Scope parallax and focus Explained

Rifle scope parallax and focus explained for beginners. Scope parallax is actually a weird thing that happens inside of a rifle scope when you magnify a target and try to get the target and reticle on the same focal plane . That's as good an explanation as any, same as trying to tell the time looking at a clock from an angle. Looking right to left it'll appear fast - Left to right will appear behind the time.

The tip on target being in focus but parallax still being off was very helpful. I’ve got a decent new scope that was probably meant more for longer ranges but I put it on my 22 lr target rifle and was struggling to get focus and parallax-free at 25 and 50 yds.

I can say that at 500y we have tested parallax error by setting parallax to as focused as possible while still introducing as much error as we could get by positioning our heads in different position while the parallax was somewhat focused but definitely not correctly adjusted. We could get over 2 minutes of error with poor eye alignment (was with a NF F1 and a older USO SR-8s).. the SR-8s was and is the better scope in that test and still to this day one of my absolute favs. We could get parallax error that was well .75 minute with a decent cheek weld and eye alignment... parallax is super important.

I have a side focus scope but I want to sell it now. I had a missed opportunity on a nice buck because of that scope. When I saw the buck I didn’t have enough time to adjust the focus and he walked behind a tree and brush never to be seen by me again. I think it was the same buck that my son shot two weeks later so I was at happy about that. The buck was at + or - 145yds. That was the first and last time I will use that scope for hunting. It’s a nice Leupold VX-3i scope with CDS dial. I learned a valuable lesson. Great video & info.

Thanks guys went and shot my mk12 build suppresses yesterday which was the first rifle I ever owned with a scope and was confused on why I couldn’t adjust the eyepiece to make the 10x look as clear as the 2.5 now I know I needed to use the paralax lol. Scope is a Vortex Viper pst 2.5-10x32 gen 1

simple explanation on parallax most people can relate to (for those with analogue speedo gauges etc) sitting directly in front of the needle it shows the correct speed. Now move your head overly exaggerated to the side, you'll now be reading a different speed by what the needle appears to be.

I love my RITON 6-24X50 X1 Conquer w/R3 reticle. The only thing that can be done to improve this scope is have center illumination. Still, for what I paid for this scope is less than most on Amazon at 179$ my LCS SK-19 is a widow maker when it comes to pest control. Parallax is very important. Without it you miss a whole lot. The differences night and day. Great informative video Joe.

Might be an Idea to explain "Holdover" & "Hold Under" using the Mildots for different ranges, & that once this is mastered, there is little or no need to alter the elevation Zero. Then using the Mildots for Windage which takes a bit more trial & error depending upon Wind strength.

My Parallax was 18" high and 25" to the right for the Gunners Primary sight, 10" up and 33" right for the TC's sight/ rangefinder and 0" up and14" right for the Ballistic Telescope. That is why they were bore sighted/zeroed to 1200 meters. But it was an M60A3. Could hit out to 4400 meters. SUPER close shots needed just a bit of "Kentucky windage".

Thanks now I know how to adjust I am trying to shoot further than a 100 yds I am loosing my eyesight from nerve damage so my eyes are not great but I want to be able to shoot at least 3 or 4 hundred yds before they go I was shooting hard left the other day at 100 and I adjusted 5 icks on my horizontal turrets but it barely moved but now when I go next time I will try to adjust the parralex was using a variable x3 4x14x40 with adjustable parralex in the front but I did not know what the numbers meant but thanks appreciate the info thanks Neal
