Scott is not imagining these fights, this is just the reality of this world. This is based on a comic book which took a lot of inspiration from videogames. It's just not meant to be taken seriously. In this world everything just feels like a videogame and people burst into coins when they are defeated. Also the Sex-Bob Ombs sounds awesome and all their songs were written by Beck and performed by the actual actors.

I mean... the comics literally say the opposite. Remember the middle school guy he stole the redhead from? Remember how he wasn't some evil genius, but just a poor kid Scott bullied? Remember how Scott didn't actually "punch him around the world", despite Scott remembering it that way? Remember Scott's moment of realization when he figured out he's falsifying his own memories? Yeaaahhh...
@dlweiss
@dlweiss 2 жыл бұрын
@@happyslapsgiving5421 You're right, but that's one of the MAJOR differences between the comic and the movie adaptation. In the movie, we're given zero indication that the fights aren't real, or even exaggerated - and in fact the movie version gives us tons of indications that everything is happening exactly how we're seeing it, and it's just a heightened world with zany fights. You have every right to dislike the movie adaptation's choice to portray things that way, but it doesn't change the fact that the movie does treat all the fights and powers as genuinely real things.

@@dlweiss In the commentary Edgar Wright says that all the visual things are us seeing things how Scott sees them. But he does also say that their reality is one in which putting time into fighting games makes you a good fighter in real life, which is why Scott wins the fights.
@Jaspertine

It's more that Scott is an unreliable narrator, so even if it's not strictly "imaginary," it's still Scott's version of events. More importantly, though, the fights are metaphors for the emotional baggage that people are saddled with at the end of a bad relationship.

I find it funny when people act superior, for enjoying an Edgar Wright film. It’s not by any means difficult. He’s a brilliant director and it’s no unique or special to enjoy his films. Nobody should have the need to feel THAT important. You sound like a prick. You sound like Gideon! Lol “I find it SO funny when people get so confused…” etc. there’s NO GOOD CONCLUSION to that sentence. You sound like an asshole. And if you told the truth about your age when this came out, then you’re like 27-28 right now, and you should know better. I’m way older than you, but I’d expect you to call me out if I said some stupid shit. Come on noob.

Scott has been fighting against the "negative" part of himself the entire movie. Even during the DDR sequence, he can never get past the "shadow ninja". Nega-Scott is a "nice guy" because Scott has accepted that it's part of who he is, and is growing as a person, so they get along. He's the entire point of the film condensed into 20 seconds.

The "boss fights" with the exes aren't just in Scott's head. Everyone else sees them too. The whole movie is a mash-up of video game and Japanese manga tropes, and all the characters inhabit the same surrealistic world, though all the fights do serve as metaphors for how people in relationships struggle and cope with each other's personal baggage as well as their own.

Nega Scott is poke at a common fighting game trope where at some point you have to fight like the evil version of yourself, but the catch is that since the real Scott is a jerk, his opposite, Nega Scott, is actually a really cool dude.
@Eidlones
@Eidlones 2 жыл бұрын
It's actually how Scott's come to accept his own faults, and like himself as a person. Scott gained the power of self-respect. Before that, he was trying to use Knives to bolster his self-esteem. When him and Knives are playing DDR, it's meant to symbolize him using Knives. It works fine for a time, but when it comes to the real problem (his own reflection, which he must deal with himself), he fails. Cause Knives is just a temporary fix without dealing with the actual issues he has. It's mirrored at the end, when they have the DDR text show up in the end fight, but this time, instead of fighting his mirror self, trying to reject a part of him, he accepts it. And succeeds. Cause he has respect for who he is, warts and all.

I saw an animated short that came out leading up to this film, Scott is revealed to be the best fighter in all of Toronto, he was dating Kim (drummer) and she got kidnapped by a rival school, so Scott beat up 100 people, including a boss fight, to rescue her. So Kim was very much into Scott until he broke up with her, and now she's just full of annoyance and rage that she is in a band with this guy who is an oblivious douche.

Dudes, this was all REAL! Not in his head, or whatever… Don’t know if either of you have been to Toronto, but there were a boatload of T.O. based jokes. My fave was “they make movies in Toronto?” And yes, it’s rare when any major studio movie is actually set in a Canadian city, rather than a Canadian location standing in for an American setting. That’s one of the biggest reasons why this is one of my fave movies.

@Jermare Yes. Probably way more than in Toronto. But again, it’s usually a stand-in for an American city.
@MarcosElMalo2
@MarcosElMalo2 2 жыл бұрын
@Jermare Toronto was one of the first cities where a substantial amount of Hollywood Production fled due to lower costs-and because you could replicate many different U.S. locations. When Toronto became too busy (i.e., the infrastructure could only service so many productions), other locations became popular, both in the U.S. and Eastern Europe and I suppose Vancouver. Previous to Toronto becoming a big production center, it was common for many movies to shoot the majority of scenes on Hollywood soundstages, and then spend a week or two on location in whatever place. And whenever possible, they used L.A. locations when the locations could reasonable be stand-ins for the movie or tv show setting. And in some cases, they’d send out a skeleton crew (aka, second unit) to a distant location if they just wanted establishing shots of settings (the cliche car driving across a well known bridge into a city, for example). With regard to saving costs, I’m of the understanding that the governments of these various non-Hollywood production centers offered various tax incentives and funding options-like CBC co-productions. California has had to follow suit (at least with regard to tax subsidies. Iirc, Toronto at the time was non-union, so crew salaries/benefits were lower. Today, IATSE has a stronger presence in Canada. But don’t get me started on union vs non union labor.

I would have thought 'based on a comic book' would have been some place they'd be aware of before going in and to not try to think too deeply about it. Not that comic books can't be deep just - this is clearly all VERY stylized and not some sort of mental health commentary.

George had the same sort of issue with Monty Python and the Holy Grail. But who are we to criticize and say he is wrong, even if he is very wrong. It's crazy how tripped up George can get. He asks a little too many questions and doesn't take it for what it is. This leads to them misinterpreting something, or flat out missing information that would have helped him with their questions.

The Clash At Demonhead song is called Black Sheep, by the band Metric, but with Brie Larson actually doing the vocals. It's a great song.

Michael Cera actually had to dumb down his guitar playing because Scott is supposed to be an average guitar player. This film was a commercial flop when it was released in 2010. Which is sad because this is one of Edgar Wright's most unique films in a very unique filmography. As stated it is based of the 6 part series(which was actually incomplete when the film waa in production). Also this film has an INCREDIBLY stacked cast. Also, yes EVERYONE loves Wallace, who is played by the brother of MacKully Cullkin

All the original music was written and supervised by Beck and performed by the actors themselves

The soundtrack has so much music than that. Beck only wrote Sex Bob-Omb's songs, although that does include several songs. Envy's song was by Metric. The twins song were by Broken Social Scene. Then there were other soundtrack songs by other famous artists.

My wife and I went to Toronto for our anniversary (we met there and had our first dates there) and as part of it we went to Cassa Loma. We went up the stairs on Davenport Road coming to the back end of Cassa Loma. It was near the end of April, but when we got to the top it looked like it was January. Beautiful white snow all around, except it wasn't snow, it was large sheets of foam that looked like snow but you had to touch it to tell it wasn't snow. There was a lot of lighting equipment and other things set up. We saw a guy working on some stuff and asked what was up, they were setting up to film the Cassa Loma scenes for this movie (evil X #2).

Simone & George, Fun Fact: When you get your hands on the comic book/video game of this story, the locations in the comic & game are drawn from actual locations in Toronto, as well as some of the songs in the movie were written by the artist "Beck". Yeah, there have other movies filmed in "video game" mode, but this live action version of the story film in "the mysterious land of Toronto, Canada" makes this film stand alone from the others. I've been a subscriber to your channel for a short while & seeing you two in the same room for this reaction video made it that more special. GREAT REACTION VIDEO YOU TWO!!! I absolutely LOL when Simone says: All these time jumps are crazy. Maybe it just shows that he's really distracted?" George responds: "I mean that's what I felt when I was on shrooms." Simone: "What are shrooms? That's weird? I've never heard that word before." CLASSIC!!!

It blows my mind how many people get upset that Scott didn't end up with Knives. The wholenthing is that Scott and Romona are both kinda shit and hurt everyone around them which is why they belong together.
@michaelccozens

I'm not sure what Ramona did, particularly. Seems more like her exes are trying to control her. Scott starts as a dick, sure, but he's at least trying to be better by the end, and making some amends for his past sins. That's about the best most of us can do, and better than many of us are currently doing. It is weird that people would want the obviously-exploitative relationship between Scott and Knives to continue. They could be friends, maybe, if Scott became less manipulative and discouraged the immature starry-eyed worship from Knives. As it stands, the relationship is pretty abusive. Maybe people think Knives' intense desire for Scott (or, at least, her idealized/romanticized version of him as "the cool guy", generally) should be rewarded, based on past personal experiences with unrequited interest? Even that's quite toxic, though, as Knives isn't actually interested in Scott as a person (she gets something of a pass on that because, y'know, 17, and on the immature/inexperienced side, to boot). If you actually love someone who doesn't return the feeling in the manner you might hope, you tend to think about what's best for them, not for you.

@@chrisbergsten1429 This is a very good interpretation. I’d also throw in something that you didn’t make explicit: the evil exes are evil . . . to whom? Something that I realized about my long line of crazy exes (who all seemed like wonderful people at the beginning of our relationships) was that they all had one thing in common: Me. Maybe I was the crazy one, maybe I made them crazy. Maybe it was me that was cruel and toxic. The reality (of my life) is that it was probably a mix, a meshing of our crazy gears. Regardless, I have to accept that I have been a piece of shit in my relationships with others-if there is joint blame, it’s better not to dwell on that. It’s better to focus on what I can change, which is me and my defects.
