No doubt about it, the Scott Patron is the most striking electric mountain bike we’ve ever come across. Not only is it an entirely new model for 2022, it’s also the first e-MTB we’ve seen from the Swiss brand to integrate its rear suspension into the frame. This follows a similar design ethos to the latest Scott Spark, with the shock tucked away out of sight. It certainly contributes to the Patron’s space-age frame design, which comes across as more of a concept sketch than a real-life mountain bike. But is this powerful, big travel bike only about the looks? And how does it actually ride on the trail? We’ve been testing out the Patron over the past few weeks to find out!

Great review! My Patron 920 just arrived a few days ago and so far I'm absolutely loving it. I did immediately swap the Dissectors for Assegai's. At $6,499 USD I think the Patron is a pretty good value.

Great review Wil. Wondering how this compares to the Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 HPC Actionteam that you've got on test? Obvious difference is wheel size 29" vs 27.5", cost (the Cube is $5K AUD cheaper), twinloc, but they both have a Bosch motor, FIT4 dampers in the forks and weigh about the same despite alloy rear triangle for the cube and relatively conservative geo- but I suspect I might have to wait until the Cube review drops for my answer :)?
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube Жыл бұрын
Cheers Sandy! It's a good question you pose, because the Cube offers some similarities as well as some key differences. Jumping between the two presented a stark difference in handling, primarily due to the Cube using 27.5in wheels and much shorter chainstays. It is way more nimble as a result, and is very easy to place on the trail. Loves jumping and carving corners, though the steering is a bit twitchier than the Patron. The suspension is also much plusher on the Cube. It's got great traction and it passes on less feedback through the pedals. Very impressed by how smooth it is. There are some annoying downsides that I'm currently trying to iron out before we wrap up testing, though all going to plan, the review should be hitting flowmountainbike.com in the coming week. Stay tuned! [Wil]

We did ride one back in 2018 when they were first launched, but I don't believe the frame has changed since then? From what I understand the Tazer now comes with a Shimano EP8 motor but it still has a 504Wh battery, which these days is on the small side. I suspect Intense is probably working on a new version, but I guess we'll have to wait and see! [Wil]

I reckon you probably could Neil! Our test bike has already gone back to Scott so unfortunately I can't check for you. Piggyback or not, it would be interesting to see Scott offer a specific model with a more aggro spec for the Patron. A meatier front tyre and a GRIP2 damper would make a huge difference to its descending abilities. [Wil]

I do love Scott bikes, especially the Genius range, but I am unsure about this one. I am in the market for an ebike and I am considering the Orbea Rise, as I want something that feels more analogue, but I do need electric assist as I am post surgery! My ideal would be a Twinloc system on the Orbea, but that is just not possible - Twinloc is one of the best selling features on the Scott bikes IMHO
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube

The Orbea Rise is a great e-MTB for sure! If you've not seen it, this is our review if you fancy checking it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXSkpKWhq9GEq5o Scott is yet to enter the lightweight e-MTB game, but given the Swiss brand has put a focus on producing svelte carbon frames across the Spark, Genius and Ransom models, it's surely only a matter of time before it jumps in. That cockpit and underneath the BB is a nightmare. Also one over the bars that cockpit will be demolished 😂
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube Жыл бұрын
The screen and controller are very prominent on top of the bars - I had to remove a wheel out on the trail the other day, and I remembered just at the last moment not to flip the bike upside down - that would have been a bad mistake! I spoke with Bosch the other day, and apparently if you do break off the Kiox display in a crash, the motor system is still operable as it's only a screen. This differs to the previous generation Bosch system, where the display housed the brains of the system. In fact, you can actually remove the new Kiox display entirely and just use the LED controller if you wanted to tidy up the cockpit. The plastic controller is still quite vulnerable though, especially compared to the more low-profile options from Shimano, Specialized/Brose, Trek/TQ, and Giant/Yamaha. [Wil]

Agreed - the stock protection is totally inadequate! You could probably add something to this area, like a cutting from an old tyre, but really it should have a proper skid plate given how low the frame hangs. [Wil]

After about 3 years the last Keurig stopped working kzbin.infoUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf initially was able to unblock, however eventually we couldn't fix. That one was a replacement unit sent by the manufacturer after we had problems with our very first Keurig. This works fine (lol, at least for now) however I didn't realize the water reservoir was so much smaller than our prior unit. With 2 people having one or two cups of coffee each morning, it seems like I'm refilling it daily. Otherwise just happy to have the convenience of pod coffee vs. making a morning pot.

@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube Жыл бұрын
It does seem like a strange addition for an e-MTB right? I can't say I've ever found myself wishing for a remote lockout on any of the other e-MTBs we've tested! Despite my initial skepticism, I will say after using the middle Traction Control mode, it does offer a significant performance boost for tackling really rough, technical and steep climbs. The added ground clearance is very useful in those situations. I don't think the fork should be linked up to the TwinLoc remote though. It offers little improvement in terms of climbing performance, and I also never used the full lockout mode, even when riding on the road. I'd much rather the remote only controlled the shock, and that way Scott could spec the proper GRIP2 fork damper, which would offer much better performance over the FIT4 damper. [Wil]

@@FlowMountainBikeKZbin I might point out, it's more efficient when riding XC trails. I ride trails most days that doesn't need more than 120mm of travel. However there's some sections that need the additional travel. Yet when I head out to more rowdier trails, I have all that travel to play with. You don't know what you're missing out on until you have it.

WAAAAYYYY, WAAAYYYYYYYY too much money for what you get. This is a boutique bike. That one piece handlebar and top tube is a joke and complete waste of time. This bike is about $11k USD. For this money all you are really getting is a well hidden emtb. The suspension lockout is not needed. And a MANUALLY operated cable suspension adjuster? What is this...2002?? Cool looking bike, but, nothing special.
