Man, those bells - chills everytime. Can't help but wonder: why do we feel goosebumps once we hear that unmistakable bell sound? Why did Harold choose the bell over countless other mundane sounds when composing this track? I mean, you name it: cricket sounds, water splashing, an engine backfiring, etc...why not any of these sounds? Here's my theory: going back to our earliest memories as kids, we associate the bell sound as a reminder of time. We hear the bells on churches (not all but some) every top of the hour, telling us the exact time. Bells were used to remind students at schools they better hurry or they'll be late. Bells remind us what time it is. To tie that into the movie, we know the movie is all about fighter jets & being patriotic, being American, etc. The bells tap into our feelings of patriotism by reminding us 'it's the time of reckoning' or 'it's time to face your destiny' or 'it's time to defend your nation', etc. When you mix excitement & testosterone with patriotism, the result could be the 'chills' sensation that most of us feel. BTW, i also get chills when i hear The Undertaker's original entrance bell sounds, not sure why. I mean, there's no feelings of patriotism involved with him, why do i get the chills then?

This is everything great about composing. It captures it all. The sleeping giant of an aircraft carrier waking at dawn; the dissonance of mechanical equipment; the tolling bell of fate and power. The threat and force within such a military machine..and the increasing heartbeat of rising tension. It's genius.

I really miss the magic of movie soundtracks nowadays... I man don't get me wrong, Hans Zimmer etc. are doing a great job, but everytime I hear a soundtrack it comes to my mind that they TRY to get more epic, get more stuff in... This soundtrack is basically a synthesizer and an electrical guitar. And it brought us one of the most epic soundtracks ever made.
@heros21108 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Sometimes it's the simple things that are beautiful. Some classic tunes from the 17th century never get old, for example. You don't have to re-invent the wheel all the time...

Not ahead of it's time. Absolute right time else it would have been superseded by others. Those planes will be history pretty soon, taken over by something computer controlled maybe or drones, and those actors , you can't replace them, they made the movie what it is or was. Brilliant move with awesome music

I'm going to go into it with as open a mind as I can, but it's already missing two elements that made it what it was: Tony Scott and Don Simpson. The new director's resume is less than inspiring as well; the only movie he's had that could be considered a hit was his first, "Tron Legacy." I'm of the mind that Paramount should have just stopped after Tony Scott killed himself, but since they're doing it anyway, I'll give it a shot; I'll just go to the matinee showing...

When I was about 6 or 7, I witnessed an F-14 Tomcat go down about a half mile from my house. The pilots were performing an areal display at Willow Grove NAS JRB (now Horsham Air Guard) for the annual air show. They lost control and couldn't pull up in time and they intentionally avoided a block of homes that would have easily gone up in flames. The pilots died on impact and any time I pass that road this song rings out in my head. Those pilots died with honor and took their own lives to make sure they didn't hit those houses.

I was a cinema sound tech in 1986 when this movie was in its first run. I did a sound alignment for a 70mm theatre, and the projectionist told me to thread and start the movie when I was done. (side note: Standard fader setting for a Dolby Stereo film is "7", most theatres run at 5-6 because 7 "is too loud.") I had left the fader at 7 when I was done, curious to see how it sounded. The trailers were as usual obnoxiously loud. But then, this music started up. Everyone of the 300+ people gasped....the kick drum was literally hitting you in the chest. The two surfer/stoner dudes next to me both went "Woah..." I was pumped, best sounding theatre I ever tuned up. But then, the afterburners lit...the whole room shook, the tiles in the ceiling were bouncing...I ran to the booth to bump the fader back down to 6, and was met by a very pissed off manager as I'd managed to knock down some ceiling tiles in his office. Good times.
