Politics are always rough but public execution for your believes are currently illegal. I don't think there is much comparison. We just seem to be rerunning the gay debate of the 1980s with the trans. It's called Woke now and was called Political Correctness then.

Frankly, the Christians who want their religion taught in schools need to be reminded about exactly every act of cultural, language, and literal genocide that their religion has inflicted upon humanity since day one. This story, every woman who was sacrificed during the burning times, Native Americans who were taken from their tribe and raised as "Christian" to "save their soul", etc..😒🙄

This is why so many Presbyterians emigrated to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia in late 1600s. One of my ancestors counting 7 generations ago was Margaret’s oldest brother John, who left Scotland for Antrim, Ireland with two of his younger brothers, leaving Margaret, Thomas and Agnes. His great-grand-daughter, who had the gift of “second sight” saw two of her sons leave for a new life in Australia. There they became pasturalists, and the elder became the “Sheep King of Australia”. The younger was also successful and is my great-great grandfather. I always felt I would be called on to be very brave and stand up for my beliefs. When I first learned of Margaret Wilson, her story resonated with me deeply. I could only hope to be brave in the face of such fear. Thank you for telling the story so beautifully.

Bruce you’ve made several touching episodes over the past few years, but to me this has to be the most touching to date. While a moving story out of Scottish history, (which is what I know you focus on) sadly such cruelty was not isolated to, or unique to Scotland. Even sadder, martyring teenagers and children because of their, or their parents religious beliefs is still happening in some areas of our world today.

As usual Bruce a great piece of storytelling. I used to drive past the Maggie Wall memorial when visiting my brother who used to live in Dunning. Every time I couldn't help thinking that humans have thought of a lot of cruel ways of killing each other in the name of religion and how they think of more every century. That is probably amongst the worst, although there are a few to choose from

It's not really about religion though is it, other than as an instrument of power? The two sides to this story are not equal, nor do they have comparable motivations; the martyrs were standing by their faith, but their crime was essentially political.

Fascinating (and heartbreaking) history. Some 30 years ago, my dad came across a book called the Willson family tree, which traced the descendants of Thomas Willson up to about the 1940s-1950s IIRC. He is among the descendants via his mother, so I will be sharing this video with him, as he is fascinated by family history.

I am disgusted by how these ladies were treated because of their beliefs, but on the other end as an American, I'm also painfully aware of how people are treated if they aren't affiliated with some form of christianity. This brought back memories from 20 years ago when we had holidays regularly in a farm cottage in the hills above Creetown. We used to enjoy going to Wigtown for the book shops and tours of Bladnoch distillery ending with the purchase of a bottle or two. Having visited once we came back each year for a few years. Every time we found something else to enjoy in the Machars triangle. Also we found Gatehouse of Fleet and Kirkcudbright to be favorite spots. I remember this history and it's where I rediscovered the Covenanters, first heard about at high school in the 1970s and also the Stuartry. I always found something new every visit and apart from London there's not many places like it. Only thing I hated was the midges in the Forest of Galloway.

The story of the witch hangings in Pittenweem are, just like so many others, heartbreaking. But nothing to do with overbearing authorities, just the usual story of lifetime friends and neighbours turning against one of their own because someone said something etc etc.

Quite the contrary, state religions in that general time period were very overbearing. A shame that real history is not taught in schools. People died all over Europe for not accepting the state religion where they were living! It might be family, friends, or neighbors who turned them in, but it was the church or government (often the same thing) that killed them.

Apparently one of my ancestors, Grierson of Larg, (nickname The Red Gauntlet), was a King's Man & heavily involved in the 'Killing Times'. He once sent a letter to the King with a Bill for all the rope he was using to hang the Covenanters. At one stage there were around 1,000 Covenanters strung up at the Manse, in the village of Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire. The King replied thanking him for his Service & hinted that he'd heard there was a lot of water in Galloway & to use that as it would save rope usage. The King didn't pay the Bill East of Dumfries, just off the A75 is the now called Rockall Hotel. That was one of his main bases. Behind and above a Public Bar, in a case is one of his Red Gauntlets, rings & all.

So much of the history of the Covenanters was retold in grossly & grisly exaggerated terms by later generations. The “1,000 Covenanters strung up at The Manse” is just such a case. The total number of Covenanters killed in the whole span of The Killing Times was less than that.

America again. Been binge watching during our artic blast. The history is explaining to me some of the the foundational division that has found its way out in the open here. I watched "division between church and hate" and feel like I have a much better understanding of these extreme cycles. Also, makes complete sense with our fiercely independent, Appalachia folks. Hi Bruce! As always, your excellent videos cover much more than history. In bringing this family and old woman into the light, you've made them and what they died for live again. Both women may have died for the Church of Scotland, but their killings bring to bear the fact that such deaths were so unnecessary! In fact, there is never a reason to kill a good person. Not ever. You may disagree with them, you may not like them, but there is never a reason to kill or even hurt someone who bears you no ill will! That you're wishes for peace and harmony between peoples are the same as mine gives me hope that someday it might actually happen. Wouldn't that be wonderful?!

The martyrs died for the church of Christ, at the time of these events the Church of Scotland was an apostate, erastian church.

This makes me more curious about what the difference is between Anglicans and Presbyterians. I grew up Mormon and never knew much about other denominations. The trouble is, I don't understand the religious vocabulary of other denominations when I try to look them up.

I am a proud, proud adherent to Presbyterianism in Northern Ireland, and we thank the Martyrs, one and all Covenanters, Presbyterian, Free Presbyterian and the Church of Scotland.....Everyone remembers the Anglican and Roman Catholic dead...We must remember the Presbyterian dead, too❤

Yes, remember 1641. It is barely ever mentioned and when it is it is downplayed as nothing. Over 200,000 dead, many tortured to death, the plot organised by Jesuit priests.
