As someone who is from Tennessee, Nashville is called Nashvegas exactly for the reason that you're describing.

I'm a Nashville native, and you've hit the nail on the head pretty well. We are a busy and loud city in the touristy areas. A lot of the stuff that's popped up in the last ten years is geared toward tourists. They're coming whether we like it or not, so we're going to take their money to help support our city. Day to day living is not more expensive than other similarly sized cities, IMO. But hotels drinks, restaurants and attractions that tourists would frequent are definitely higher. As a local, I'm almost never frequenting those places so they don't hit my wallet like they would a visitor. There is plenty of local culture outside of those touristy areas, but we are keeping them a secret for ourselves haha And yes our mass transit sucks. It's awful and shouldn't be relied on when visiting.

I just never eat on Broadway and maybe get one beer, since I have to drive home. I love meeting the people from all over and guide the tourists to things they might want to check out. He is right... it is getting more crowded. They will close Broadway to cars at some point. They already do it on heavy weekends.

I’m so glad I went to Nashville in the 1970’s! Is Franklin, TN still as charming as it once was? I loved it and not far Nashville. Also loved the Hermitage (Andrew Jackson’s estate).

Yes, it is a tourist trap! Not negative just truth. I'm from the south and when I go to Nashville I never go downtown but there are wonderful historic sites, plantations and the like, with real stories to tell. Thank you for being so positive about the south. We appreciate it.

I absolutely ❤ Nashville and the surrounding areas. While Broadway is super fun, there are many things to do outside of downtown. Maybe I'll see more in future vlogs, but some other ideas are: 1. The Hermitage which is the home of the 7th US President, Andrew Jackson. 2. The Civil War battlefield in Franklin, TN. 3. Hurricane Mills, TN. This is the home of the amazing singer, Loretta Lynn. It's about an hour from Nashville. You can tour her home, camp, rent a cabin, go tubing, swim, go horseback riding, ride BMX bikes, tour 5 different museums on site and enjoy a bonfire while listening to some amazing performers which, occasionally, include members of the Lynn family. The property even has its own post office. It's the definition of country and community. It's phenomenal.

Great video, Tecca and Shaun: Nashville built a reputation for being the Vegas of the South and they still have that reputation today. I tend to want to explore the mountains in the South and visit the small down hometowns of the south. We love our trucks in the Midwest and the south. During my trip to Nashville, I found it to be expensive as well.-Happy trails

I enjoy watching your videos and totally agree with your asseessments of the locations that you have visited. My wife and I recently visited Nashville and I was taken aback on how "touristy" and raucous the city has become over the last 40 years. But, the older you get the less you enjoy that sort of thing. When I worked in New Orleans I only went back into the city to take out of town vistors in to see the sites. I hope as you travel the US you occasionally pass through areas other than tourist traps to get a balanced view of the US. I'm very happy to see you guys enjoying yourselves!!

I'll tell you this, when I was a teenager and bands would come to town for concerts, those bands knew that 70% of their audience was more proficient in playing their instruments than they were. There were a lot of bands that didn't like playing Nashville because they knew Nashville is a City full of professional musicians. When I was 16 I worked for a studio recording group. They rented out studio space, and you wouldn't believe half the people that came into Nashville to record. They would stay for 2 or 3 days and then leave. And no one would know that they were even in town.

Bonjovi, Black Crows, Dave Mathews, Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones... Most of the Studio Engineers and Session Players knew just about everyone Touring in the 1990s and 2000s. The only Studio I rarely went to was called (The Farm) because it was in Brentwood/Franklin. It was a large estate and bands went there to record for weeks to get away from "outside influences". You know, Drugs.

The lack of public transportation is definitely a repeated theme throughout much of the country, with the exception of some of the more metropolitan cities. Coming from experience, even if there is public transportation, it's often not pleasant or efficient and therefore avoided by many people.

The second the weather starts getting warm, all the big city party areas start going crazy. Might be best to go there durning winter, and then go to all the interesting places outside of downtown in the warmer months when you can walk around and be more relaxed.

I am from and live in Nashville I went to school on Broadway. During winter it is not as crowded. It has changed a lot since I went downtown. I'm 62 and don't leave house much but I loved when I was able to go.

As a Tennessean, I'd say you've hit the nail on the head Shaun. I love visiting Nashville, and like you I love the historic sites (musical and otherwise). But I wouldn't want to live in Nashville for the very reasons that you talked about. I love being around people, but it's difficult for me to deal with crowds and it's harder and harder the older I get for various reasons, and there is always a crowd somewhere in downtown Nashville. You're also right about the public transport in Nashville, but that's true in most Southern cities (I personally find that Atlanta is a notable exception, but Atlanta is the New York of the South as you have figured out by now). As a person with disability who has relied on public transit to move about when I have lived in cities (I prefer the country and live in a rural area today), a lack of reliability is something you just have to get used to. When I have used public transport, I plan my trip for at least an hour in advance of the time I need to arrive somewhere, and sometimes much more than that. I can also tell you that Knoxville transit makes Nashville look like the Chicago L by comparison. You are of course absolutely right about the music and arts scene in Nashville. Whether it's local musicians or musicians have come from somewhere else, there is wonderful live music all over the place, and you can find a venue where you feel most comfortable somewhere in town. I also agree completely about Nashville food. I love good home cooking and Southern food, and Nashville is still a Southern city where you can find that in abundance… and yes, the hot fried Chicken really is that good. If you ever come back to Tennessee and you make your way over to East Tennessee, I'd love to meet you and shake your hand sometime. I enjoy learning about your travels, and America from your perspective.

For future reference almost all of the downtown Nashville hotels have a convenience store in them where you can get water. From your video, you were right by the Grand Hyatt and they have a store right off the lobby

I have friends who live outside of Nashville. They say they rarely go there anymore. I’ve never been there but they say it’s become very commercialized, full of tourists, and drunk bachelorette party goers. It has been a boom to their economy.

When you come back to Texas we have to take you to some of our Honky Tonks. My late father-in-law referred to the "new" style C&W as NashVegas. He preferred artists like Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, etc. 😊

I haven't been to Nashville since the Christmas bombing. My favorite dive bar and my favorite hostel got destroyed. I'm not sure if they've rebuilt, but I always booked a private room at Nashville downtown hostel. The dive bar was on the end of the hostel building. It was called the beer sellar

If you are looking for a future tour theme, consider tracing the Mississippi River. You can go from New Orleans to Minneapolis with stops in Memphis and St. Louis. You might even be able to do parts of the trip by boat.

When my niece's husband was stationed in Jackson, they enjoyed taking the gambling cruise on the river. There was Bingo on the bus on the way down and Bingo on the way back. She said it made them feel like old people but they really enjoyed doing it

I am a Fan Shaun. I love Nashville. My extended family live about 40 miles west of it. As a teen and in my 20's....a long time ago. I toured Nashville really for the first time... I loved the Parthenon...Fort Nash...the Tennessee State Museum....Ryman Auditorium....all the Country Music stuff....back in the DAY..I did Opryland and some of the classic country music things...Printers Alley.......but...MEMPHIS! You need to go to Memphis! The Heart of Rock and Roll...walk Beale Street.....go to Mud Island! I wish you would come to Arkansas...go to Little Rock..see the big tourist things...but then go see Hot Springs...all the Northern Lakes....just see the "countryside". Eureka Springs!....I would love to give you a tour. Peace Namaste Shaun. I lived in Metro Atlanta for eight years! Lots of great things there. GO to a Braves game! Kennesaw Mountain.....the Zoo...I hope they still have the Panda's..Go to "Little Five"....just go downtown and look at the architecture.

Have not been to Nashville since 1994 and I was there in August. It just wasn't that busy as it is today and I found it pretty genuine then. Not sure that I could find that today, many more tourist as indeed I was. The food was wonderful.

From Tennessee, near Nashville (about an hour away)... 100% the negative things you noticed are spot on. Also... they are very well known there in Nashville. Part of that is due to politics, part of it's due to Covid, part of it's due to the insane amount of growth that's hit Nashville... and all of that has happened relatively recently. You hear A LOT of people here in Tennessee that do not recognize the city anymore, even from just 5 years ago. On one hand it's exciting (for some), on the other hand it's kind of sad. But yeah, the transportation problems are very well known as well as the rising costs. The booming population isn't exactly helping either. Housing there is awful, and it use to be very dirt cheap for a decent sized city. I hate driving there these days and avoid it whenever I can.

I was born and raised in Memphis (just down the road from Nashville) but I lived in Nashville for almost 17 years and I like it. I am a singer/songwriter and I played all over Nashville. Yes the food is great, and there is a lot to see and do. But the reason I moved to North Carolina for awhile is because Nashville is almost too expensive to live in. I can remember when rents were low, and prices too. But not anymore. But everybody is friendly and I still like it there.

I too am from Kentucky, western end of the state, I have been to Nashville many times in my life, from all the way back in my childhood when we used to go to the amusement park Opryland to about 4 years ago when I had my cancer surgery at Vanderbilt. I've never really spent a long time down there (other than when I had my surgery) mostly for us it was just day trips down for shopping at the malls or going to a concert. The city is definitely interesting but there is no way I would ever drive there.

I call Nashville the Hillbilly Vegas. it's a party city, pure and simple. Wasn't always that way, but it's definitely that way now. I stayed downtown once. Never again. I didn't feel safe and it was so loud. Memphis is a better place to visit, or even Chattanooga. That's a gorgeous area with tons to do and not the crazy cluster that is Nashville. And the US just doesn't do public transportation like Europe. Ubers are expensive and sometimes hard to get. You're best just renting a car honestly. It ends up cheaper in the long run. Hope it didn't sour you too much on Tennessee as a whole. It really is a gorgeous state

We went to one place and saw The Wooten Brothers playing, and that was jaw dropping. I knew it would be, that's where Victor got all his gifts from. If ya know, you know.

I’m so sad. I live south of Nashville in Franklin and love it here. We moved from Chicago 10 years ago. Locals rarely go to Broadway. We only go in the area if we are going to a concert at a small venue (not a honky tonk)😂. Franklin is quieter, quaint, beautiful, and friendly. Our downtown is really nice and we have good restaurants. Lots of history and places to tour that discuss the civil war. Still a little pricey, public transport isn’t great, but make some friends and they will take you around. We have loved the natural areas nearby. Fall Creek Falls is an amazing waterfall - a lot to see there and you can stay in their lodge. Lots of waterfalls nearby, Natchez Trace is beautiful. We are actually in London at the moment and slowly heading up to Scotland on our trip. Hope you will return to the Nashville area (just skip Broadway).

Public transportation is pretty much non existent and everything is very expensive here! Y’all come back and get outside the city!

Orlando at night is a completely different vibe. The clubs (or whatever is left of them) and bars tend to play mostly modern music with a slight lean towards what is popular. The crowd though is mostly young business professionals just getting off work to get dinner and maybe a drink before going home. Most clubs have converted into a mix of restaurant and bar without much of a dance floor. Techno isn’t really played as frequently as the people have grown up and don’t really like it. Disney is also different at night as it’s about the higher end restaurant scene and maybe shopping if you are in the mood. Universal at night is more about restaurants now with the coconut club jazz lounge although it changes a bit depending on the holiday like the Dead coconut club during Halloween or the red and green coconut club during Christmas.

I go to Nashville yearly and more or less avoid Broadway. I go for the breweries and they are scattered all over town so you can avoid the drunken tourists for the most part. Also Franklin just south of Nashville is packed with tons of great restaurants and stuff to do, so you almost dont even have to go into the city.

I’m a native Nashvillian, and I remember Lower Broad when there were actual businesses down there, before the tacky bars and drunk bridal parties moved in. You are spot on about every observation, but there is plenty of history here, like President Andrew Jackson’s home, War btw the States sites, etc. Come back and get out of the downtown Nashville area. By the way, the father-in-law of my sister, Frank Jones, produced Johnny Cash. ❤

Sadly, Nashville is growing faster than the infrastructure can keep up. Just 10 years ago, I could get a moderately priced flight and hotel and would visit once or twice a year. Now it is way too expensive for me to go unless I can stay with a friend and get a decent flight. I also stay far away from Broadway! I'm glad you got to see it and had fun while you were there. Too many bachelor/bachelorette (stag/hen) parties for me!

Nashville is also called Smashville, coined for our pro hockey team the Predators. Also we are sports crazy, football (high school, college (Tennessee Volunteers but in Knoxville) and pro (Tennessee Titans) and most recently soccer . We are loud and proud no matter if we win or lose.

Nashville local here (from 30 min outside of Nashville).Yes public transportation is not reliable. Everybody here drives or Ubers. It is a very touristy town. I rarely go down to Broadway. I went this year for the first time in probably over 10 years and it was just way too crowded for me. I ate at one of the tourist restaurants on Broadway and was shocked when they told me they did not have unsweet tea. Growing up in the Nashville area every restaurant I’ve ever gone to in small towns or large in Tennessee have unsweet and sweet tea. Yes, sweet tea is probably more common for people to drink but it’s not unusual for locals to drink unsweet tea either. I point this out to say that everything on Broadway is geared towards tourists. Nashville, being a southern city is also known for sweet tea therefore, they only had sweet tea at this tourist restaurant. My guess is that most tourist cities do similar things. The Ryman Auditorium, Opryland hotel, Grand Ole Opry & Parthenon is a must if you’re visiting. I guess Broadway is probably unique compared to other cities but once you see it once I think you’re good. Locals nickname Nashville “Nashvegas” if that tells you anything.

They made it a tourist trap in a lot of ways, there are some genuine spots like anywhere even where I am the tourist trap is very real. Gatlinburg is a huge hot spot for all that stuff but it is less of a party city and more family oriented which is good. when you get closer to midnight or even eleven at night the town is already winding down. I love the Parthenon but the rest I can leave unless I am exploring for food. If you wanna pop into Gatlinburg then shoot me a message bout it sometime.

I'm a big fan of country music. Nashville is sort of the "mainsteam" of music. In my opinion, the best country music of today is found on streaming services and not coming from Nashville. There is a sort of renaissance of good country, bluegrass, and Americana happening because of streaming services (like KZbin).

I haven't really been to Nashville since Opryland closed it's theme park years ago. Just lost the desire to go as that was the main attraction for me. I can see fancy hotels here and i can go to pubs and honky tonks here too and ride a REAL steamboat just down the road in Louisville, KY and not a diesel boat made up to look like one. I've been to the Hermitage, The Ryman and the Parthenon so there really just isn't any draw for me there.

There is a part of Dublin, Ireland (the Temple Bar area) which can seem quite fake and which is frequented by Europeans from outside Ireland. That includes Europeans indulging in bachelor and bachelorette (Hen) parties.

Police in Nashville shut Broadway down on the weekends and they've been doing it for a couple of years now. Traffic had gotten so bad that emergency vehicles were taking too long to get to calls to rescue drunk tourists from themselves. Hint... if you get arrested in downtown Nashville for being drunk in public, police will drop the charges and let you go after eight hours. Don't contest the charges or hire a lawyer. Metro Nashville Police will help you out. If you're drunk and acting stupid they will let your friends take you back to your hotel to sleep it off. If you can't find your friends, refuse an Uber, or don't know what hotel you're staying at (which is strangely common) you will be arrested Be nice and you will be let go with no charges after sleeping it off.

Stag and Hen Dos = Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties in the States. The roles are kinda reversed too. I feel like UK Stag Dos focus on making the groom do embarrassing things for fun, while in the US, that's more common for the Bachelorette parties (Lots of penis shaped novelties involved for some reason...).

Yeah, transportation isn't the best here in the US. Stuff like bussing, trains, subway system (if they even have that jn that city), etc. Like my home state of Pennsylvania, for example. We have one of the highest gas taxes in the entire country. We're not seeing taxes be used for better transportation, or better roads, or overall infrastructure. Beyond the major cities, of course. --------------------------‐------------ It's not like the continent of Europe where the cities are closer, and work together for a better transportation system. Or the fact that the government doesn't use the taxpayer's money better.

Also, the minor league baseball team from Nashville is called the "Sounds". They just debuted a new look that fits the city! The white & blue jerseys have stripes going down the sleeves. On the players' left sleeve is a patch (with "NSH" for "Nashville") that's a guitar pick on the stripes. To make it look like someone's picking a guitar.

I would not want to live in Nashville or Vegas because they are tourist areas, and are very busy and hectic.. I would much rather go to a quiet Seashore Resort or stay at a nice resort on a Florida beach on the edge of Myrtle Beach where there is a lot to do, and there's tropical blue waters and white sands and palm trees and delicious seafood buffets.

Public transportation in the US, overall, is not at all user friendly or convenient. Some cities have it worked out, but very few. Sadly.

Well all tourist towns and tourist cities and tourist areas are going to be expensive. Get away from the tourist areas and everything is much cheaper. You really can judge the United States by going to tourist areas. There are very nice tourist areas that are much more quiet and laid-back and for older people. Maybe that's what would be better for you. That's what I like.

We have the Abe Lincoln Presidential Library here. Which is amazing! Some of the “shows” were developed by Hollywood special effects artists. Not too far from here we have New Salem. You can watch real butter being churned, see a school house from Lincoln’s era, and a lot more. We also have the Dana Thomas House, the State Capitol and Old State Capitol. Lincoln’s law firm, Lincoln’s Home, Lincoln’s Tomb and soooo much more. So if you like history, Springfield is your spot. ❤️

LOL yes, in the US, anyplace you have tourists, you are going to have the ridiculous stuff to spend money on. DO NOT buy cowboy boots on Broadway. You'll pay 2x the price. I found the Glenn Campbell museum to be another waste of money. That said, there is NO cover charge at any of the bars to get in. It's all free entertainment. Where else in the world can you get that?

I absolutely hate going to Nashville, I avoid it at all costs. Unfortunately I do have to go there now and then because of the VA hospital. I hate the traffic around Nashville. I have driven in Rome, Paris, London, LA, etc. but for me Nashville is the worst.

I am East Tennessee born and raised, Nashville is not the best representation of our beautiful state. It has gone downhill from the great place it used to be. Down town stinks, I was there a year or so ago it literally smells bad and has become a drunken mess.

Las Vegas and Nashville are nothing alike. Nashville is a party place for country bumpkins, and mostly young people who like country music and want to party and get drunk. While Vegas has a lot of luxury hotels and casinos and Grand buffets and nice restaurants with all kinds of food. There is some party atmosphere going on but it's mostly people from cities and from around the world. There are Grand hotels there are shows and celebrities. I would not even begin to compare the two.

Sir, you do not know the first thing about Nashville and I know of fewer opinions that could be more erroneous. Nashville also has Grand Hotels (Opryland Hotel, Hermitage Hotel, etc). and shows and celebrities, and has become a culinary destination all of which is attracting people from around the world.
