Oh man, even though you made the comment about grass being that close to lava, it gave me so many ideas of dragon fire scorched fields, or flaming castle scenes.

So...my previous comment was jokey and made at the start-ish of the video. But god damn...that base is inCREDIBLE. What an absolutely lovely piece, it looks like the building of a movie set. One of the nicest bases I've seen in ages, just amazing planning and execution. 10/10. So good.

Great tutorial as usual! That final touch to show the heat being active really sells it. As for that mini, I think it's the perfect example of bad flame design. The textured skin and cracks create a great effect, yet even when done by as skilled a pinter as Vince, those "flames" just look like static plastic. They do add the shape of movement, but the cloth and plume do that well enough already.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the flames either.

No questions vince, just for myreference - I know I'll forget the process before I start the second batch of bases after the knights are done. Reality itself rebelling as the Titankin march to war. Zenithal base -> white ink over lava spots. Paint the exposed earth dark brown. Roughly paint grass green as a base layer Highlight tufts with yellow Paint the flowing lava with super bright yellow 1:1 white ink&flow improver. Touch the cracks and let it flow. Golden brown over ground items and some grass tops to make it look dry Red ink+fluro orange 1:1 flow improver -> paint over the white, cracked lava. Paint around edges of the lava where it's not as hot. Lighter yellow in the centre of these lava pools where it's hot. Hull red and orange red towards the outside as it cools Pure black above the orange cracks. Edges where the heat is need to be black or black/hull red. Mostly black/red stipple where the grass would be burning instantly Grey drybrush over the most burnt grass areas to represent ash Smooth out lava pools and neaten them Tiny bit of fluro orange over the grey to show as hot cinders

Been trying to think of a way to do this for my Orks for a while, going for a burnt forest/city vibe so thanks for the inspiration. The irony of the build is the greenest/coldest part is by his burning feet but it does boost the contrast going fire on the base > green grass > fire on him.

I've watched your fire, internal flame, and this video but I'm a bit lost of how to bring a blue-glow effect out on a model with such a flat plane. Do you have any uploaded videos that could help me understand what's needed to tackle this? *Hears echoes of "if you have to ask you probably shouldn't be doing it"* 😅 Thanks again, in depth and helpful as always.

If you look at several of the Stormcast heroes that the Eavy Metal team or similar display painters have painted, they have this effect, But it's the same theory as here. Hot white center on the face of the hammer, then fading out to blue and then the stone. You can have some cracks and such in the same pattern throughout the body of the hammer.

I really, really like this. I've seen fewer people repaint the grasses compared to a lot of the other textures on a base. Do you find it something you do often to help control the color palette of a miniature, perhaps similar to using a mother color to tie things together? I suppose if you are basing an army, it there is a time tradeoff, but still.

I wish I'd heard the line about never try assemble models with superglue thin sooner than this video. tried that once. Tiny drop... ran down the outside of a large piece, then glued the model to my hand. Went back to gel superglue real fast. Very keen to try this with my house vextrix knights (green/black panels). One question if you don't mind; is it essential to use martial iron earth? I have a big tub of liquitex crackle paint lying around - will I get a similar result? Or is it one of those times you actually need a specific product? Edit: If I can sneak in with a second question; flow aid and gloss medium. Is there a need for THOSE to be liquitex? They're priced much higher than other brands like Galeria and Golden. I'm fine with paying quality if needed, but would prefer to avoid paying more than needed.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 жыл бұрын
So in general, any crackle paint will work (Ammo by Mig and AK also make great options). Same with the Medium, nope, Liquitex is just what I have, but anything will work.

@benstaffordson7163 2 жыл бұрын
@@VinceVenturella Well, after a few brands and a bunch of dud bases, I will say that the GW ironearth performs much better than the generic crackle paints - liquitex would've performed fine for a dried mud, but whatever goes into the solution makes ironearth perform way better. Better cracking and spread out, so the ink just flows between. Liquitex crackle gave a lot of fine cracks and disjoined lines, not neat segments.

I feel like the blood should've had a tinge of orange towards the bottom to reflect the light from him. It's a shame the fire effects are so bad, it's such a pretty model otherwise. Okay, I have a question kinda sorta related to this video. I have the Avatar model on order, and quite excited about its arrival. My Eldar army is based with a desert theme. Think New Mexico, with lots of rock, scrub, dead plants...that kind of thing. So, given the heat the Avatar would generate under his feet, and given that sand turns to glass when exposed to that heat, how would you tackle something like that? Be gentle, I'm still learning my trade as a miniature painter.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't. I don't want to burst your bubble, but that is going to be a crazy challenge. NOW - if you're feeling crazy and are okay with failure, then here is how I would try it. I would get some of the glass pieces you can get at the garden store for fairy gardens, preferrably clear. Then I would get some desert basing paste from Vallejo or AK or similar and some random rocks and desert plants. I would build out the base with the random rocks and plants around him and then put the little glass pieces directly under his feet so it extends out from his feet about 1/4 inch. Then I would fill in the rest with sand. Let it dry, then silly putty/blu tack the glass so it doesn't get sprayed. Then prime, then paint as the desert, but don't paint the glass. Then put some gloss over the glass to make it even shinier and make some of the sand go up onto the edge of the glass.

Hey Vince, do you think you can make a video on painting amphibian skin? Such as frogs, toads, salamanders, etc. I’m currently working on a few miniatures warriors that is part of the amphibian family, but I’m having problems painting the skin and the differences of the amphibious animals. Thanks.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 жыл бұрын
I'd have to think on that - what specifically are you running up against?
@channaodell5633
@channaodell5633 2 жыл бұрын
@@VinceVenturella Specifically making the skin look dry and cracked, or glossy/wet where some frogs are more into wet biomes and toads live in more dry and partial damp. So I’m having trouble painting the skin in those ways even though it’s similar to scales, but more of a smoother skin surface rather then a scaled one.
