I feel compelled to comment on this video and offer a bit of perspective/critique on this as a therapist. Most good therapists will tell you that CBT or CT are good tools to have in your toolkit, but they’re not always the tool you should be using for everything. CBT likes to portray itself as the be all end all, one stop shop, but it’s really not. It’s a set of techniques that have some strengths and some flaws, and works in some instances and not in others. I definitely recommend trying it out but I think that framing is really important. It often gets portrayed as the “one true secret” to mental health but I don’t think it’s always applicable and there are a lot of other important and useful tools and perspectives. There are also some critiques of it that I think deserve to be taken seriously.

Thank you for this comment, hope many people read it. CBT has a lot of limitations, and it definitely isn't the highest form of psychotherapy. I personally find it very harmful when people with little knowledge of what psychotherapy is and should be talk about therapy methods and their supposed efficiency. Which, sadly, is the case of this video.

@@marziafanBut professionals often have the same kind of opinion, each one defending their favorite aproach as the ultimate therapy.

Look I want to believe this modality of treatment is true, and I've been in therapy since I was 14 and diagnosed with High risk leukemia at age 12, and still till this day in therapy, and today I am making the choice to withdraw from all services, although I have been met with backlash, I struggle with the idea that permanent damage from this illness, can be treated repeatedly with CBT and expected to just resolve itself over time, yes it has done wonders for making me a better person, but never a better worker, nor has CBT eliminated them. I HAVE NO MORE SOLUTIONS DESPITE SUCH. WANT TRUTH, a person impacted by such chemicals being pumped into the brain and spinal fluid. - will not recover, I'm not just saying that, look at the medical documents Who knows maybe I'm just an idiot anyways.

Try IFS Internal Family Systems. CBT can be very mechanistic and almost oppressive towards your actual needs when used as the only tool. IFS is much more humane. So of course many CBT ideas are still useful too.

Hey Scott, what do you think about ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)? I have found both ACT and CBT to be helpful. I personally don't think it has to be one or the other, but I was curious to hear your thoughts on ACT as I was listening to you speak about CBT. I first discovered your work because of your year without English mission. Thank you for all you do.

Thank you Scott for making this video. Psychological distress affects many people across the globe. And CBT is definitely a shot in the arm to curb this distress. I hope many social-media influencers/vloggers make CBT spread to wider audience.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:52 🧠 *Cognitive therapy emerged from Aaron Beck's critique of Freudian psychoanalysis, leading to the development of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which has become a gold standard for treating various psychological conditions.* 01:18 💭 *CBT posits that distorted thinking patterns contribute to psychological distress and dysfunctional behaviors, with beliefs influencing interpretations of situations, leading to automatic thoughts, emotions, and actions.* 04:32 🔄 *Action plans and behavioral experiments play a crucial role in CBT, allowing individuals to challenge and modify their beliefs and behaviors, especially important for combating depression and anxiety.* 06:37 📊 *The effectiveness of CBT stems from both belief change and behavior change, with ongoing debate about the relative importance of each component in contributing to therapeutic outcomes.* 08:55 🛠️ *While formal CBT is conducted in therapy settings, understanding the principles of CBT can aid self-improvement efforts, although self-administered CBT lacks the evidence base of therapist-conducted CBT.* Made with HARPA AI
