of the bridge end, and familiar entrance to PK. We drank, smoked, and the lads played guitar into an absolutely stunning south Florida Night. Our Instructor and guide was Was this rock solid very cool dude named DR. Alan Emory I will borrow a clip from wiki I hope I do not infringe on copywrite but if I do I will gladly modify my comment.(Alan Emery received his Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto[6] and his Master of Science at McGill University in Montreal in 1964 with a study of ocean currents and their role in distributing larval marine organisms in the Caribbean.[7] He received his Ph.D. in 1968 from the School of Marine Sciences at the University of Miami in Florida.[1] His doctoral research included studies of the ecology and evolution of coral reefs with special emphasis on damselfish.[8])this marine madman arrived also out of Toronto, Speedo, chipped tooth and well worn weight belt. He Introduced us to method, measurement and early sea life from Mangrove swamps to Horseshoe crabs. some early class room work. We would leave every morning from the dock you shot, and measure study and dive onto south Florida reefs. I was a keen and some what no doubt hyper focused student who caught the eye of the good doctor always with an admiring and sympathetic ear and eye. Such a good choice an gifted kind and overflowing with fascinating stories, lectures and work for us. Our group was made mainly of Canadian youth although there were a few kids from the U.S east coast specifically New York City maybe the Boston area too. I had been certified in open water at Fenlon Falls Ontario that spring in rushing water that you could see maybe visibility of 10-15 ft. This was June and July of summer in the keys and the water water temperature in some spots was over 90 degrees calm, with much better vis. He was wonderful one day we had come back from a dive and gone pole spear fishing for spiny lobster near the old pilings of the rail road bridge we saw our first big sharks (in our eye's 12-15 obvious man eaters reality just 5-7ft grey nurse, lemon or reef sharks. We quickly exited the water for refuge on the pilings and yelled to the kids on shore to get the doctor and fast..... he came and we explained our situation with panicked breaths and shock....surely they would attack and eat us before reaching shore? Nope he said just swim back to the key and chill out....we reluctantly reentered the water and beelined for shore...of course safely I think some how we endured ourselves to him by being so keen, and sort of refreshing for him not being on a heavy research mission but an introduction for keen new divers and enthusiasts. He was so great. We worked towards grade 12 marine biology credits for our OSR's back in Ontario etc. There were other adventures awaiting us too. With my supplies I was able to make quick friends with the current curator's son, he was about our age possibly a year or two older and a great after hours guide too. It turned out that some work gang crew were doing concrete repairs to the seven mile bridge of Hi way 1. There was a rig attached to the main hi way piling, floating 500 meters off shore with stairs up to the deck of the roadway. I was surprised to find he had never made his way up and jumped from the beckoning concrete walls protecting the drivers from a 55mph dip. So I did, we did, he did, me first, so dumb, I think we only went once …..big surprise....but lived to dive another day. We dined in the mess hall, slept to the ocean breeze and surf in small dorms that had been set up for us in the other buildings Then headed out for the remainder of our trip. Grand Cayman was unbelievable, so clear, so deep, diverse buy, another tale for another page perhaps. Thank you, again so much for your deep dive around Pigeon Key I have said too much, incriminated myself and others, and appreciate that you did this i also apologize for the length of my comment. …..cheers to you Actionkid, you made my day buddy!!

Great job. I wanna take my son and our scooters. To the best of your knowledge, still no restrictions against e-scooters on the old section of 7 mile bridge for the trip to pigeon key? THANKS.

I enjoyed the brief visit to Pigeon Key, but it does leave me with questions. You did the ride along the old bridge, and said it was possible to use a scooter on the new bridge, but does the new bridge actually have access on to Pigeon Key? Is the whole Key a "museum" or are there residents? I tend to gather the entrance fee goes to a charitable organisation. Is this purely for the Key, or does some go towards the future restoration of the bridge. From your recent videos I get the feeling you are enjoying your move to Florida. Paul Quilter (U.K.)

I love how the sky meets the ground in the middle of the screen [the visible horizon] proving that even with a wide angle lens the Earth is level and stationery. The horizon always rises to the observer's eye level on a level surface. No curving whatsoever. Welcome to Flat Earth Action Kid.
