We've all been HIM. Where everything goes wrong and you're a good person and you're just wondering, "WHY GODDAMN IT! WHY?" That is this universal story, right here. After Hours, one of my absolute favorite films.

I remember that NYC. When a movie like that could be believable in a pre Iphone world when Soho wasn’t a shopping mall and NYC didn’t exist for tourists. I miss that NYC. NYC lost its soul.

This is my favorite Scorsese film... I love Taxi Driver don’t get me wrong.... but I don’t like many comedies... After Hours is my kind of comedy. Great video! Thank you!! More people need to see this film, maybe in the coming years it will become a well known classic amongst Scorsese’s filmography.

I can see after hours being a Tim Burton film. It definitely has some of the themes as a Burton film. But Martin Scorsese needed to make a film like after hours. It gave him his love of filmmaking back. But it all worked out for Burton.

The producers Griffin Dunne and Amy Robinson actually brought Michael Ballhaus to Scorsese for this film. Scorcese says he was used to completing five or six set-ups a day. With Ballhaus, he managed sixteen set-ups a day. This was due not only to Ballhaus and his speed, but also to new camera lenses and faster film stocks.

I saw this film in the cinema back when it was released and I’ve loved it ever since, I watched it again the other night, which led me to this great review. I remember thinking that Griffin Dunne was such a great actor and was surprised that he didn’t become a huge star after this, I didn’t realise he was a producer. It’s definitely a Scorsese gem, I’d much rather this one than any of the more famous mafia gangster films that he’s known for. The surreal soundtrack is just brilliant too.

Hidden gem is spot on. The film I often go to when people ask for "your underrated" movie choice. It may be better know perhaps if it was not Scorsese's and wasn't beaten out by Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. But this is worth its own viewing. Bit rock n roll, reminds me of Won Kar Wei talking about making Chungking Express: I needed some fun not making an epic and let my creative juices flow

Thanks for the review. Been telling people to see this movie for decades. Good to see it being appreciated. Maybe Steve Wright, comedian, would do a review. Wright: "Man walking down a sidewalk sees a cat fall multiple stories and land on its feet then walk over to another cat and say "See, that's how it's done." " ha, that could be a synopsis of "After Hours". Also, John Demme's "Something Wild" is in the same vein as "After Hours", a NYC romantic comedy, Luv gone bad.

Nice upload! Got to call you out on the diner interaction. He didn’t order food ‘just to fuck with him’, it was another illustration of the guilt ridden side of Paul which to me is what makes his character attractive and illicits sympathy. He only went in there to have a piss and knew he had no money. The guy tells him he has to order something to use the bathroom. So he goes through this pretence that he is going to be right back, and to prove it, he orders something. Have you not ever gone into a place to take a desperate razz while pretending you’re a customer? It was done through guilt and trying to cover his ass when some other character might have just said, ‘ f you, see ya!’ Instead Paul again just makes things worse for himself and again it comes back at him later, adding to the mess he’s already in. Also yes, take that invitation to a loft in SoHo. This movie reminds me a lot of crazy nights in London in the late eighties where you would lose yourself to the city for a night, open yourself to the randomness of human connections, then somehow find your way back home with no car, no cell phone and whatever change you had left in your pockets. I’m a better man for having had those adventures 😉

That's a surprising appraisal of the film. My main thought throughout the film was that if Paul hadn't been so judgemental, selfish, or uptight he would have been able to avoid most of the troubles he ran into. The women he meet want a real connection with him. He pushes them away due to his own presumptions and therefore receives a deserved perdition. And even then, in the end he just ends up where he started. Meaning if he had just relaxed and trusted things would be fine, he would have been.

I dare say you seem to have missed the humor in this movie. As the creator of this video mentions, Paul was not a night owl and rather reluctantly went out to begin with since it was already 11.30pm on a work night. So of course he's not going to have a lot of patience for meeting people who aren't what they seemed (or what he was expecting) in situations that wasn't what he had in mind where things are going sideways at every turn. To each his own, I guess, but I never saw Paul as judgmental or uptight. As he says in the film itself, "I just wanted to leave my apartment... maybe meet a nice girl... And now I've got to DIE for it?!??!" The point isn't "What could Paul have done to avoid all of this?", it's the humor at the complete and utter futility of his attempts at just trying to get home when an impromptu get together with a girl he just met didn't turn out as expected.

The whole thing is a Wizard of Oz homage. If you look closely, there are a number of easter eggs. Scorcese brilliantly re-imagined the W of O in a modern urban setting as a black comedy. The women were the needy insecure characters he met on his journey ( lion, tinman, scarecrow) who are plot devices. Trying to view it through their eyes is missing the point
