The 1990 big screen adaptation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was supposedly based on the original 1984 comic book series. The Dom compares them to see if that's true.

Just a quick note the 03 cartoon is currently the one that pulled the most from the comics, following the comic plotlines as outlines for pretty much it's full run, sticking to the comic backstory, pulling on the comic personalities/histories and even having several scenes that are shot for shot from the comics ^_^

I don't believe it's allowed anymore at all due to legislation (or just MPAA guidelines) on tobacco advertisement, but in the early 1990s and before, film studios had fake vegetable-based cigarettes and cigars made that "smoked" like normal cigarettes but were deemed "healthy" for when children or non-smokers needed to smoke. A few years ago, I was at a screening of the 1980s cult film Monster Squad when one of the actors (Ryan Lambert, who played Rudy) said in the Q&A after that they gave him the fake cigarettes for his character to smoke since he was only 15/16 at the time, but he would replace them with real cigarettes when no one was looking.

Tobacco products in films and television are usually made of cabbage or fake cigarettes with fruity flavouring, the latter of which actually has like, two commercially available brands. Also, they recently started to allow smoking in films with an R-rating again, and in M-rated TV shows, they just can't use real brands and when aired with commercials they can't be advertisements for kid's products. And it was two laws that banned it in the first place, in the 70s advertising cigarettes on TV became illegal in the US, and then in 98 it became illegal to have product placement for tobacco companies in any entertainment accessible to kids though it wasn't well enforced until the mid-2000s.

You know, it’s funny, there’s so little demand for an accurate adaptation of the comics that the actual closest one, the 2003 series, has kind of faded from any discussion about the franchise. Oh, it took plenty of cues from the 80s cartoon and this movie, but it’s primary source was definitely the original comics. I’m not upset that you made that mistake though, as you said you barely know anything about the franchise beyond the general knowledge. Honestly, doing a Lost in Adaptation of a comic book series is way trickier than trying to do one for a novel, because there’s just so much that winds up rearranged. You couldn’t make a 90 minute film out of one issue after all, but you can’t always include the next issue because you can’t guarantee that it will have any connection to the first beyond the cast. At least with a book you’re more likely to have enough content to fill your runtime.

I have to correct something you're saying. The 2003 series is a mixture of the 80s series and the comic book. They do retread the same storyline that the movie does, but then they also introduce Baxter Stockman, who is closer to his comic book counterpart than the original animated Stockman. He also is never turned into a fly. The 2003 series also goes its own route, though, especially with its Shredder, but it doesn't really take it's cue from the 80s cartoon as much as you'd think.

One of my favourite bits of trivia from the original comic is that it's Donatello, my favourite turtle, who saves the day. When the turtles offer the Shredder a chance to commit honourable suicide, the Shredder pulls out a grenade to kill everybody on the roof. Donatello throws his bo at the Shredder, knocking him off the roof and only exploding himself.

@@xanthippepink485 Also, none of the MCU movies really qualify as adaptations. They draw elements from the comics, but pretty much tell their own stories. Even ones that draw titles from the comics are In Name Only. Heck, Infinity War draws more from Thanos Quest and The Infinity Gauntlet and the actual Infinity War comic. However, The Avengers and most of Earth's other heroes were little more than canon fodder, and "the snap" was actually at the beginning. Reversing it was the goal. It was mainly between Adam Warlock and Thanos.

I have a recommendation that I think you will really enjoy: Dolores Claiborne by Stephen King. Both the movie and book are good as separate entities and it's an interesting take on adaption and what details work best as visual versus written.

I always wondered why the 2003 cartoon I grew up with had April as a scientist and not a reporter like most other reboots. I’m glad it turned out to be faithful to the comic and not something that was just made up to make April cooler or something.

OK, I know this doesn't matter but I can no longer get over it. Why do so many people pronounce the * character as "Asterix?" This is not a 1960s French comic book character, it's a typographical sign called an "asterisk." SK vs. KS, in terms of sounding it out. Again, it's a really petty pedantic nit-pick but it's been gnawing on me on KZbin.

OOoooh. Now I get it. See, in the animated show first... few episodes, at one point the turtles are infiltrating Krank's sphere thingy. While inside, Donatello smashes a giant robot, turn to the camera and yells "TURTLES FIGHT WITH HONOUR!" In the show it was completely random, but seeing the panel of one of them saying "Turtles DIE with honour" makes me realise it was a more kid-friendly call-back to the comic.

I own all 4 of the main films, let's not mention the Bay monstrosities, but I'm waiting to watch them until I have the miniseries connected to them. Oh and these guys crossed over with the Power Rangers in Space. I've seen a few episodes of the original show but I grew up watching the 2003 show so that's the one I think of as the Ninja Turtles.

"the miniseries connected to [the movies]"? You mean "The Next Mutation"? I would advise skipping that entirely. (At least don't put off watching the movies for it.) It's terrible and not really connected to the movies at all. Before the Michael Bay movies and Rise of the TMNT existed, "The Next Mutation" was nearly universally agreed to be the worst version of the TMNT ever created.

When will you KZbinrs finally realize, how awful this Patreon-Request format is? Please think of other rewards for Pateons (if simply creating more content really isn't enough - which it should be, btw.). I see an increasing amount of sub-par episodes as a result of, frankly, dumb requests. You're selling out your creative freedom by giving some internet randos agency over your content for money. Of course, you can get inspiration from your fans or do polls, but if your episodestarts with: "This is a bad idea and I wouldn't have done this if it wasn't a request" something went terribly wrong. This was not a good episode, not because it wasn't done well, but because it didn't fit the format and because you were, clearly, not a suitable match for this franchise. Yes, I know that you depend on the generosity of your patrons, but there has to be a line somewhere, that protects your artistic integrity.

About the underage smoking laws: there really weren't any back then. That was a thing of the mid-'90s. In my day, elementary (primary) schoolyards were as likely to have a tiny smoking area as not, and the only thing keeping a five-year-old from walking up to the counter and buying a packet of smokes was either (a) that the person at the counter knew your parents and knew they didn't allow you to smoke, or (b) the store was across a street you weren't allowed to cross yet.

The 2003, and the recent 2012 version had both pretty dark storylinesfrom the original and had the elemments you mentioned. The 2003 is more gritty while the 2012 is more balanced between humor and darker storylines. I mean splinter is really broken at one time through a messed up family drama. And both have them travelling through space and time, even haning a wonderous adventure with david tennent. And with the same recurring characters appearently based on the movie. And the conflict between the kraangs and ultrons. 02 has them hinding and training on a farm too. Endbattle with shreddar on rooftop..They pretty much adapted those storylines in the new series. Besides that i think the dom would love the 2012 version. Or other versions. The turtles area bit like dr who, always returning in a new form.

At least you understand the title more than say Michael bay did. When I hear the title spoken Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, at least I understand who the good guys of the film are. Bay thought they were space teen aliens from Mars with attitude. Not understanding the story is one thing, not understanding the title and the fucking words coming out of your own mouth is just fucking stupid.

I like the idea of splinter actually being Yoshi, a real ninja instead of a rat who simply copied his master. It gives more authenticity to Splinters abilities as a master of ninjitsu and his knowledge of it. Instead of a rat who simply copied his masters work out routine and having no real idea of what it all meant until he got oozed. This is a personal preference I love splinter no matter his origin I just think it brings more depth to his a character and his history and understandings of the mystical side to the world.
