@@DanK123 Agreed. Shooting the first part under-exposed so the people and aircraft are basically in silhouette provides some beautiful shots. it feels like this was done for two reasons - the backlighting emphasises the power and size of the machines, and two, so the reheat flames are properly exposed without changing how everything else is exposed. The second (Danger Zone) part is edited together brilliantly to give a sense of the controlled chaos of the fight deck. I'd love to know how they went about capturing the crew so perfectly. Did they spend a lot of time on the ship observing the crew and planned their shots accordingly, or did they shoot a lot of 'B-roll' footage & extract the shots they wanted. Either way, the end result is superb!

35 years later and this iconic scene still holds up magnificently, just unreal & amazing! Certainly it was ahead of its time by several years. And the music just draws you right in, that low steady beat that promises much & eventually delivers as it reaches that exciting & unforgettable crescendo! Everything about this scene screams perfection. Words cannot describe how powerfully & euphorically mesmerized I was upon watching this gloriously upbeat scene for the first time as an 11 year old back in the early Fall of 1986, totally blown away & wondrously riveted as I was! Had never seen anything like it. For all the various elements work together harmoniously & fall into place seamlessly, the music, sound of the jets firing up, the lighting & its overall, dream like effect, along with the sublime cinematography, all of it just marvelously knitted together, with the end result being this beautifully surreal, fantastically rendered, trance inducing masterpiece, one that still holds up today!

it actually took me until 35 years later watching this movie for the first time that in this intro, a small storyline plays out, the theme being "messed up first time, nailed it second time through regroup and teamwork". at 3:03 a Tomcat comes in for a landing and it is a real ugly pancake, the airframe bouncing, struts flexing, cables snapping messily across the deck. The landing signal team looks astonished, as all their heads turn: "we all messed up on that one". Then a crewman puts a hand on a shoulder as to say "that sucked, but let's run it back better." Now for redemption at 3:13: the black crewman with his pointing gesture readies the team's focus on the incoming Tomcat, which hits the wire clean, pulls to a smart stop, and the iconic kick declares it a success.

Glad you enjoyed the scene. But it’s actually steam escaping from the steam catapults that send the planes to 0-120mph + 20 knots over deck speed in less about 3 seconds. Invented by the British but only the US builds them, being replaced by electro magnetic catapults that are far more expensive and needs humongous electric power.

More like 1 in every 2000 even has a chance at getting into the cockpit. IIRC there are less then 3000 active USN pilots at any given moment. Meanwhile obviously, there's a couple hundred thousand non-pilots in the USN.

Still one of the great film openings, and practically worth the price of the movie all by itself. Some of the great truths of film are that either A) beautiful cinematography or B) the skillful use of a soundtrack can make any movie seem twice as good as it is. Whatever failings the critics found in it, "Top Gun" had them both in spades.

No one who hasn't even had the privilege of standing in one of the observation areas to watch, much less actually been one of the dozens of young men working the flight deck during these operations, can appreciate the sounds, smells, nerve racking anticipation, dangers and thrills of carrier flight deck operations. These sailors have chosen duties performing the tasks involved in one of the top 5 most dangerous jobs on the planet.

It's called a "Tiger" cruise. I have been on a couple. My step father was a Navy pilot, so whenever one came up we usually went. Long time ago though. But I will never forget the sounds and smell and the feeling whenever one of these awesome machines were catapulted off the deck. And the night op's were even better with the afterburners all you could see on the flight deck from the bridge. Some of the greatest experiences of my life.
