My wife and I were able to make it through this movie "ONCE". The sadness it brought us was counter balanced by observing the care and respect that is given to the fallen soldiers. It is nice to know that our son was lovingly cared for ,every step of the way, while making his final journey home from Iraq.

Mr. & Mrs. Ehrlich, Thank you for your sacrifice and your service to our country. I joined the Airforce as very young 17 year old. I understood what risks that I was accepting by joining the military. What I did not understand was just how many of my extended family were serving with me. My parents and my younger sister worried because they were unclear of what my service entailed as they had never served. My older brother enlisted in the Airforce five years earlier, so he worried because he completely understood my responsibilities. Add to this my Grandparents and my six sets of Aunts & Uncles. Each Uncle had served either in the Army, Navy, Airforce, or Marines. My brother, one first cousin, and I were the only members of our generation that joined, while my Father was the only male member of his generation of our familes that did not serve. My poor mother was charged with keeping this extended family up on my status. Each half hour call home meant her spending hours updating our extended family. Many civilians never come to understand the sacrifice and service that family members experience. You served every hour that your son did and your sacrifice continues every hour since your son gave his life. May a gracious God watch over you and the other family members that served with your son. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

I am sorry for your loss, As a vet, I honor his and your sacrifice today. “ I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom. “ - Abraham Lincoln

I’m a composer for Film. We write everything from scratch. Generally speaking, the director will send me the film, and I have between 6-8 weeks to score the whole thing. The music is the last thing that is added to the film. I hope that answered your question. Love the channel, keep up the great work. God Bless.

I’ve heard that modern movies are screened for composers using a temporary score, usually taken from an older film, and instructed to write a variation of, or take inspiration from, the score used. This is given as one of the reasons scores have become so bland and forgettable in recent years.

@@SchlockstarJoe This is true. Temp scores are a very real thing. The issues are not with the composer. It’s the fact that we have to write music for the director and the producers (which could exceed more than 12). Needless to say it’s difficult to have your individual musical voice. We can write the most amazing, thought provoking score; but if the powers that be don’t like it. Then rewrite it. It’s a tough business.

Retired military here. This movie is very accurate. Yes, there is a process, beginning with notification of next-of kin (worst duty I ever had to do), transporting the remains to Dover AFB (where they are embalmed & dressed in proper uniform), and all the way to burial. They are escorted the whole way.

As a veteran who never served in combat (I served between Gulf War I and 9/11), I can absolutely understand the outlook from Kevin Bacon's character in this film. I rarely ever identify myself as a veteran. It's not that I'm embarrassed or anything, I just don't feel like I'm on the same playing field as the men and women that went to the front lines. There were several moments here when people were trying to convince Bacon's Lt. Col that he shouldn't feel that way, but I can assure you, that's not something a person can just set aside.

I had a really hard time with this for a while as well. The military gave me more than it asked, and was a positive time in my life. At the same time, so many of my friends came back from combat torn up and having lost people they cared about. So unless I was somewhere with someone else that knew I was a veteran, I wouldn't identify myself when asked. Thought I didn't deserve it and wanted to honor those that did. Then I was very kindly told by some close friends that did pay a heavy price that I needed to pull my head out of my ass and take pride in what I did. That I served every bit as much as they did. "You volunteer? You swear the oath? You do your job? Then pull your head out of your ass, you're one of us." So to respect and honor them, I do take pride in my service, and just wanted to pass it on to you.

I truly am touched you enjoyed that. It was a very powerful film and something so very well done and respectable. So to help with your questions 1. Yes Composers make the music based on the film mostly. 2. Yes the instructions given to him at the orientation are the factual steps they must adhere to. 3. Yes you are going to cry ( but to be honest I have seen this movie a few times and tear up each time) 4. Yes the escort has to be present and provide honors (the salute) anytime the body is put on or removed from any vehicle. 5. Kevin's characters job was to study the rates at which troops were being lost and recommending assessments for troop level increases or decreases. 6. The viewing was to verify that everything was still in order after being moved. 7. PFC means Private First Class 8. Yes his father put the medals he had earned in Vietnam on the casket 9. The red group are Veterans from "other" wars. So those would be vets from Vietnam, Korea, WW2 etc. Thank you for doing such a truly amazing job on this review and I am touched that you enjoyed this.

"Taking Chance" shows what Hollywood can do when they try. A realistic, almost subdued script along with a somber and respectful performance from Kevin Bacon. I served, many years ago, in the US Navy (1975 - 85), in the "peace time" of the Cold War, but, all of us knew that there was always the possibility of war. I cried the first time I watched this movie; cried the second time, as well, and was very close to tears just watching your sensitive reaction. I knew - on one level - about the process when the remains of the fallen arrive at Dover, but, I learned quite a bit, as well, during the movie. And, I was just as touched by it...and, by your reaction.

Love your reactions, baby girl. If you'll notice, the older veterans wearing red at the ceremony were predominantly Native Americans... (makes sense, being that the funeral is in Wyoming) In military parlance, RED stands for Remember Everyone Deployed. Not just the soldiers who have been KIA, but those still serving. Appropriately, many Native and minority groups have adopted wearing red at funerals to signify that members of their community had not always (historically) been afforded the same honors in serving or passing. Thankfully, the military now considers wearing such dress uniforms appropriate at such events.

When we deployed to Bosnia in late 2001 it was the first mobilization of the 29th Infantry Division since WWII. We had a few D-Day survivors of the 29th come for the sendoff. After 11 Sep 01, we were still at Fort Dix finishing our Pre Mobilization training, some of them came up again to see us off. We were given an auditorium and the film Saving Private Ryan and some of us watched the film with them. Several of them said it was the most accurate portrayal of the beach landing they'd ever seen. Some of them were visibly choked up when talking about it. That thanksgiving 10 if them, along with historian Steven Ambrose, came over to visit us. They spent about 90 minutes telling stories in the theatre and it was among the greatest things I've ever experienced. Bob Slaughter "hey Joe, tell them about how you met Patton." Joe Farinholt "that's a stupid story, nobody wants to hear that." It was a great story and everyone wanted to hear it. Bob Slaughter was the man primarily responsible for the WWII memorial in Bedford Virginia. Bedford became the US town that suffered the greatest losses of WWII when most of them were killed storming the beaches. Joe Farinholt only had 3 1/2 months in combat in WWII but in that short span of time he earned 4 Silver Star and either 4 or 5 Purple Heart. And he met Patton and got a real cool story to tell out of it.

Ashley, When you get to DC you have to go to Arlington National Cemetery. It is one of the most hallowed and sacred places in the US. On memorial day they place a US flag on every grave to honor the fallen. My dad served in the US Army Honor Guard at Arlington during the early part of Vietnam. He wasn't even a US citizen at the time (people never believe me when I say that, but it's true), he had no idea what the Honor Guard was and had accidentally volunteered thinking he was volunteering for extra Guard duty because it let him sleep in late and kept him being assigned KP. Those years in the Honor Guard were the best of his life, he cherished every moment and even later in life when he started declining, he would straighten straight up, move with clockwork precision to demonstrate how to march or salute and he would light up with pride when any one asked about his time in the Honor Guard. Till the day he passed, he sincerely believed that he was blessed by having the privilege of bringing his fallen brothers or sisters Home. This is the funeral for Astronaut Gus Grissom, this was the last funeral my dad participated in before being tranfered to pilot training to be a medi-vac pilot. You will see my dad at 2:17 on the front left of the formation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJyzap2Ye9hsrLM On his final visit to Arlington, my dad made a point to stop at the grave and pay his respects.

I highly recommend *"Last Flag Flying"* _(2017)._ It's basically a road movie, starring *Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne* as three Vietnam War veterans who reunite after [Carell's] son got killed in the Iraq War. [Carell] asks his old buddies to accompany him, while he's bringing his son's casket to the Arlington National Cemetery. Almost forgot: Another great movie is *"The Messenger"* _(2009)._ It's a war drama starring *Woody Harrelson and Steve Buscemi.*

As a 23.5. year Veteran 4 years in the US Air Force and 19.5 years in the US Army let me say that I just watched your reaction to watching " Taking Chance " . I watched this movie when it originally came out and then about two years later I was honored to meet Lt Colonel Mike Strobl at a VFW function , he said that Kevin Bacon nailed the part perfectly and he even chocked up watching it because it brought back so many memories . I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your reactions as they were so heartfelt please don't change and stay honest with your feelings , stay safe out there !...!...!

This movie is the only movie that causes me to stand at attention and salute the screen every time I watch it. Speaking as a Cold War era vet, without combat service, this story always hurts just a little because I always feel that my service didn't mean quite as much as Chance Phelps. I also happened to be at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport the day Chance passed through. The jet parking ramp nearly came to a stand still. Even taxiing planes stopped while they moved his casket. I recently had a conversation with a nephew who is struggling with what his service means, and what makes the US so special. I told him him that free countries all value the sacrifice of their service members, but my experience has been that the US goes beyond value. We place a level of importance on their sacrifice that is unmatched - even when those who died will not be seen. We make certain that their pride in their service carries forward into their graves. To do any less means that we didn't care for them the ways that they cared for us in their last moments. I told him that not all wars are equal, but all service members are. I asked him to watch this movie as an exercise into understanding why we see our military through such a hallowed lense. There's a scene that was filmed, bit didn't make it into the final cut. It was referenced in the book too. It ensures that the audience understands that Chance was not left alone once he reached the funeral home. Members of a Marine unit came and sat with him while Lt. Col. Strobl could go to the memorial. This movie is not just about Chance Phelps, but it is also about each of us and how we should like to be honored - through our service, sacrifice, and the witnesses that ensure we are not alone when we are most vulnerable.

recently retired Iraq vet here, this movie is very accurate. The little gifts on the flight, and the kind words are something I have experienced even though I and my unit were just returning home after a tour. I think only American airline companies do these things for servicemembers. On one flight there were a couple of escorts with their charges down below, and the pilots made announcement that they would be disembarking first. When my unit disembarked the plane our officer had us get in formation out of respect for the fallen soldiers before we entered the terminal where groups of people waving little flags were cheering our safe return. felt really uncomfortable being cheered and welcomed just minutes after standing in formation while the caskets were being unloaded down below.

I'm a European viewer, not an American, but I was deeply, deeply moved by this film as it transcends borders and touches the very essence of human courage and sacrifice. The switch to slow-motion when Kevin Bacon's character stands and salutes at each checkpoint, oblivious to the surroundings, was a beautiful touch that filled my eyes every time as it illustrates the respect deserved by those fallen in battle. My admiration for the fortitude and idealism displayed by the women and men who defend freedom where it truly counts knows no bounds.
@mjc1389
@mjc1389 Жыл бұрын
The salutes are not shown in slow motion. It’s a specific salute I believe it’s referred to as a 9 count salute. It’s intention is to show a higher level of respect than a normal salute. Another thing that the movie doesn’t really point out is that Chance is referred to as PFC through the first 2/3 of the movie and Lance Corporal towards the end. He was posthumously promoted to Lance Corporal by the USMC thus the red stripes down his legs of his dress pants. Being a USN veteran it pains me to say this but IMO there is no sharper or beautiful uniform in the US military than the Marine Dress Blues.

"Make music for this." Yes. Directors and composers work directly together to determine where music cues go, what the mood is, etc. The composer will write some material and present it to the director. A great example is John Williams and Raiders. He presented two options to Steven Spielberg for the main theme. Steven liked them both and suggested using them both. One part for the primary theme and the other for the second part. Mr. Williams ran with it and the rest is history. Editors may use a "temporary score" in the editing process. They'll piece that together from stock music or other movie scores. But the music is usually written to fit the final edited version of the movie, so it is later into post-production. But yeah, every movie has its own original score. When you hear pop songs and other familiar music themes, they are licensed and used with permission. That's a whole separate department.

@@cleekmaker00 And a unique entry is Grand Piano. The music had to be recorded BEFORE filming began. Most of the movie takes place during a classical concert and the piece being played by the pianist and orchestra has to double as the score of the film. Especially when the focus is away from the piano and backstage, etc. It's a fun little thriller a family member told me about, otherwise I'd have never heard about it.

I am a film composer, I have written the scores for 2 Horror films, Along Came the Devil 1 and 2 (super fun possesion flicks), anyway, it depends on what the director wants. As a general rule I like to write based on tone and theme, and also seeing the scene in real time, we work with the director and producers during the pre-production, production and post-production to ensure we get what they want and what works best. I like to be on set and run boom op or work in the sound department to really get a feel for the tone and scope of the movie, and write on a daily basis generally after the day on set to put together quick ideas and nail down specific wants from the director. We do have piles of music in files waiting to be used or reworked depending on what the situation calls for, but I like to write new stuff for everything and only go into the reserve files when absolutely necessary, sometimes, ya already wrote what they want, they like it, then 3 months later another producer changes their mind and you scrap it all and start over..the demands of the film makers (producers and directors) supercede all my wants..but ..I generally get my way! When it comes to using licensed music in film, it all depends on budget and outside constraints from music publishers and artists wanting the moon to use 4 seconds of their music. I hope that helps answer your question!

I wanted to share with you that I recently retired from a from Northwest/Delta Airlines. During my time with these companies, I worked as a cargo manager. I will tell you that when it came to transport of our fallen soldiers, every team that I had the opportunity to work with knew that these situations were a time to be as professional and respectful as possible. Often times, these soldiers would have close friends or relatives escorting them home. While I managed the cargo department here on the west coast, we would cease operations for the period of time it took to process soldiers remains, just so the escorts had a quiet place to breathe. I felt like this movie did a good job of trying to portray how this process works.
