What a beautiful low angle winter sunshine at the start of the match in the Western part of Argentina at the foothill of the Andes. Fun fact: both teams and the referees are wearing socks of almost same color. I don't think it would work nowadays. Jorge Videla is watching at the stadium. It has been said he had not attended a football match in his life before this tournament. There has also been speculation about Netherlands losing this match on purpose to avoid Argentina and Brazil in the second round.

The Scots had some fine players from '74 to '82. It's just bizarre how they couldn't get out of the group stages. '74 they were very unlucky. '78, they underestimated Peru (and played woefully against Iran) and in '82 Alan Hansen ran into Willie Miller.

The sad thing about watching Scotland take on, and outplay, one of the greatest teams of all time, a team whose total football took them to 2 world cup finals in a row, is knowing that a Scotland team today would never play this way. Needing to beat one of the best team in the world by 3 goals, todays Scotland would play for a 0-0 draw to bow out gracefully. I can't remember the last time I saw Scotland play with such craft and guile, we can't even do it against the weak teams nevermind the best

*Asa Hartford* was a great player, underrated, he was tireless, always got stuck in, great on the ball, drove everyone forward. Played in a similar style to Archie Gemmell. Man City legend, though he only won a League Cup with them and another League Cup with Everton. He played a staggering 973 matches from 1967-1991 for clubs and country (50 caps for Scotland).

The Dutch side of 88-92 was better than that 78 team,if cruyff had gone to Argentina instead of pulling out it would have been about even. Scotland on the other hand has seen a continual descent from that period,nowadays you are basically seeing a championship team level of quality.

Scotland are a fucking embarrassment right now. We got the sweetest group ever in the world cup 2014 qualification, and we're bottom with zero wins out of five. Not only are we no longer producing quality players, but we can't even produce average players who can punch above their weight as a team (like we did for most of the 90's). We're pish at football, we've been dreadful at rugby for several years(tho this last 6 nations we performed alright), at least we've got Andy Murray...
@billyb83562 жыл бұрын
I'm a Scotland fan but don't rate this win. It's the classic example of a pyrrhic victory. Gemmill's goal is a classic, but everything is undone by Johnny Rep's screamer barely 3 minutes later. After that the Dutch basically stop playing for the final 20 minutes, suggesting they aren't caring about losing 3-2, but only about progression to the 2nd phase. It is essentially a Dutch victory. I'd rate the 1-0 win over Holland at Hampden in 2003 more highly. Yes it was a two legged tie and we were routed in the return game in Amsterdam, but we were gigantic underdogs ranked 80-something in the world, playing one of the world's best teams at the time. We had no right to win and we did. An individually famous result, and unlike the 78 game, where the Dutch were seemingly happy to lose 3-2, the team of 2003 battered our goal until the final minute but to no avail
