@Miss_Ink_Addict 5 ай бұрын
@johnconner3901 The four native languages of Scotland are English, Scots, Gaelic and Doric. All recognised and registered languages. You can confirm this with UNESCO. And of course there is technically 5 if you include British Sign Language. This isn't to negate the non-native languages of Scotland as we have many of those. There's approximately 150 languages used in Scotland.

So about 6 months ago when i started learning Scots Gaelic, i watched this video and was blown away by the language as one descended from ClannRanald, evading persecution for being jacobites my ancestors darted across the world and assimilated well into rural New Zealand with a mix of irish, welsh, manx and other sorts. Now 6 months later watching this video i'm blown away with how much i understand without needing the subtitles and also understanding why you used this word or that word. Thanks for the inspiration! i hope to watch this in another six months and compare how much more i'll know. Try the different programs. A couple have been mentioned already in the comments, and Duolingo is another one. Its important to find which one suits you best. Remember that 80% of learning a language is mindless repetition, so finding a program that helps you to speak a few phrases each day will really help you. Don't give up! That's especially true of Scottish Gaelic where the pronunciation works in a different way to what we are used to.

As an American whose now spent just over a year dedicatedly trying to learn Gaelic via daily apps and whatever scarce books I can get my hands on at Highland Games/Celtic Diaspora shops, I've been very anxious about whether all of my efforts have been for nothing in all my time spent learning the language when I have very little chance to practice it with another Gaelic-speaker. Though I have one or two friends also learning it, their lives unfortunately haven't allowed them time to dedicate anywhere near as much time to it and they've not been able to advance beyond the very basics). Just finding this video and listening to it without looking at the screen/subtitles and being able to effectively comprehend at least 90-95% of your conversation renewed my spirits that what I'm studying is actually taking root and that the time and money I've invested in my informal studies haven't been totally for naught. Thank you so much for making this video!

Growing up in West Virginia, the similarities to the enunciation of Gaelic and Appalachian English are very similar, guess that’s not surprising as it was the Scottish who settled in the Appalachian mountains and influenced the language.

Is there any connection or did a connection arise between Anglo-Saxon and Gaelic. Also, I suppose it varied between places. Where, and in what countries was Gaelic spoken....I can guess Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall?, Wales (these two are quite different from the others?), and Breton (I suppose it was Bretony....According to the book 'Sapiens' mostly these nationalisms etc are all disappearing. An example is India where tea drinking and much else that is admired was introduced by the British (included Scots after the Union in 1707). Does nationalism have a place? If we survive, are we looking at a One World with...how many languages. And indeed, the universal thing is .... well there are many .... but we know about money, and then we have English, Spanish, Chinese...perhaps Hindi... perhaps we need to preserve so to speak these other languages as the very ubiquity of the other way is tedious at best and possibly terrifying at worst? Any thoughts anyone? .....I don't know...have no idea...But back to the top....the connection to Gaelic, it has to connect with something....although Chinese etc...well we can see they kind of evolved....why do people chose one word and not another for a thing? Wittgensteinian question that one...Probably unanswerable...
