personally I prefer over the left shoulder for protection reasons. The slash from the left shoulder to the right flank is the most common melee injury. Wool is excellent protection against cutting blows, as the edge of the weapon slides over it.

I honestly never knew Kilts were this badass. What an insanely efficient piece of attire. I think I've heard that they wouldn't wear any underwear underneath one, I think that might be a bit drafty for my tastes but other than that this thing is awesome.

I haven't tried it yet. But the folds in the back traps a lot of heat. Not sure I would go bare during a Swedish winter.

As a serial kilter who goes regimental sometimes. The draft is pretty welcoming. You are correct the pleats trap alot of heat. Plus if you want a warmer garment. You just have a longer piece of tartan. Which allows you to add more pleats or deeper pleats.

They're plenty warrm, thats what the pleats are for. The no underwear comes from a 1700s military tradition, it's more to carry and trekking through mud wrecks long johns. Underwear is worn circumstance dependant, such as competing in a sport. Tossing a caber, or a hammer, would expose more than the viewers were bargaining for.

Trews were sometimes worn underneath the plaid if it was really cold. However, Highland mercenaries in the 17th century were well known for their ability to withstand colder weather due to their great kilts/plaids.

I recently read about Scottish Mercenaries in the Swedish Armies during the 30years war. Wonder if they would have worn the great kilt then.

Several of these mercenaries become high ranking officers and also became part of the aristocracy, this is why the Scottish clans of Hamilton and Douglas have Swedish branches

There is a drawing of Highland mercenaries in Germany from the 1600s I am aware of, 30 years war is unknown. What is known is that the established scottish military units in foreign service recruited almost exclusively from the Lowlands, so they wouldn't have been wearing the Feileidh Mòr

Etsy will run you £100-£160 for cheaper acrylic wool or you can get real wool from the mills for about £400-£500 It costs just about the same as getting a regular kilt made up of

Fairly nice tutorial. Might I suggest getting a linen shirt and one that's a bit longer. Should go right to the middle of your knee or just above. Also your bonnet is crooked. They didn't have it locked to the side. They had it flat on top.

Nah, the great plaid was VERY practical for the Highland Scots. It’s a tent, bedroll and garment all in one, made of thick, warm, waterproof wool. It can be worn in many, many different ways.

Say that to a Highlander with a broadsword…. also, ironically Scots wore trousers before the English did. At the time, English wore breeches and stockings, while many Scots wore “trews” which more resemble modern trousers.
