Topps Dynasty - Expensive Trash Or Topps' Best Set?

Please do not think I am encouraging opening Topps Dynasty. I would HIGHLY recommend not doing so unless you are okay with losing money. I would recommend buying the singles you care about on the secondary market since most vets and rookies go for less than the cost of a box. The high end rookies, 1/1s of certain players, and cool patches of some players may be going for more than the price of a box, but you at least know what you are getting for the price. So same as every other product except Topps now. Topps now you know if you gamble, you will get 100ct same card depending on player (demand/PR actually represents demand !)and maybe hit a MLB authentic holo player game specific patch or an auto or 1 of 3 parallel #’d to 99 or less. Yall should be demanding better quality and design for Topps now, not hating on it. Make it better, it’s already better than half of the $500 a box releases😂.

I own 4 currently, and they are some of my favorite cards, but I can absolutely not fault someone for preferring bowman chrome or topps chrome. In an ideal world we can have one of each set 😅. I personally still prefer Bowman Chrome 1st over Dynasty in 99% of cases. I do prefer Dynasty over Topps Chrome at this point. Thanks for watching and the comment!

Because of your noted issue with all of the image variations, I personally love the Topps Reverence Patch/Auto. They only have the one card (per set, since it seems some rookies are in multiple sets), one image and numbered to 10 or less. The patches are game used, but are just a bit smaller. Am I biased? Yes, I have Jackson Chourio's Reverence RPA sitting on my desk right now. Regardless, Reverence goes for much less than Dynasty and I will be priced out of the Dynasty RPAs.

Great analysis Scott, I think you covered most of my concerns/observations about Dynasty. I do have one overriding concern though…I think this product, overall, is just too rare to be considered a hobby mainstay/standard the way Bowman 1st colored refractors are. If they are just unobtainable for the masses, I don’t know if they gain that level of relevance.

A fun math perception question…. So if a star has 9 variants and print runs to 10,5 & 1, that gives you 144 cards total in the traditional horizontal space. Would it be better if they had 1 image, still had around a 140-150 print run, but started the ‘common’ level from a higher ‘out of’ number ? So for example, numbered to 60, 40, 25, 10, 5 and 1 ? You’d have a total print run of 141 in this permutation, but would the market go for a Dynasty RPA now numbered out of 60 ? Or 6 tiers of print runs per card (compared to the current three with the 10-5-1 approach) ?

IMO these are the 2nd best RPA to get. Only RPA I believe is better is the Debut RPA if a given player. Love these cards especially the vertical designs

I love Topps Dynasty. Would love to have a Harper or Bobby Witt Jr., but you are correct. This set should only be for elite players, top rookies and hall of famers.

I agree! I am not a huge wax opener so I probably am not the right person to ask, but I think we could reduce 40-50% of the set and it wouldn't be a huge deal. Only issue is that it would make the remaining wax so expensive for the average collector.

Good vid breaking down Adley, I just find it confusing with multiple cards of the same person in one year. I think I'd prefer them keeping one fantastic game image and going /1, /5, /10, /25, /50, /99. Or perhaps doing a different image specifically for each of those "out ofs" to make them easier to identify. But not multiple images for multiple /1, /5, /10. Also not a fan of the patch swapping that has happened and been called out, that makes me nervous on these. I think I'll get a few nice looking ones of PC players I love like Ortiz and Posey like you did for Larry Walker, which looks amazing. But not sure I'm going to invest for Witt / Gunnar types, will stick to Chrome parallels and autos for those.

@@scottiebcards2354 To be clear, I have never heard of a specific Dynasty patch swap, and perhaps because they are monitored by the community so much, it would be tough. But patch swapping in other products has happened so, it’s concerning. The price differences on nicer patches can be quite significant.

I wouldn’t say Dynasty is necessarily overrated or garbage in any way. With the high price point for boxes and singles it is for sure a specialized and small segment for the baseball card market. If you collect these cards and have them as featured showcase piece of your collection that’s great! Personally, I won’t be in on these however can see the appeal. For 1st Bowman, rookie RPA, SP, SSP, image variation and base, I think there is room for all of it. Yes, there are volumes that can water the hobby down but with that same thought, there is something for everybody.

You will get these when you buy a box, you can buy 1000 boxes and not get a debut patch.

Buying singles is always best if there is something specific you are looking for. Sometimes the thrill of a cheap buy-in for a BiG HiT is too enticing. Topps Dynasty is always really optically pleasing, the cards are legit, clean, sharp.... classy cards. I feel like Topps Definitive is a cheaper version of Dynasty, but with way more "junk" compared to Dynasty. I really like Definitive though. I feel like Topps Chrome & Topps Dynasty and maybe even Definitive are the sets I prefer. All the things you like, I like.... all the things you don't like, I don't like as well. I don't like the multiple 1/1s of a player, that is a hustle for sure. I was unaware of the CT scan ish... that's wild. Sooooo many Rutschman's! smh. I like the hologram on the card. Dynasty is king of RPA's. Truth. What's your BEEF with Transcendent? Price for what you get?? Dynasty are much better looking cards really. Great breakdown. Topps Dynasty always sells. My only critique is that they should make the 1/1's gold vinyl to have uniformity among their other products. Unless you look at the serial number, most of the cards look the same because even the /10 cards have crazy patches. Great set, just too expensive for most of the hobby unless you funnel money to breakers who god knows what they do behind the scenes

Beyond the low numbers of Dynasty it’s hard to figure out the difference between them and what card to target. They all look the same, even different years blend together. That said, I do like them.

For a set to be worth a ridiculous price tag, the product has to be mostly hits and very different from other products. If a card is going to be a signed relic, it should be from a significant game in that players career. This set checks those boxes. However, this is likely seen as a pure investment or personal collection set where people with a lot of extra money could chase a player with little chances of disappointment. Considering it's just 1 card a lot of people may be scared to take the chance at it and like you said with people now being able to scan the box, we may see a lot of stories of people buying from stores and getting hosed. I can see these being used as an end piece to a break in today's card market because it would add that extra lottery aspect to having someone dropping 200$ for just the Reds in hopes of hitting an Elly patch on top of whatever else in the break.

It is a good question. The main reasons are: -Other Sports like F1 and Soccer also have Dynasty which helps the value -Best design year in and year out -Largest collector base of the set -Every card is numbered to /10 or less -Every card is a game worn patch (not just relic) and an on card auto -The hobby has been prefering them over every other premium patch auto just like Topps Chrome rose above other chromium counterparts like Finest. I am sure there are other reasons I am not stating, but those are the main ones.

I will always stick to Topps flagship and Topps chrome low numbered for my PC players. When players sign thousands of cards a season, I don’t see the reason to spend big money on them. Manufactured rarity.

If transcendent, five star, etc are on card autos with great patches, I like them just as well as dynasty. I’m going for wow factor and eye appeal in my 2016 cubs collection. I don’t care about rookie cards (especially in non cub uniforms). What I want is really nice patch autos in cubs uniforms. These sets all help me build this collection. If only Jake Arrieta wasn’t an ass and signed his dynasty cards, I would have most of the key players. Odds are small they’ll ever produce a Dexter Fowler, Kyle Hendrix, or David Ross Dynasty or five star, and if they did the masses would be disgusted. I’d be on cloud nine! 😂

2023 WBC dynasty was a massive fail in my opinion. They 100% made the set before the tournament even happened. If I remember correctly there were multiple Dominican guys who played like crap and didn't even make it past pool play, which they didn't even have to play Japan or USA... Then they didn't even include Randy Arozarena, who literally got citizenship just to play, then played exactly like he does in the postseason leading Mexico to bracket play whilst having a better tournament than basically everyone who was in the product. If they're going to capitalize on specific game used items, they HAVE to make it relevant, like you said not many care about a Buxton or Bregman one unless they did something big, like maybe a 2017 Bregman one would have been kinda cool back then, but my biggest issue is a premium product must have premium players and relevant things in the product, or else it's a fail in my books

Definitely expensive trash. On some of the earlier Dynasty cards, the auto is either streaky or bleeding into the card. You don't know how these will keep as the surface of the cards is different each year. In terms of the Patches and such, you truly don't know where they came from. Could be an All-Star Game or just spring training games. I only want regular season game patches, I don't know about you guys. They should put the holograms on the game used relics that they use in Tribute and used to use for Definitive. For 1k plus for a Dynasty box that is inexcusable

I love the look, style, and everything about Dynasty…but 95% of those boxes are financial losers and many severely so. Definite great singles product, but they priced out the benefit of opening box. And to your point the checklist isn’t exclusive enough for a four digit, one card product

Mostly. I spent the most I ever did on a card for a Jon Lester dynasty card. $350. And I was thrilled to do so because it’s by far his best Cubs auto card. He’s only got a handful of cubs on card autos (which I collect for 2016) and the dynasty is awesome. Would I ever open a box? Big no! But the cards nobody wants to open are exactly what I want to collect. Case in point cubs Jason Heyward and Addison Russel. Cringeworthy busts if you’re ripping product, but both my holy grails for those players for my collection.

Hmm.. Out of curiosity, why do you think they are not game worn? They state that they are game worn on each card. Panini says "player worn" or "not from any specific player" while Topps is labeling these all "game worn memorabilia" on the card. If you are referencing to the back that says "not from any specific game, event, or season", my gues is Topps only states that because they make hundreds of thousands of game worn relic cards every year and they do not want to have to label where every card came from and track each card. They also most likely do this as legal copy that was approved to be put on every card to save money (copywriting can get very expensive if you need to do it for every card). I will also note, while I like Dynasty, and other people on Spitballin' like Dynasty, these cards have been going for huge money prior to us discussing them, and I would guess that the odds of us having a meaningful impact on values is low. With that being said, I definitely get if patch autos are not everyone's cup of tea in the baseball world. To some it may feel more like basketball and football territory.

@ Topps will state on the front of the card if the relic is player worn or game worn. The actual verbiage on the back also changes depending on if it is game worn or player worn. If game worn (as stated on the front) it will say “the relic contained in this card is not from any specific game, event, or season”. On the player worn cards it will say “player worn” on the front and say “the relic in this card was worn by the featured player” on the back. Yes, this is the major issue. At $375 this product is a fun rip with not too much downside. At $900 there is almost zero upside.
