I've had a hard time catching these Surf Perch for a while but that's because I never really was targeting them at the right time. Well, I think I figured them out, at least for this day.
It's also always grueling to haul around propane or a charcoal grill to cook with, but this little roll up Bison grill is perfect for a day on the beach.

The taking of an animals life is very hard as you get older. I used to run a trap line as well as hunt big game, upland birds and waterfowl. 11 years ago I realized how hard it is to dispatch a wounded animal. We were hunting ducks and geese in Kansas and I had to go retrieve a wounded Canada goose. It was a large bird and I walked up on it just laying there in the snow trying not to be seen but I was looking right at it's eye which was a little smaller than a dime. I could see the fear and it just made me think of my own mortality and I felt that to my soul. Respect is what we owe all living creatures. They not only provide us with a way to express our inner early beginnings as humans, they provide food and sustenance for ourselves and family. It's nice to hear the same feelings from other men that are hunter and fisherman. Bravo!

But thing is yall come from a land where you can walk to any grocery stores at any given time of the day and find all kinds of meat to satisfy you needs. Some of us don't, some of us have to be detached because we are primal for us is a life skill. Sure we respect the animal and always pray and thank for their sacrifice for us but that's really as far as it goes. I respect where you come from with your school of thought but it doesn't apply to all of us just like how my mentality doesn't apply to yours but we can mutually come to an understanding

I have practiced Buddhism for many years, yet I endeavor to fish, crab, and clam. I also worked in nursing for nearly two decades, and have been with many during their last moments. Death is never an easy thing to swallow, nor should it be. Respect the life you are taking, never make light of it. Always be grateful for the sustenance that it provides you. And be thankful for it all. I am also always reminded by science- EVERYTHING survives on something else’s death, even plants. I am 61 years old and have been fishing since I could hold a pole. Take solace in knowing all life survives because something else has died and that YOU value the life you are taking and do it respectfully. I am a recent subscriber to your channel, but you seem to be a conscientious and respectful human being. 🙏🏾

Hi, as you get older, (I am 57) your own mortality makes you think about how precious life is and that’s what makes us more conscious of our actions in taking lives. In the scale of things that happen in the world it is minuscule. The fact you are conscious of it is testament to your humanity. Take care my friend ❤️

It made me feel more “normal” when you said that the older you get, the harder it is to kill the fish sometimes. I’ve loved fishing for years, but the last couple of years I’ve been more & more uncomfortable taking their lives, and sometimes even feel a bit squeamish doing catch & release- it feels like I’m tormenting an innocent creature for my own amusement. Never thought I’d feel this way… go figure! Thanks for sharing. I’ve loved seeing your channel grow, your trips diversify, and your video skills blossom over time- and congrats on inventing the new fishing method!!🤗🤗💐

A lot of ground fish in the atlantic have the black lining.. For instance, cod or pollock have no lining, but hake and cusk (also white fish) have massive linings.. Spent many hours in my younger years at a fish plant ripping off heads and cleaning out linings.. Hard on the fingers..

It is very true, I've been fishing for more than 15 years and I can say it definitely does get harder and harder not to have emotion when taking a fish's life. I'm thankful for every fish I catch and it is important to respect the animal when it's providing you food. I'm an animal lover on top of it so i see where your coming from. I'm thankful for every fish I catch and the delicious meal it provides accompanied with a beautiful stick....no wait "just a little bit of butter" haha. Always exited when a new Fisherman's life video comes out! I've learned so much from you and you've inspired many youngsters and even people who want to start fishing and love the outdoors. Keep up the great content and always looking forward to seeing more!! Much love from Toronto, Canada.

I have always held a healthy appreciation for the fish and wildlife I have kept over the years, but this past year I began to feel a little more sad when I would keep trout. They are such beautiful and fragile fish that represent some of the best freshwater resources in the world, and the older I get the more I realize how lucky I am to have access to good fisheries and wildlife areas. I really hope that we can preserve these for the future, that's why I always try to pick up as much garbage as I can when I go fishing, then it feels like I'm giving something back and not just taking for myself.

I have noticed that it IS harder and harder for me to take lives while hunting, fishing, foraging. I grew up on farms in CA, AZ and MI with all of these activities...even trapping for meat and pelts (which I will never personally do again). But, I'm just so much more uncomfortable with it now than I felt as a teenager or even in my 20s. It's like once I left the military at 21 years old, I just am more sensitive to animal harvesting. Needing to eat helps me through! ha ha Just a lot more picky at what I harvest and more thanks said. : )

The black lining in the stomach cavity is an adaptation to fluorescent bacteria in the gut of many fish. It helps them stay hidden from predators in dark environments.

I think it is normal to get a little "soft" as we age because we acquired a greater appreciation for life. Giving value to the animals we harvest beyond the aspect of being food and realizing that they are a larger part of our world and appreciating that everything has purpose. The fact that you acknowledge and embrace that feeling is wonderful. Stay safe and be well.

I feel ya man on keeping fish. There are days I go out to with the plan to fill the freezer but find myself not wanting to kill the fish. I end up just having fun fishing. As I have grown older and have researched a lot of the fish I target I have come to gain a greater respect for the fish and see it as a life and not just a fish. It is good to feel those things when harvesting fish or any animal. It reminds me and lets me know my heart and mind are in the right place. It is a respect for the animal and a gratitude for food that you get from the harvest. Thanks for sharing. To be honest it helped me feel more normal when I am with buddies and I decide not to keep any of the fish I catch for that day.

I hope you read your comments. You use a thin tape measure to measure your fish, so my suggestion is, why don't you epoxy about twelve inches to your rod just above the handle. That way you don't have to run all the way back to your tape and you don't have to keep the fish out the water to long.
