This is really cool! Loved the video, and not just because I love the original 😂. I’ve been watching your videos after I came across the interview with Xiaoma. I’m absolutely going crazy over how interesting your content is!! Your channel Polymathy has inspired me to learn Latin (Classical Restored) and I can’t wait to get started! I’m a huge history fan, but it’s more of a consequence of my obsession over all the cultures of the world. I wanna learn more languages and I hope learning Latin will make it easier to learn even MORE languages. Also, I think your idea to learn Latin as a base on learning a pitch system in another languages is AMAZING! Especially since I plan on studying Japanese. The Japanese pitch system is extremely intimidating to me considering the MASS amount of characters to learn. Anyways, thank you SO MUCH!! Excuse me, I should say, gratias!

@@ScorpioMartianus what do you mean? most americans can tell [d] apart from [ʔ]. but anyways that would have been an awesome pun
@mewtubegaming3542 жыл бұрын
@@servantofaeie1569 I think it’s because in general North American English a t or d between vowels is pronounced as [ɾ], tap or flip r, found in Spanish, Latin, Arabic, etc. Aladdin and Alatin would sound the same, /alaɾin/. [ʔ] usually replaces t at the end of syllables, it something like bat. /baʔ/.
@servantofaeie15692 жыл бұрын
@@mewtubegaming354 No, no flapping before /n/. Alatin = [ʔʟ̩ˈɫæʔn̩], Aladdin = [ʔʟ̩ˈɫædn̩]
@mewtubegaming3542 жыл бұрын
@@servantofaeie1569 Yes, you make a good point. The d and t in between vowels especially before unaccented vowels can be gray area. When I say to myself Aladdin, I would pronounce it with the flipped r followed by an i sound (or maybe somewhere in between, some sort of retracted d, I’m no linguist). However, I think dropping the i and using d is also common as well. And if I saw a pun like that I would probably pronounce it with a full t as in the word latin, cause no one says /laɾin/. And I only use a glottal stop in between vowels in some fast words or when imitating a British accent 😅. Anyways, all this phonetic dispute is probably why he didn’t do it but an interesting inquiry nonetheless.

There is actually a good reason why a country strongly influenced by Arab culture might have a group of people speaking Latin while people are parading around on elephants and turbans, although with less of the word sultan and more of the word caliph. And I am not talking about the Eastern Romans. In Africa, in places like Libya and Tunisia, around Carthage, Latin survived for centuries after Justinian´s reconquest of it from the Vandalic Kingdoms led by Gelimer. It would be much more like Vulgar Latin and the Sardinian variant of Latin, but it was still Latin for a long time, evolving into a Romance language as French and especially Spanish did, before dying out about a thousand years ago, maybe pockets a few hundred years later.
