Counter steering is only applicable to true motorcycles, right?
Um, yeah right.
Master counter steering on a 49cc scooter and you will avoid everything that the roads will throw at you!

The name "countersteering", though accurate, confuses some people and causes them to hesitate. "do I steer in the opposite way to what I instinctively do?" When almost everyone instinctively countersteers. I think the best way to think about is: "push left to go left. Push right to go right"

Good topic. The smaller wheels of the scooter create less of a gyroscopic force than the larger wheels of a motorcycle would. This means there's less resistance to steering, allowing a scooter to be more response and controllable on the turns compared to most MCs. A Sports or even a Maxi-scooter will leave the bigger bigs behind on the twisties like the Dragon's Tail. I learned to ride and the use of counter-steering on a 50cc scooter. When I took the BRC I passed top of my class on a 250cc motorcycle mainly because of the experiences and confidence I got from riding a scooter and.

I find counter steering on scooter to be very dangerous. Mostly, going over 60kmph on scooter is dangerous. The small wheels are too risky. I still think scooter guys might be better in few maneuvers, but for the most part, I love my motorcycle, and shall stick to it.

I love counter steering, it's the only way I manoeuvre. I learnt how to do it on my scooter back in the day and like you say with them being so light and with small wheels, they certainly shift from side to side. Counter steering is a big part of the motorcycle test in the uk, you've got to be able to do it to pass your mod1 whilst riding at no less than 32mph through the speed trap. All good fun, lol Tcrs fella ✊

That is smart! We don't include this in the motorcycle test here in my state anyway. We really should. Thanks for stopping by brother!

Counter steering is one of our best tools in the toolbox for bikes and scooters. I love to increase my counter steering in braking corners, increase the braking and increase counter steering at the same time reduces the tendency of the bike to "stand up" in a braking corner. Peace out.

Great suggestion! I'm always too scared to touch the brakes in a turn but what you say makes sense.

you really do have to practice countersteering and consciously think about it because it's easy to steer the wrong way in a panic situation unless countersteering is ingrained in the brain

Just look where you want to go and you'll go there. Body takes over naturally where to push to go. Good topic

Well, I agree. But...I think when you actively practice countersteering, you can actually react quicker with more maneuverability. But that's just me...

counter steering also works on bicycles at high speeds. I used to road race and used it all the time. Ride safe bro.

If you ever get the chance, test ride a Vespa GTS300, you'll be amazed how well they handle bumps and how quick off the line they are, I almost bought the 125 version, but the salesman said I would prefer the power of the 300 especially as I was used to motorbikes. You could do a test ride video upload for your channel if you do, be good to see your opinion on them! Cheers, Paul.

nice nice nice...... now here is the kicker, I don't push....... I pull. The arm is designed and operates better in a pulling motion. I practiced counter steering long ago when I started riding and just developed my own style using a pull method, same principle, if I want to go right instead of pushing right I pull left..... and pulling at slower speeds makes the bike move faster in that direction, on the hwy the centrifugal force on the wheel makes it want to stay straight so pulling equals more pressure on the bars and wheel meaning a faster response time to the action................... DISCLAIMER!!!! this works for me because I have practiced it for a loooooong time, and still do to this day, I wouldn't recommend someone trying this method in an emergency unless it is a natural reaction like it is for me......... pulling on the bars really does make it move fast and may be too fast of a reaction for the untrained and un-practiced :-)
@SoopaBee
@SoopaBee 8 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU for sharing this! I've often wondered about pulling because as you say, it is the same principle. I don't know anyone who has honed this method so I really appreciate you sharing. I do think that it would be super responsive on a little bike like a scooter so thanks for putting up the disclaimer too.
@andypandy.
@andypandy. 8 жыл бұрын
yeah, just give it a go when the streets are quiet and you have a bit of room....... just go little to start with. you will see the response is greater :-)

Ah, use of the phrase 'Back in the Day', I'm afraid you're now officially an old man. I've noticed that the feel of bumps is very dependent on wheel size. You're right, potholes hurt a lot on scooters with the 14" rims. It's even a noticable difference between the 21" rims on my bike vs the 19" on my sister's. I think the reason is that when a smaller wheel overcomes a 'bump' it does so in a shorter timespan, climbing the same thing requires more wheel rotation with a larger tire, so the impact is less jarring.
@SoopaBee
@SoopaBee 8 жыл бұрын
You are right on two fronts! The wheel size really does translate into how well a bike handles the "bumps." And unfortunately, yes, I'm an old man...you know this kid. ;-)
@SoopaBee
@SoopaBee 8 жыл бұрын
And these Metros (and I think most Vespas) have 10" rims kid. The bumps are even MORE pronounced!

How do you turn on a scooter before you have enough speed to counter steer, like at a roundabout after stopping?
@SoopaBee
@SoopaBee 7 жыл бұрын
Personally, I find that you have to be going VERY slow (under 10 mph maybe?) for counter steering to NOT work (i.e., turn right/go right; turn left; go left). Especially with these small wheels. It might even be less than 10 mph. If I were entering a roundabout from a complete stop. I would probably turn right/go right or turn left/go left for merely a couple of seconds. Then counter steering would take over.

@SoopaBee

Well, kinda, but not really. You just have to press on the bars and the bike will move in that direction VERY easily. It works on all bikes...it is just extra pronounced on a scooter.

I have forward running boards on a yamaha . I tend to push my foot into the board and get a more precise turn. Leaving my hands to concentrate on slight adjustments and throttle. Good video. Not many realise the difference small diameter wheels make to a rider.
