@@matheuspinho4987 Fascinating. I hadn't seen this video before, even though I love Andrew's work, because as the son of a Latin teacher and doctor is classical architecture, I knew enough about Saturnalia and how it was co-opted by the Christians. This video was very interesting. Thank you for teaching me something new!

See the songs from The Nightmare Before Christmas translated into Latin at this playlist of my videos: kzbin.info/aero/PLU1WuLg45SiwuGR1H6ZRhLvusm1iQN7ay Commentary by the Translator Stefano Vittori: The translation is written in pure iambs, as those which can be found in Catullus 4 and 29. Unlike normal iambs, pure iambs don't allow any type of substitution, neither rational (two shorts = one long) nor irrational (one short = one long). Hence, while a poem written in normal iambs allows a remarkable degree of freedom to the composer (in theory, thanks to both rational and irrational substitution, an iamb can become a tribrachys, a spondee, a dactyl, an anapaest, and a proceleusmatic - Terence's iambs are a good example thereof, to such degree that Horace was able to transform one of his senaries into a hexameter*), pure iambs are rigid sequences of short and long syllables, creating the effect of a wild and unstoppable rhythmic stream: nothing would have been more fitting to recreate in Latin the musical and verbal patterns of the original English version, so effective in rendering Jack's excitement at the sight of Christmas Town's miracles. The stichic structure of the original song, maintained in the translation, is very interesting: the strophe and the antistrophe is opened by alternations of verses of a single iamb and of three iambs, closed by a sequence of three verses each of three iambs, with some variation in their number between the strophes. These final verses are joined to one another via synaphy (ex.: I can't believe my eyes / I must be dreaming, wake-/-up, Jack, this isn't fair - age, eja, surge lec-/-tulō, quis ista dig-/-na crēdier putat?): this last, very clever, device chosen by the composer of the original English text creates the effect of a long, concitated sentence pronounced in a single breathe, effectively rendering the protagonist's amazement. The epode is written in iambic septenaries (ex.: they're busy building toys and absolutely no one's dead - joca inter illa tū, ratis Charontis, ēsurīs). However, although this is the basic structure, the actual number of iambs per strophe shows some variation according to the music. Jack's original language is a high standard contemporary colloquial English, here rendered with a somehow eclectic register, mixing archaic forms (the infinitives crēdier, fundier) and Hellenisms, both of the classic taste (melos, "tune", "melody") and the late Latinity (horōma, "vision"), but basically adherent to the normal high standard colloquial Latin of the I c. BC - I c. AD. In two points the stream of iambic is alterated: 'stropia fulgida adigant / tripudiumque sonitet', and 'nisi parum mihi liquet / mihi placet, mihi placet': here, the replacement of the first and the penultimate iamb with pyrrhichs imitates the singer's way to pronounce the corresponding stressed syllable in the original English Stefano Vittori *Exclūsit; revocat: redeam? Nōn sī mē obsecret! (Ter., Eun., 1, 1, 4) ~ Exclūsit; revocat: redeam? Nōn sī obsecret, ecce (Hor., Sat. 4, 264).

Yes indeed! And this song it’s used to clarify that this is not /swa/ but /sua/ with two vowels
@ScorpioMartianus
@ScorpioMartianus 4 жыл бұрын
Occasionally Roman poets will turn vowel u into a consonant like ten-vis for te-nu-is, and sil-u-a for sil-va - Vergil did both of these. These are variants current in the natural pronunciation of his day. The diaeresis helps us know that the first u is to be treated as a vowel, not a consonant, and thus su-a are two syllables instead of one (one syllable is normal)
@nolder
@nolder 4 жыл бұрын
@@ScorpioMartianus In spanish we use it exclusively in "gue" and "gui" syllables when the u needs to be pronounced, like in "pingüino" (penguin) or "antigüedad" (antiquity). Otherwise it would be pronounced as in "guerra" (war) which "gue" would be pronounced something like "geh".Do you know if this rule comes from what you explained? Why is Jack singing in Classical when he is supposed to sing in Ecclesiastical (because he is from Halloween Town)?

Because he has embraced the spirit of Christmas! 🎅 haha. See the Jack’s Lament music video on this channel

Very impressive. Bravo! A little observation: "quid" probably should sound a little more like "queed" rather than the English pronunciation

Thanks! As for the pronunciation, actually not; the Roman grammarians attest to the alteration of the short i after qu and v in words like quis, quid, and vir.

@@ScorpioMartianus then it's may be a little bit like the oh sound, according to some renowned English-speaking grammarians :) no traces in any of the modern Romance languages, but still very plausible

maximas tibi gratias ago) valde mihi placet..sed pronuntiatum restitutum non exsequor... "с", "ae" et "V" magnae dignitatis non sunt. nullus romanus tuum carmen intellegit, quia accentus musicalis sermonis latini perditus est.
