ET NIL EST!
Translated by Stefano "RVMAK" Vittori; see his KZbin channel here:

Nempe est quod esse pār est:
portenta tanta cōnspicis stupēns
jamque immemor facta es tuī (et amābilest!).
Jūcunda semper est hūmāna gēns!
Quem vidēs, Māui ille sum;

Nam, sōlis īnstar, sciō esse impār
rēctā nostrum vīsere jubar
Quid tibī plūra? Namque nīl est,
quod caelum, aestum, sōlem dō!
Estō sēcūra: ferre nīl est
mūnuscula ista sēmidīvulō!
Hei!
Prōfer quī caelum ferre potest
tē vāgiente (quī vir hic est),
noctis algōrem
quī raptīs ignibus fugat
(quī vir tē nunc spectat).
Pol!
Phoebōque vīnctō vestrīs (et nīl est!)
papandī lūcem gaudiīs
aurāque captā vestrīs - et nīl est!
tetendī vēla nāvitīs.
Istuc quidem - quid morer tē - nīl est:
sola ēmersaque factaque rūs.
At tū quidem parce - namque nīl est! - HA
supervacāneīs honōribus:
Et nīl est! Et nīl est!
Nunc perpende singula.
Ocelle, vōx sit aperta tibī mea:
omnia tē ēdoceō phaenomena.
Aestus, grāmen, solum
quid nisi nostra crepundia sunt?
Viscera condita vīperea
facta cocos tibi frūgifera.
Quidque restat? Ut mē metuās:
sīs tibi tūta, cavē impediās.
Vidēn haec cutis historiās
monumenta monēre meās?
Omnibus auctor ad īnfera ab altō
hīc miniō miniātus in ignibu' saltō.
Quidquid hoc est, quid plūra? Nīl est,
tibī quod bona tanta ferō.
Estō sēcūra, namque nīl est:
perpende singula. Interim ipse eō.
Dīcitō nunc vicissim "nīl est":
nam nāve tuā egeō,
ut hinc procul vēla dem - et nīl est!
Ūnum invidet nātūra: nōn natō.
Et nīl est! Et nīl est!
Valētō!

Ace Rockman haha I really did! 😄 And thank you for noticing! The little things like the sound effects of the clapping, or Moana catching the oar, or the chorus “ha! ha! ha!” are some of my favorite parts of a video like this - they’re not obvious, but something would feel like it’s missing without them. In case you were wondering, I slapped my own chest and arms for that sound effect. 😆

I think I finally understand most of the song, and I cannot help but just being in absolute awe. The translation is so incredibly clever and creative, all these stylistic devices too, I just can't get over how genius this is. I mean, I was already amazed when I first watched the video, because I had never seen Latin being sung so awesomely (yes, that's probably not a word) before. BUT WOW, now that I can comprehend a bit more of what's being sung, I'm just stunned. Good job both of you! The only line I still have difficulties with, is "nempe est quod esse par est". Can anyone explain this to me grammatically, please? I don't get how there are 2 "est"s or is this common in poetic literature? I'd be very thankful for any help, thanks in advance!
@ScorpioMartianus
@ScorpioMartianus 3 жыл бұрын
My dear friend the translator, Stefano Vittori, is an absolute genius! Nempe means “indeed” or “verily” and pā est means “it’s fair” or “it makes sense.” So “Yes it is indeed what seems right/sensible”

Remarkable that in these Latin songs some word-final consonants are dropped, and all kinds of things happen to word-final vowels! This is also very noticable in (sung) Spanish, where it decreases the number of syllables quite drastically sometimes. I wonder why though, since it's not always the case in the spoken language (or is it?) and many languages don't do this (to a high degree), e.g. English or Dutch
@ScorpioMartianus

Yup! This is how Latin was pronounced and sung in ancient times as well. Slavic language poetry like English tends not to elide, but synaloephe is mandatory in Latin and most Romance languages

If they spoke latin instead of austronesian, then there would be austro-romance languages spoken😁, Further the latin fits the ornaments displayed on the guiys body and in general.

Mate, I'm really trying to translate these lyrics, because I love this to bits, but I can't get past some of them. Couldn't find a translation anywhere either. Do you happen to have it on you? Things like "Nam solis instar scio esse impar" are confusing me :c
@rhumakrasna3375
@rhumakrasna3375 3 жыл бұрын
Instar + genitive = ut + nominative, so "like the sun": so: scio (I know) esse impar (that it is difficult-to-impossible) recta visere (to look directly at) nostrum jubar (my light) instar solis (like [to that of] the sun) ;)

@@tictacmaniac7415 thanks a lot, mate! ;) And don't worry, just practice by reading a lot of authors with translation on the side, until you automatically get the words and the rules and you don't need the translation anymore, accompanying that with reasoned study of grammar and active exercise. This is pretty much how I learned the languages I learned myself :)

Iv actually been having an issue with appositons and I'm hoping someone can clarify this for me. Let's say "I see my cat , [feminine name] outside . Would I use cattum meum or does "my" take the gender of the feminine name and not the noun.
@Unbrutal_Rawr
@Unbrutal_Rawr 4 жыл бұрын
Normally adjective gender follows the grammatical gender of the noun, but some nouns are *common* gender allowing the reference to gendered biological entities. Most of these are of the 3d. declension, I think: canis, bōs, cīvis, co(n)jū(n)x - use google to find more examples. Fēlēs theoretically might be one of these, but cattus definitely isn't. So if your cat is a she, you need either fēlēs, which is normally (or even exclusively) feminine, or the feminine form of cattus - *catta.*
@thaneoffife6904
@thaneoffife6904 4 жыл бұрын
I think it would be cattum meum since the noun 'cattum' is whats being described not the name of the cat. I'm not confident enough to say Im for sure right so feel free to correct me.

If the noun is feminine, the "meum/meam" is feminine too.
