The first of my 'Under the covers' series. I go into what makes a song great after playing some as acoustic covers. You can use this to learn how to play Coffee and tv by blur or treat it as a song breakdown of why these chords work and what the song means to me.

Beautiful guitar mate! Awesome video too. Very detailed and helpful, I was wondering why it sounded strange. You've earned a sub!

I'm not a musician at all, but this was a really incisive breakdown for me. It's great how you didnt know the story of the song, but seem to comply get it. Great work.

Very interesting to hear the theory behind this song, or how it doesn't follow theory. I wonder how much of that was intentional and how much was just using chords they thought fitted? From what your saying about how the lyrics fit the chords I guess intentional. Really liked your interpretation of the song too. I've always thought Graham Coxon is a great guitarist - love some of the riffs he came up with.

Yeah I know what you mean, it could be a product of following the ear type thing. This is just my interpretation though, someone else may have an entirely different view on it

What you’re playing is actually closer to what Damon Albarn plays rather than Graham Coxon. The voicings in the verses aren’t quite right and in the chorus graham plays two different descending licks before returning to (from memory) Cmin and then C#maj

Fair, but he's playing an acoustic like Damon. I'm very inexpirienced but anything written for electric I find impossible to get the same sound of

@@sendersnivy6698 yeah but what I’m talking about isn’t how it sounds, it’s what he’s actually playing - I’m just watching his hand, not going off how it sounds. Although, this song would be fine to play on acoustic anyway. There are no intricate lead lines that can be difficult to play on acoustic - apart from the heavily distorted solo of course.

I'd expect another blur fan to leave a comment explaining, but 13 (album) was a work of blood sweat and tears. Damon had recently had a breakup, and the song is written about Grahams alcoholism and how he would have Coffee and watch TV while writing music, and even sung by him which few songs are. Graham left the group for several years following this. I find it interesting you misremembered the lyric "Care who you are" because I imagine in his position that's the only thing people cared about, nothing else. P.S You aren't the only person who's tried to sing a guitar solo

I'd have to rewatch the video to get the solo reference but thanks for the insight. I was hoping someone who knew more about the background of the song would leave a comment. Theres plenty of them lol

The verse is playing with an extended concept of the B key (with bvii, b VI, bV (the beautiful Fmaj7#11),.... As for the last chord of the second verse (A) it seems to be a IV/IV, that is, the forth grade to E major, but it resolves to its relative minor in the chorus (C#). Nothing really weird, thus. The chorus is a nice C# minor progression with the only "unusual" insertion of a bII (a beautiful Phrygian D).

Good evening, mate. I think the song is not as complicated nor as weird as it seems. There's only a main modulation between two neighbour keys, only a sharp note apart: verse is in the key of B major, and chorus is in the key of C# minor. They share all triads but one, although obviously there will be some modal differences when the chords are extended. The glue between the two keys is, as you identified, E Major (4th grade of B and major relative of C# minor). Keeping this in mind, I would prefer using the enarmonic A# and C# to describe the analysis, instead of Bb and Db respectively.

it’s actually both, it’s an Aadd(#9) chord. It has both a C and C# note in it. I’d watch David Bennett Piano’s video on Coffee & TV for a more in depth analysis, it’s a really good watch.
