@@RichSmithson I always loved how the announcers claimed these holds hurt the legs. I have three brothers (two older and one younger) and we practiced every hold imaginable on each other. The crab and death lock destroy the back fiercely . I had a friend that thought it was all b.s. I told him if he could last 10 seconds in my scorpion death lock I'd give him 20 bucks (Late 90's and I was 15ish). I took it easy on him for about 5 seconds. He wheezed in pain, but wouldn't give. He even gloated that it didn't really hurt. Then I raised that scorpion tail and dropped it in nice and deep. He cried like a little beech and never sniffed that 10 seconds. I laughed hard just typing that. Good memories. And yeah, Bret's was better.

I've been in the Boston Crab and handed it out on three occasions. I've personally seen the Scorpion Death Lock given to a guy out of genuine anger by a another guy. Yes, wrestling was the BOMB in the 1990s. Because I lived in a NYC suburb(still do), it was a RITUAL for my friends and I to go to Madison Square Garden, Nassau Coliseum and the Meadowlands for "house shows." The wrestlers gave the fans "that little something extra" that made them WANT to return--they made efforts to acknowledge them. Bret said that "you never forget your fans. They are the ones who put food on your table and pay your bills." He always had/has a warm smile when he saw/sees me.

@@BC-bf2eq I agree with you that wrestling has become a joke--that was even before the pandemic. What's not a joke is that wrestlers have tested positive for COVID and whoever does temp checks only does it weekly, not more often than that. Someone correct me if I'm wrong--wrestling is a CONTACT sport. If distancing is needed to avoid getting sick, at the very least there should be more temp checks. Sting didn't have to apply much pressure when he used the scorpion deathlock. He had the strength and size to make it look painful. I remember Ron garvin using the hold earlier than sting, but to me it was sting that popularized the hold from 1987 to 1991. During this time Bret was a tag team wrestler never used the hold until mid 1991. He did it with the left leg. Look like he was hurt people for real. But sting was my favorite so I was pissed. To me sting's application looks more natural and easy to do. Bret technique is excellent but a little too technical. Sting use to apply it with one hand. That to me look more impressive. Bret was always a great wrestler, but Sting was also a great wrestler, was supernaturally strong, fast, explosive and with amazing charisma. He just made Bret look a bit dull in comparison. They would have made a better tag team than rivals I think.

I remember, the day it was announced Bret Hart was coming to WCW, all I thought was that he and Sting would have a kickass feud because of the finisher move they both shared. Wasn't quite what was expected, however, much like the rest of Bret Hart's short-lived stint in WCW. :/ I don't remember if it was Bret himself who said it or if it was someone else from that era, but someone once said that "WCW had no idea what to do with Bret Hart". I think that quote sums up the whole situation pretty well. In my opinion, Bret added two things that made his sharpshooter stand out over the years: he executed it lower which made it look more painful and he would often hold it for a long period of time back during those years, which made it look more like torture than a pro wrestling submission move. As a matter of fact, I think the way Bret executed the sharpshooter on Stone Cold Steve Austin during their now famous match is one of the reasons why Austin became a fan favorite, because it looked damn painful and Austin just wouldn't give up. Sting however had the best turnbuckle splash ever. He usually didn't call for it beforehand and yet you could feel when he was about to do it.

If you want to explain to someone how terrible WCW was at storytelling, just show them Bret Hart's career in it Honestly, with the heat he had from Montreal, WCW could have still existed today if they had a Pat Patterson or even a Jim Cornette Such a waste of talent with the likes of Bret, Benoit, Jericho, Guerrero and so many others because the company couldn't book a table let alone a wrestling match Great upload as always WB

Sting vs Bret Hart should have taken place at WCW/nWo Souled Out 1998 for the World Title. Ending in a DQ as a way to protect them both, since it was Bret's first match and Sting's first title defense neither could lose. Then team up once Sting lost to Hogan in the Summer. But friction happen both enter a blood feud, that leads Hart facing Hogan at Starrcade 1998 and Bret wins.
@Pacuta_2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Bret definitely did the Sharpshooter/SDL better. Sting, even when he was younger, usually turned over slower and rarely sat back far enough to make it look painful.

Nobody snapped on the sharp-shooter like Bret did. Like the rest of his moves, he was flawless... Anyway, I have to say I don't really understand the gripe against "dirty" matches. When you have two legends like Hart and Sting you want to protect them both and dirty matches help do that. Besides, heels are supposed to work dirty! Anyway, speaking of dream matches, Hart v Angle is another one that gets mentioned a lot. Imagine the matches those two could have had.

Love Sting, his Stinger Splash and death drop were awesome, but he wouldn't sit back on the sharpshooter so it didn't look like he applied much pressure. Bret would hook the sharpshooter on nicely, sit low, and lean back, making the sharpshooter look like it was very painful.

The reason why nobody talks about these matches is because Sting, he has admitted it himself, wasn't a great worker like Bret was. He has to be carried by someone who can work. It wasn't so much the interferences that caused the issues, you had to use smoke and mirrors to hide the limited ability with Sting.

Always liked how it was always a struggle for Bret to lock in the Sharpshooter but when it was time to end the match and really lock it in, he wasted no time and made it look good from start to finish. In the end, legacy wise, the common wrestling fan will call it the Sharpshooter over the SDL. And I don't think it was a coincidence Sting opted to go with Death Drop DDT as his finisher later in his career to make it his own.

A true Hart v Sting dream match should have been face v face. This was the standard heel v face match that we've seen a million times. That plus all of the nWo screwiness just detracted from a match that should sell itself.

Technically they're ever so slightly different moves. The SDL hooks the opponent at the ankle while the Sharpshooter hooks them at the knee. The Sharpshooter obviously looks loads better but Sting did make attempts to differentiate the move at least which I believe Bret has acknowledged and appreciated in the past.

@@illkid86 No it is not. Just search "how to do the texas cloverleaf" here on youtube. The cloverleaf is basically a classic figure four leglock (which is applied by the arms not the legs like the figure four leg grapevine) turned over into the crab position. The only differences are in the position of the applier's legs: straddling the recipients body or one leg entwined within the figure four. Same hold. Same effect
