Just another stunning arrangement, this time from the work of the most brilliant organist of early last century, of this famous orchestral piece by Tchaikovsky. And of course, the sheer bravado of Jonathan's playing. Not only that, but the organ itself has a gorgeous tonality, even at full stop there's a quality of musicality to the voice that is incredibly touching. Well done Nottingham's city fathers (and mothers) and the city's citizens for keeping this organ and the Hall in such wonderful condition. A round of applause for you all too.

“So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.” Joshua 10:.....13. this triumphant scripture comes to mind because it signaled the great victory wrought by The Lord on the behalf of His people Israel. In that love triumphed over hate in the midst of two lovers deaths; the blood of sacrificial love wins out over and above the fiercest forces of the powers of darkness and ignorance. This transcription and performance confirms this, in my humble opinion, as one of the best of Tchaikovsky’s works. Jonathan Scott is THE MAN! The organ achieves a visceral, spatial, piercing atmosphere that describes perfectly the brooding, clashing, and violent turmoil of family animosity set against radiant love. I think I even prefer this transcription to the orchestral version. It is very profound and provocative. Congratulations Mr. Scott; you have a new fan. I took note of your somewhat gingery, fiery visage; very fitting of this glorious rendition. Sincerely, Paul W. Green

It isn't only the amazing twenty minute fault-free playing by Jonathan - it's the wonderful filming and editing in this piece. Some of the scenes are so subtle you'd hardly notice them taking place but there is one where the pedal board is on screen for only one second but makes such a difference to listener appreciation. Thank you for making this my go-to video - I have run out of superlatives.

Astonishing. A monument to the art of organ music. Every detail so meticulously elaborated and so essential to the final effect. Words, images, sounds all blend and stir imagination to create a unique experience. The instrument seems to be in very good repair and has some interesting peculiarities. A mature masterwork by the always amazing Scottbrothersduo!

A challenge to handle so many orchestral details with so few piston presets (therefore requiring frequent hand registration) - a challenge met superbly, as usual with masterly playing. To apply superlatives is always risky, but you, Jonathan, must surely be one of the greatest organists playing in the world today. Thank you (and thank you Tom). Also interesting to hear an historic arrangement by the organist who opened the original instrument (the minor changes to the specifications made in 1926 appear to be good choices as far as can be told without hearing the voices).

It looked like a VERY difficult piece to play. Way beyond Bach level of difficulty. Who would have imagined, that piece of music, inspired by an English playwright, about two Italian families, written by a Russian composer, and it leaves you in awe.

Utterly incredible. What amazing technique. Again, I am moved to ask, 'Who needs an orchestra?' The organ sounds magnificent, even through the speakers of the computer, and thank goodness the hall has not been visually ruined by those batteries of lights and speakers which some ignorant and insensitive fools so often chose to hang from the ceiling.

Amazing. Really good to see close up the use of the manuals and the registration. That thumbed-down tuba octave scale in octaves was thrilling. The string sounds are very effective. I know the building well but have not heard the organ very often and have recently played a much smaller 2 manual Binns.

Holy Cow! What beauty and what brilliant playing! This is the perfect organ for this transcription. I wonder if Lemare may have written it for the opening of the organ? The action seems to be well-regulated and quick. And for 1910, four adjustable pistons per manual was pretty generous, as is the complement of couplers. This was definitely built for the "transcription" market. I forgot several times that I was listening to an organ. And I, for one, am SOO happy that the instrument has been preserved in substantially original condition, and sounds beautifully well maintained. Kudos to Nottingham!

@@Offshoreorganbuilder Hello. I did suggest this tongue-in-cheek. It make me cringe when I think of past organ performances at the Proms and the organ has not even been tuned. Just think - a night at the Proms dedicated to organ transcriptions...... Nope, it will probably never happen. All the best to you.
@Offshoreorganbuilder6 жыл бұрын
@@iantaf5559 Sadly, you are correct. They spent a colossal amount of public money, having the organ renovated, and I am led to believe that it is seldom used.

I think it's a wonderful idea...but as the majority of us organ-transcription enthusiasts agree, very unlikely to ever come to fruition. Rather short-sighted imho. Too Victorian for the powers-that-be....

@@iwasglad122 Thanks for your response, David. It would probably be too much to expect some organ music at the Proms that is not composed by Widor, Bach or Saint-Saens either... Trouble is, the general music lovers think that the only organ music ever composed was by these three. Just listen to Classic FM..... Kindest regards

There was no cell phone in the story of Romeo and Juliet. rssss... Jonathan is a tightrope walker, because he does a difficult juggling act for this record. It's almost a wrestling match with the pipe organ. The fact is, playing the pipe organ is for a small part of people all over the world. It is a very special musical instrument for special people. And playing like Jonathan, honestly, I've never seen another one with the same performance. Of course, not diminishing the other organists. But in my opinion, Jonathan is still in pole position. And Tom's filming, in the same pattern as Jonathan's performance. Congratulations to the two musical stars.

Jonathan is not the only organist to conquer the deficit pistons situation when playing transcriptions like that. Edwin Lamere did it routinely and so did Virgil Fox and many others of period before all the magic of computerization made organists dependent on pistons, levels, folders and all sorts of gimmicks that, once installed are rarely used because they cause so much confusion these modern day organist, who are sublimely ignorant of how to play, can not deal with it. This is opne organist trained in the Old School and shows it with every performance.
@Engineer97363 жыл бұрын
You are refering to the setzer system? I think nobody has a difficulty using it, it’s pretty straight forward. It takes big names like Virgil Fox to actually skip the setzer system - doing the registration on the fly manually, by knowing the entire organ very well. In this particular video the setzer system is used as well sometimes by the way 🙂
