Charles de Gaulle wrote to Lyndon B. @Tyler Lopes you know the France that aided The United States doesn’t exist anymore? That France died at the hands of revolutionaries and the likes of Napoleon Bonaparte. Comparing 20th century France with 18th century France is problematic at best. They are truly two very different things. In any case, the comparatively small (but important) contribution made by France during the American war of independence was more than payed back with extremely high interest during two World Wars.

My grandfather was a Marine field medic for the Republic of South Vietnam. He’s never talked once about the war. Most of his brothers died in the war and the first time I ever saw a male in my family cry is when we returned to Vietnam and we visited our family cemetery over 30 years later. He was stone cold but he put his hand on his little brothers grave and immediately unleashed all the pain he’d been holding for all those years.

All right, I'm crying like a baby. As a Iraqi Vet, having seen my share of terror, misery, terror and injury; my experiences pale by comparison to the WW2 Vets (US and Commonwealth). They are a national. treasure, those few that remain. Working in the VA (US) (Veterans Affairs) Hospital, I am almost intimidated when I see them. I pay my greatest respects nonetheless. They are without exception, the most, kind men and women I will ever met. And to top it off, my neighbor is a WW2 Marine Vet from Iwo Jima! At 95 he tends his garden and via shared back fence, drops branches/leaves to my goats (I have a small farm). I meet him at the fence and spend hours listening to him talk. Although its repetitive, I love every minute! I believe the generations before us were much tougher then we are. God Bless.

As he advanced along the road with his company he was called upon to treat a wounded American soldier. While treating the wounded soldier he was shot and killed by a German sniper. His death devastated his family and his mother really never recovered. He was planning to become a medical doctor when the war was over. His body was moved from Normandy to his hometown in Williamsville, New York, now buried alongside his parents. We consider him a true hero and every June 6th our thoughts turn to Edwin and what his life could have been.

My former father-in law fought in ww2. It wasn't til his later years did he speak of his horrific experiences during the war. He was Navy man, and they were attacked by kamakis. But they prevailed. The shot down those planes like fish in barrel, though many of his friends died during those attacks. I miss him greatly.. to comment on your statement about sportsmen and celebrities, they mean nothing.. these soldiers have given their lives and sacrificed everything for freedom. These men are our heroes!

It warms my heart to see these young men being treated like celebrities, having a party thrown in their honor and being honored for what they did for the world. It is my understanding that if the locals in Normandy receive word that a soldier who landed on the beaches comes for a visit they honor him with a welcoming reception and have the local school children come out to welcome them, which is how it should be. I can personally attest to the fact that the French take excellent care of our fallen heroes. The cemetery overlooking Omaha beach is immaculate and regarded as hallowed ground.

One if my uncles "rode" a parachute into France on June 6 '44, many were shot on their way down then left for dead. Medics didn't reach them until the next day. My uncle many years later finally talked about it. He said it was the longest night of his life, laying there among the dead and dying, hoping his injuries weren't fatal. I still can't see a Purple Heart without thinking of him and the others who were with him.

My grandfather and several cousins (Many I never got to meet) fought in WW II. One family which is a third cousin had three brothers that were part of the D-Day operations that never came home. No one in the family knew just where these brothers were other than they landed at three different locations on the beaches of Normandy. Bless these survivors and may they know that many of us will never forget what they did.

My father was in the South Pacific with the Army in New Guinea and the Philipines. He was part of a recon unit that was the first back into Bataan. His division was known as The Avengers of Bataan. He never talked a whole lot to me about it, but I have the official typed after-action reports of the campaign. One thing stands out. At the end of each day is a notation that simply said "No prisoners". Given what the Japanese had done there, that speaks for itself. He died just shy of his 100th birthday and we believe that he was the last surviving member of his unit. Towards the end, he talked more about it with our son and grandson. My father-in-law was with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific. In the last few months of his life, he relived the war in his mind all the time.

I'm from a big family and I have SIX uncles who served in WWII. One of them was a paratrooper with 53 successful jumps...54 didn't go so well and he was a POW in a German stalag for quite a while. He escaped twice, recaptured twice, both times at the Swiss border. They didn't like him very much. LOL My uncles, like most of that generation were fierce, courageous, and brave. I want to thank you for showing clips like these and your heartfelt reactions. I've only recently found you on YT and I've subscribed. I want to thank you for being an encouragement to Americans today...were find ourselves often not so popular, it would seem. I love that you still have respect for us and, what seems to me, a genuine high regard. Thank you. You've touched my heart just showing me some our legacy.

I would love to see " Professional athletes " geared up like our troops in Afghanistan and run through a week of mountain warfare school. No special treatment. Put the opfor out in the boonies to play with them so they don't get lonely. 24 x 7. Doubt they would get through day one.

Tears are flowing again. My heart is overflowing. My Daddy fought in WWII. He was 88 when he passed away in 2012 of cancer. He never spoke of his medals or what he did in the Aleutian Islands. It was just doing his duty as an American young man to fight for his country. God bless these precious soldiers. I miss President Trump. He cared for our veterans and respected our soldiers.

I saw a video a few weeks ago about a Memorial thing the French do every year on the anniversary of D-Day. They bring sand from one of the beaches attacked that day - Omaha, I think - and rub it onto the gravestones so the carved names are visible again. There was a nice ceremony but watching those people going down the rows with their buckets of sand, using their hands to rub the damp sand into the markings and then wiping away the extra and any smudges was beautiful.

My father landed on Utah beach. He was wounded that day, and again on the hospital ship when it was hit. Neither time was bad enough to keep him from returning to march into Germany before the end. He was 18. He died in 2007 at 80. The Greatest Generation.

I just finished Eugene Sledge’s powerful novel “with the old breed” and after reading that this video makes me cry even harder than it had before I read it. It’s unimaginable what these men saw and went through. God bless the greatest generation. I will ball like a baby when the last veteran of this war dies.

I am a 300 lbs 6ft tall tattoo covered man and no matter how many times I watch this I will cry my eyes out. As a Boy Scout I had the honor to shake the hand of a World War 2 Veteran while performing the Flag Ceremony at Mount Rushmore. That is a day I will never forget. Never. The men and women who gave their lives during the war and the ones who still remain are greater than any super hero ever created. Respect doesn't begin to describe how I feel about World War 2 Veterans.

Ok had to add a second comment.... 29th Infantry... the Blue and the Gray... the guys from my town wore that patch with pride... "The Bedford Boys".... Company A of the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division.... we sent 30 young men... 19 died on D-Day, 4 more before the campaign was won. The 116th of the 29th still serves from here, still wears the Blue and Gray with pride, and still answers the call to serve. At our armory is a sign that reads "Company A still stands tall in Bedford"
