Matt, I have been researching diesel heaters, not for my Sabre 30 but for a teardrop trailer to make winter camping more comfortable. What I have learned is that you can get carbon build-up while running the heater at low to medium temperature settings. A recommendation was to run the heater on high temp for a few minutes to burn off the carbon after each use. Most people only run their heater for 8 hours or so. If you are running yours for days while at anchor, you may need to run it on high for a few minutes every 8 hours. I enjoy your travels and looking forward to the big news. From Holland, MI.
@mattjohnson67164 жыл бұрын
We've been pretty good at running it on high for 30 minutes every few days just to keep the carbon build-up down. But based on it's performance before, and then it's rapidly forming issue when it was stressed, I think it was mostly caused by me flooding it when switching feed tanks... and a bit of the exhaust back flowing into the heater. I did pull it apart a few weeks later and had none of the wet sludge that I did this round. Or maybe I put it back together so perfectly that it cured all problems :) Matt

Fortresses were quarried to use the base stone for the tower footings. Essentially cleaving the tower whole from the quarry. Also for stability the wall width narrows as it rises. If walls are 10ft thick, the footing will often be double that and tapered as it rises. Dry wall masonry 101.

FYI. The freedom to roam, or "everyman's right", is the general public's right to access certain public or privately owned land, lakes, and rivers for recreation and exercise. The right is sometimes called the right of public access to the wilderness or the "right to roam". In Scotland, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland, the freedom to roam takes the form of general public rights which are sometimes codified in law. The access is ancient in parts of Northern Europe and has been regarded as sufficiently basic that it was not formalised in law until modern times. However, the right usually does not include any substantial economic exploitation, such as hunting or logging, or disruptive activities, such as making fires and driving offroad vehicles.

The soot will also build up if there is a dip in the middle of the exhaust. What happens is acidic moisture builds in the bend. This restricts the airflow and the heater soots up. I have one myself and found that out. If the exhaust bends down you need to have some way of draining the moisture build up. In an RV or van the exhaust always goes down so the moisture runs out. If you have ever been behind a car in winter and there is just water pouring out the exhaust this is the same thing. If soot builds in a pool of water that is bad. I will give you a link to a helpful ebay store that can help you beef up the install. They have special marine exhausts and other attachments. Also run it up to high before shutting it down and at intervals to clean the combustion chamber. Also keeping a small tank that you can switch to full of kerosene on the unit does the same thing for burn offs and helps clean the unit. Oh Georgie is so much fun for a cat, a grass eating machine! Look at the other products in their store not just this item: www.ebay.com/itm/Eberspacher-Exhaust-adapter-Bend-24mm-90-251226894500/332150273154?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3D2524501ce110491eba5754bbf3ace73c%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D15%26mehot%3Dnone%26sd%3D163662030593%26itm%3D332150273154%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057&_trksid=p2380057.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3A4cfc36c7-63d6-11ea-a226-74dbd18094ff%7Cparentrq%3Acb450df21700a4b7b6f2f2c9ffdcc4e0%7Ciid%3A1

There is definitely a dip in our exhaust run. I must say that I really think the cause is me playing with the settings when we first got the heater installed. Right after this I reset the controller back to the factory settings and all has been well since then. It's what I get for playing around with something I wasn't familiar with :) -Matt

I think I recognize that "house/keep". I think it was featured in one of those make-over programs. A lady from Australia bought it and re-habbed it to the tune of millions and then decided as her mother was ill she should sell it and go home to Australia. It was the shape and colour that makes me think it is the same place. Scotland Heritage Board made her paint it a "historic" colour.

Echoing below, with perhaps a more regional voice, many public footpaths go right through farms in the UK. I tend to use ordnance survey maps (available on your phone and in paper form) to follow the paths. (I have used maps.me too, but as an open source technology it is less, legally, reliable, shall we say. Also, ordnance survey are more detailed.) Such paths can often not be clear and may not look like paths, This is because if you can discourage users for long enough you (20 years, I think) the right of way can be ‘lost by disuse’.

Do you ever wish you had a wood/ solids heater?
@mattjohnson67164 жыл бұрын
Not really. I'd have a wood heater if we used the boat on the occasional weekends, but diesel heaters are just so much more convenient for liveaboards. It doesn't offer the romance or ambiance of wood, but with diesel we never have to think about finding fuel, thought to storage (it just goes in the tank) and nobody has to get up in the night to put another log on- the thermostat regulates itself. We haven't had this issue in the past few months since this was filmed (once I went back to the factory settings). Matt

Nice episode. Matt, does your heater have an air inlet adjustment? It looks like it running rich. The burners I've worked on had a adjustable orifice to control the mixture.
@mattjohnson67164 жыл бұрын
You can adjust both the fuel flow and air flow with these units. I couldn't tell if it's been running rich for awhile (the exhaust is perfect) or if it was a new problem caused by me switching diesel feed tanks. When I switched tanks, I had an air leak that I was trying to track down for a few hours. I knew I had flooded the burner, but it was getting dark and I didn't want to pull it apart then, so just fired it up and hoped it would either clean itself or at least keep us warm through the night. -Matt

@@mattjohnson6716 The high level of soot you removed looks like a long term buildup. Maybe double check the settings with the manual or brake it down while you're plugged in to dock power and see if soot is building up. Good luck and stay warm.
