Yeah I haven’t heard the full details but it sounds like traffic was stopped because of a previous accident and Scheffler was trying to pull around the traffic in the shoulder, which everyone knows you’re not supposed to do. Also not sure what did he for the assaulting an officer charge but that’s pretty serious. And he was charged with reckless driving which is a harsher charge than careless driving. Careless driving would be the equivalent of manslaughter whereas reckless driving would be the equivalent of first degree murder, it’s a reckless endangerment of people and/or property while driving. Scheffler’s statement made it sound like he was just trying to pull around the shoulder but these charges are way more serious than that.

Reckless driving means a willful disregard of the safety of people or property, it won’t matter if his intent was to get to the golf course on time, and the assaulting an officer charge could only be defended if his intent was to act in self defense, which is hard to claim against a police officer and certainly very difficult to claim self defense when you’re driving a car.

At events they are told to drive around barricades (the courtesy cars are marked). At that time of the morning, the police being around the entrance would have looked very normal to Scheffler and he did what he thought he was supposed to do. Its a case of confusion and not a willful disregard of instructions.
