WrestleMania VIII hosted one of the WWF / WWE ‘s greatest ever Intercontinental Championship matches in history. Champion Roddy Piper defended the gold against Bret Hart in a match packed with storytelling and drama, and the match has stood the test of time nearly 30 years later.
Bret Hart won the IC title at SummerSlam 1991 in a critically acclaimed match with Mr. Perfect. In January of 1992, Hart dropped the title to The Mountie. While fans were a little baffled by this outcome, plans were already being put in place for Bret to regain the championship at WrestleMania. Roddy Piper won the Intercontinental title just 2 days after The Mountie defeated Hart… if Bret wanted his IC title back, he would have to challenge Piper.
The WWF used Piper and Hart’s alleged family relations in order to tell the story, Piper initially didn’t want to wrestle Bret as he had too much respect for the Hart family. Bret persisted though, and Piper agreed to a match at WrestleMania 8 against the Hitman. Piper vs Hart would turn into a masterclass in in-ring storytelling and psychology, resulting in one of WrestleMania’s greatest ever matches and one of the very best Intercontinental Championship matches in wrestling history.

Bret was an artist and the ring his canvas! He painted many pictures and stories in the ring. He invented the figure four around the ring post, he was first in the wwf to go through a table and give it meaning, not like Sabu who breaks them for the sake of breaking a table. He brought the ladder match to the WWF. His finish to the Austin match at Mania 13 was brilliant. His entire night at King of the ring 1993 told stories over three matches! I honestly think he was the best at telling stories in the ring! Anyone who can't see it, knows nothing about story telling and in ring psychology! Oh and no one hits the turnbuckle like Bret!

Like the match itself, this upload is an absolute masterclass I have always loved this match myself but your analysis of it and showing the subtle yet effective psychology is just brilliant Loved how Piper wanted to help out up and coming talent considering how high up he was. You never got that from Hogan or Warrior which tells you alot about who had real class in a cut throat industry Never understood the flack that Bret gets for his promos, yes he wasn't Roddy or Savage or SCSA but he had his own no nonsense style and for me it worked. Guess it's like marmite 92 was definitely Brets year as this would have been the match of the year if it wasn't for Bulldog at Wembley Piper will always be a legend in a league of his own for his promos alone. Always loved how he carried himself in what seems a ferocious business and to do what he did here, pure class Arguably your best work yet WB, absolutely fantastic

Such a great match, really enjoy these videos. I got to meet Piper in 2015 shortly before he died. I was working for an airline and Piper had just come into Boston, I saw him walking down the hall and was really just looking for a quick hello but he stopped and was so happy to be talking to fans. Took a few pictures and he put his arm around me and said I wrestled Andre the Giant 1,000 times. He was so great to talk to. When he was leaving he thanked my friend and I for the service from the airline and I was definitely marking out and I told him thank you for the great childhood memories and he had the biggest smile. Great subject! I was in the Hoosierdome for Piper vs. Bret. Both guys were great workers. Piper was one of the greatest heels ever, but for this match both guys were babyfaces. When the ref took a ref bump, Piper grabbed the ring bell and stood over a fallen Hitman. He could have made a huge heel move by blasting Hart with the bell. He ended up not doing it, keeping his babyface status but ultimately losing the match.

I had been watching WWF for a few months and this was the first PPV that i have seen (my cousin recorded it for me). This was the match that had me fall in love with professional wrestling and I just fell down the rabbit hole of watching anything I could find prior to Wrestlemania VIII.

Whenever the Hitman's in the ring, one thing that makes him worthy of the phrase, "the best there is, was and ever will be" is that you can always go back to his matches and can still be connected to it. It always had stories that can make you celebrate with him and feel victory as well, you can even feel sorry for him, lose with him, worry for him, love or even hate his character but you can still say wow, this was a great match! As well as made it look good not only for him but also for the wrestler he's with in the ring. That's what makes the Hitman standout and is still loved by his fans to this day.

Another home run analysis on an underrated great match. I was big on Bret then and always but I liked Piper at the time too. After the match, I loved them both and now I understand why Great job!

Do these for every single feud you can think of, and find feuds you dont and learn them!! Your completionist tendencies make these amazing to watch and remember. You leave nothing out.....simply amazing. WWE should take your videos and commentary, insert the full interviews / matches and make a program out of it.....would be killer to have individual feuds done like that.....Amazing work

WWF came out with a Coliseum release in probably 1995 or so Best of WrestleMania. This match was on that tape and I absolutely fell in love with it. I remember in Bret's book he talked about the color coming from a bump to the outside steps, but I'm glad you highlighted that. I love your channel my man.

That pic at 20:45 really shows how much Piper's health had deteriorated by the end of his life. Hart looks to be around 4" taller than him, when in the 1980s, Piper was actually taller than Hart. Piper was a little over 6'0" tall as a young man and only about 5'8 to 5'9" by the end because of all his health issues.

Love this match. I go back every once in a while to watch it. Piper looked great too. Piper himself said they have a cousin in common which isn't much thicker than water but a wee bit. I guess you could be right

Someone covered this match in a video about Professional Wrestling that I watched, it may have been EmpLemon or Super Eyepatch Wolf (Not here to advertise them) But they made a point how Roddy realized Bret was outdoing him and he had to play dirty, then he raised the bell to the cascade of booing that made him realize he shouldn't do it this way. So, he tossed it aside and fought the rest of the match as he should have. Was great storytelling. Glad you covered this match too, it's one I always want to see more on due to the story told in the ring!

Bret vs Piper is criminally underrated. Easily Top 10 maybe top 5 best WrestleMania matches of all time. Love the video. Have it saved with other Bret Hart videos. Love to see more Bret videos Bret Hart's first WWE Title run Bret Hart's road from losing WWE Title at WrestleMania 9 to regaining it at WrestleMania 10 Bret Hart in 1997. 97 was some of Bret Hart's best work minus Survivor Series

Piper was the better talker, Hart was the better wrestler, they both brought something epic to this match and it's a shame this match isn't ranked higher in all-time WrestleMania matches

Getting to shake Roddy Piper’s hand and tell him how much this match made me know I wanted to be a wrestler was one of the things I am most grateful for about my time in wrestling. Just an absolute master class in every sense of the phrase.

Piper and Hart outdid themselves with every aspect of this match. Now WB has outdone himself with this video homage to it. All exceptionally high bars to cross. This is a true timeless classic, and a great piece of nostalgia to start the week, Thank you WB!

1992 was a phenomenal underrated year for Bret, winning the IC title from Piper, the Summerslam classic with Bulldog, winning the WWE Championship from Flair, three classic matches with Shawn (a first Intercontinental showdown, a second Intercontinental bout that was also truly WWE's very first Ladder match, plus their world Championship match at Survivor Series).
