One thing to keep in mind about the food/portion sizes at traditional diners is that diners came about in the 1930's/40's to serve the working class Americans who needed a lot of calories for a low cost. Then they would go to their manual labor jobs and burn those calories while working.

1000% agree the best diners are the local owned and independent. Everywhere I've moved as an adult the first restaurant I look for is a local diner. You can't beat breakfast food at a great diner! And getting to know the owners and the wait staff is always a plus. Every diner I've regulared has had great owners and staffs that always go out of their way, even though they obviously don't have to. I stopped at a diner in Western Nebraska after driving for about 20 hours on the first leg from Michigan to Utah (buddy and I were going back packing). I've never been served so much food before! We knew the place would have great steak and eggs since there were cattle everywhere. And the locals and owners were super friendly and asked us about home and talked about hiking etc. We were only 19 at the time and the locals were all farmers at least 30+ years older than us. We didn't have a lot of money but we left a very generous tip, they earned it ten times over. I only wish I remembered the name of the place but it's been almost 20 years. I do remember it was right off the freeway ((I-80), near North Platte (west of it I think). Good times!

Hey Shaun, Love the road trip videos. A little clue on Diners or any restaurant. If the car park is full, it is worth stopping, and a restaurant with no one there is not a good sign. I noticed that the Black Bear Diner was kind of empty, but maybe it was the time you went. Some of the best diners can look run down and have a sign outside with "EAT HERE". Portion sizes are huge in these places. You could split an order. Also doggie bag (take-away) your leftovers. Hotel rooms usually have small fridges and microwaves and you have a meal the next day. Just pack a soft side cooler, paper plates, paper towels and plastic cutlery on your trip.

My first Scottish ancestor came over as a bondsman to New England in the early 1700's. He worked off his bond and kept working for the same man for money for several years. He saved up enough money to send back to Scotland for a relative to come over without having to be a bond servant. The two of them kept saving their money and sent back to Scotland for two more relatives, who also saved up and sent back money along with the others. Rinse and repeat until they managed to get the entire extended family along with their spouses and children over to New England. It was a *lot* of people because the Scots definition of "extended family" is much broader than for a lot of Americans.

Love that you guys are getting to visit the US. I'm from Texas, and never had a chicken fried steak from up Northwest where you folks are, but it does look good. I'd recommend trying chicken fried steak and/or chicken fried chicken in all the places you guys go, even if you have to get one to go; because in my personal experience it even can be regional. There used to be a restaurant called Home Plate Diner that served maybe the best chicken fried steak I ever ate. Oddly enough I also had a variation of the dish once while visiting Oklahoma that served a chicken fried steak that had some type of hot sauce or spice in the batter and was served with a sausage style cream gravy and a choice of either ranch or a sour cream and mayonnaise sauce (it was just a little thinner consistency than mayo or sour cream), and it went great to offset the heat of whatever hot sauce or spice this place used. Chicken fried steak really should be it's own food group, and it's an odd food that seems kinda hard to mess up for a diner/restaurant but is also one of those foods that you immediately know if you get one that is truly top tier. Sounds odd I know but you'll understand what I mean when you get one like that and have something to compare it to. I hope my countrymen are treating you guys well and are being kind to you! Great people are always welcome in the good ole USA!

There are wild blackberries in the creek outside and they will substitute that on your plate for a fruit if you ask. Portions are huge at that restaurant and when you are shoveling snow, it is needed.

Traveling through Grand Rapids MI we ate at a place called the 76th St Diner and the food was amazing with large portions also at a fair price in fact we had second meal leftovers. The place is right off the highway, is a diner, c-store, gas station and was packed. Follow the truckers! We had about a 10 minute wait for a table but then the service was great too.

There was a diner here in northern Michigan that didn’t survive the virus. They served HUGE portions at a very low price. The owner was the waitress, and she said she didn’t ever want anyone to leave hungry. We had a hamburger special that included fries for $4.98. The fries took up a whole plate and the burger was huge! Of course, we couldn’t eat it all. We took our family once (I think there was 10 of us). Grandson ordered French toast. It was 3 thick slices of bread made into French toast, and the 6 year old actually finished it! Total was $86 dollars, for 10 people! Oh, and the owner gave my grandson a homemade cookie for finishing. Wish they had survived the shutdowns.

Where is the Mason Dixon Line out West? I know back East during the colonial period it was the border between Maryland and Pennsylvania (although now many seem to think of Maryland as part of the Northeast as it is bluer than many southern states - although Virginia has been getting bluer over time - is it next to be no longer part of the South?!?!?!?)

@@chrisk5651 You're right about the MD line being the southern border of Pennsylvania. Guys that just want a good meal for a good price. If the parking lot is full of newer cars close to the big highway, keep looking for where the locals eat.

for an American diner 1. how busy is it (parking lot) [except between lunch and diner] 2. does it have eye candy out front (decorations) [looking for a no for the most part] 3. can you smell food being cooked 4. does it have a lot of patrons (sitting at tables) 5. can you see the kitchen floor (is it messy with grease)[this usually means that they are busy alot] 6. are the bathrooms clean the best food in America is easyest to find by talking to locals

Diner's are typically cheap sloppy food. The Scottish equivalent would be like a cross between your local cheap pub food and a chippy (swap a burger for pies and sausage roll). To that end, getting vegetables at a diner is like getting vegetables at a chip shop. You can (sometimes), but you're not in for the best experience.

Chicken Fried Steak (CFS) is indeed beef. If prepared correctly, the meat is soaked in brine to make it salty and to tenderize it, before dredging through a flour and egg mixture and deep fried.
@jamesdemarco71612 жыл бұрын
Just a note on the two CFS'. Obviously, whichever one you liked better is the better one... after all, taste is subjective. However, the Washington CFS had sausage gravy on it, while the Oregon CFS had country gravy. Country gravy is the traditionally correct gravy to put on a CFS. Over the last 10 - 20 years, it seems the country gravy is getting harder to find. In the states, there is another popular dish called sausage and biscuits (our biscuits, not yours). I don't know for sure, but I think restaurants are just being lazy and don't want to make both gravies so they just put the sausage gravy on the CFS. Either way, the country gravy is a lighter, more subtle flavor, while the other is a very robust, strong flavor.

Three other things.. The gravy. Fry up bulk breakfast sausage (80/20 ground pork, Sage, Marjoram, salt, pepper) and do NOT drain. Sprinkle with white flour and stir for a couple of minutes to cover the meat and cook the flour and drippings into a roux. Stir in milk (OK), Half and Half (Better), or cream (YES!) until it is the consistency you want. The steak. Use beef chuck steaks cut at 3/4" thick. Pound with a meat mallet until they beg you to stop. Dip in beaten egg. Dip in seasoned flour (flour, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, pepper), then fry in a bit of oil in a pan, turning when browned and crispy on the bottom. The hashbrowns. Peel and shred potatoes. Rinse. Parboil in boiling salted water for two minutes. Drain WELL, putting them in a towel and squeezing if necessary. Mix in a bit of onion powder if you like. Fry in a HOT frying pan or on a griddle in oil, making sure that you don't crowd them. The rinsing, parboiling, and frying in hot oil is the difference between hash browns and a gluey mess of grey shredded potatoes.

New Jersey is often referred to as the "Diner Capital of the World" due to its large number of diners. The state has approximately 525 diners, probably a little less due to covid closings, making it the most densely populated state in the US. Most diners were open 24/7, so they were the place to go after the bars close and you need some food to help absorb the fifth of southern comfort you emptied at the club.

The Black Bear dinner you went to had all the signs of a chain restaurant. Meaning - ok food, consistent across the chain, but not really good. All the kitchy decor and self branding also gave away the chain. The first dinner looked original and really fun. If you find a dinner that looks really small, it may be a true converted railroad car dinner, with some of the best food!! And I can't imagine getting grits it Oregon - it's such a southern food - not even done right here in Missouri, which is more south that we like to admit. Some of the best restaurants are the little, hole in the wall, family owned places. Some you're almost afraid to go into!

Hey Shaun, I just happened to see the thumbnail for your video at Black Bear Diner in Bend Oregon. 😂 What was really cool for me 😂is that I live in Redmond Oregon!! 😊, one of the towns in what we call the tri-cities here in Central Oregon, (Bend, Redmond, and Sisters), ALL between 15 to 23 miles from the other. As another viewer stated Black Bear Diner is a huge chain of restaurants. However, as I have discovered in my 67 years (45 of them living in Oregon) traveling the US coast to coast, EVERY Diner, Restaurant, and fast food drive-in (including those that are1of a chain) all vary in quality and taste, primarily due to the chef/cook!! Such as Black Bear. So don't be discouraged or hesitant to continue trying other options. I have eaten at a few in other locations, and they All varied in quality and taste, my favorite, ironically is in Redmond. Having said All that, if you happen to still be in Oregon, or come back this way, IF you have an opportunity and time, try to get in a visit to Sisters Oregon. It is a tourist town, but small in size, so areas place to walk around and enjoy the sights. But we Oregonian's consider it a highlight of Central Oregon. IF you choose to eat there, two places I would recommend. Sno-Cap! drive in, or for sit down dining, try the Gallery Restaurant and Bar. My nephew (Seth) works there. His brother also worked there in the late 90's early 2000's so I can safely (I hope 😜) vouch for it. Now to end this loooong comment, because I was just pleased to see someone CHOSE to travel here to Oregon. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed Crater lake!! (I hope I heard right, that that was your next destination). Another beautiful area in Oregon. If you haven't already, be sure to read up on the history of the area/Lake (or areas of Oregon). Sincerely, Cheryl (pronounced Cher-ul) a proud Oregonian 😉☺ Obviously!😅 P.S. If you EVER come back, or you extend your visit to Oregon, PLEASE consider going to see Wallowa Lake in Eastern Oregon. It is considered one of the deepest lakes, and is in a mountain range considered the Swiss Alps of Oregon (if not the US). 😅 If you read this far I hope it was at least informative. Best of wishes in your travels!!! 💚💛💜
