Scottish Clans: The story behind Clan Gordon

EVERY weekend, Carl MacDougall, will tell the story of one of Scotland's famous Clans. This weekend, we take a look at the Gordon Clan.
The Gordons are thought to have come from France and settled in Berwickshire in the 11th century.
Malcolm Canmore gave the lands around what is now the village of Gordon to Adam Gordon, who, with the help of other French, Norman and English knights defeated MacBeth at Lumphanan, near Aboyne in Aberdeenshire in 1057.
This is where MacBeth was killed and buried before being reinterred in Iona.

I'm a proud descendant of the Clan Gordon. I am of the third generation born in Canada after my family migrated to Canada. My Mothers maiden name is Gordon and were a family, very proud of our heritage

We also live in Australia. Samuel Gordon that came by ship from Scotland with his clan pillaged small villages and was chased out of the country leaving to Holland and raiding all the gold and silver from Catholic churches. They then came back with more wealth than anyone had seen over here and paid for all the land they could see with melted down gold. The land is still in our family today and called Gordon country in Qld. There is a verey detailed book in the family of all the bloodline and a verey detailed record of history.

Likewise. My grandmother’s mother was a Gordon. The family went from Scotland to Ulster and eventually to Canada, settling first in Ontario and ultimately in British Columbia. Very proud of my Gordon connection.

Love hearing these stories! My maiden name is Gordon and almost all my roots are Scottish. It's hard to get correct information beyond my 4th great grandfather on the Gordon branch. I did see a document where he listed the last Duke as his father but history shows that would be incorrect. Anyway, still fun to hear the history!

I’m diving into my family history and I recently found out one of my ancestors was from the Gordon clan. I don’t know how much I’m blood related, because she married a relative of my great great great grandfather, but either way it was recorded in an old family photo album and it’s awesome to finally learn more about my ancestry

I can trace my line back as far as Montreal in 1825 to my great great great grandfather Thomas Gordon. We were told our family were ship builders in Aberdeenshire. My great great grandfather founded the gordon canoe company in Lakefield Ontario which later became the Lakefield Canoe company

Hey mate. I have a verey detailed book on our bloodline and history full of hand written notes and letters going right back to the fight war of independence. Samuel Gordon came to Australia with his clan and pillaged small villages only to flea from Australia. He then went to Holland and raided all the gold and silver from Catholic churches, then came back to Australia buying more land than anyone had owned. This land is still here today in the family and is called Gordon country.

I'm descended from both the Stewart's and Gordon's. My grandmother was a Huntley. She had Stewart's on one side of her family and Gordon's on the other. My ancestor was one of a handful of noble exiles sent to the Netherlands and later on to Barbados.

I was disappointed you didn't talk about the last Duke of Gordon and his shenanigans. My husband is a descendant of one of his children born on the 'wrong side of the blanket'. I know he had two other children who were also illegitimate. As he had no legitimate heirs the title passed to the Duke of Richmond who is now known as the Duke of Richmond and Gordon.

I'm an Atkinson, a sept of Gordan. My Dads maternal grandmother's maiden name was Gordan. I always use to think they were of English decent but when my dad and his sister both did a DNA lineage test it was 84% Scotland, Ireland, England with Scotland being the dominant. 10% Scandinavian (Norway,Sweden) 6% Russian. Quite interesting. I'm like ahh Rowan Atkinson is English I guess where the same, def not. Proud to learn of my strong Scot ancestry.
