You’re right. I got the impression you had to be quite forceful to insist on singing live on TOTPs in the whole of the shows run to be honest. I’ve heard interviews of quite a few genuinely talented singers and bands who could sing live effortlessly but said they were new and young and didn’t know how to stand up to powerful execs and producers.

I worked in the manufacturing sector of the music industry and recognise every single one of these songs... as I was responsible for the manufacture of all of them on tape cassette. Literally hundreds of millions of copies of these songs passed through my hands xD If you bought a cassette in 1998, 1999 and 2000, album or single, doesn't matter, the bets are it passed through my print machine.

I was so excited presenting my own show, playing all these great songs (even the Cartoons 🙄) Scott Mills is great - i never climbed to his heights, but i spun discs for 27 years on loads of great British stations. This was right at the start for me - all these songs have a special place in my heart. Now retired wondering what happened to radio, and what happened to Britain? God, i sound like an old fart.

Exactly! They were never really a band as such anyway - it was just Gregg Alexander and varying sessions musicians. He said he pulled his hat down over his eyes so people couldn’t see how bored he was with the song. The album was brilliant though, and he became a prolific songwriter.

The thing with the New Radicals was that Greg was never comfortable with fame, and being in a band with others would somehow make him more comfortable. But I remember reading an article/interview where he said it didn't turn out that way and he suffered from anxiety being in the limelight. Hence why he retreated to songwriting for others. And he's a great songwriter too, so in a way, he had plenty of success over the years, but not under the New Radicals banner.
@Sphat90Ай бұрын
Well, the band may not have lasted as long as the label hoped, but it did the trick in getting Gregg recognisable - from about 2000-2003 every pop star's manager wanted them to work with him.

A tip for the commenters whining about how 'all music today is rubbish' (why do I see this bullshit under every single TOTP clip from the 1990s?): stop listening to Ed Sheeran and look up some modern indie bands. There's bloody loads of good music around now. We just don't get to hear it because streaming has skewed everything. (Oh, and Cartoons, Billie and Mr Oizo? All great artists of our time. Sure.)

I think that the issue of today's music is that the industry takes itsself FAR too seriously. Everyone's a singer/songwriter and wants to be taken seriously. The difference with the 90's and now is that there was a lot less seriousness back then, and much more music that was carefree, fun and great to party to. I think that's the gripe.
