A Scottish guy tries whisky... American Whiskey.
I'm in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York, staying with the Look Hotel. They told me to go try some of the local distilleries, and so we ended up at the Van Brunt Stillhouse. Being Scottish in its own is a diploma on being a whisky expert, so i was very interested in what it would be like.
#whisky #whiskey #scotch #bourbon

Bourbon was born in Kentucky, specifically in Maysville, Kentucky, which was once part of Bourbon County. Barrels shipped out of Maysville marked as Bourbon Whiskey. Kentucky continues to distill the finest bourbon.

I was born in Kentucky, and as much as I hate to disagree, the fact is that as long as it distilled in the U.S. and is aged in charred oak barrels, it's considered Bourbon. We have a decent label here in Michigan, but before my fellow Kentuckians knot a noose and grab their long rifles, I still prefer a good Blue Grass state bourbon any day of the week over one distilled anywhere else.

Almost all bourbon is made in Kentucky. Like the lady said, however, legally a bourbon must be over 51% corn (mashbill) and be aged(no time minimum) in new (usually charred) oak barrels.(Scotch makes such beautiful use of used barrels that I wish more American distilleries could do it.) There are a few (very few) decent bourbons made outside if Kentucky.

The Johnnie Walker distillery is worth every dime you spend to get there. It's in the middle of nowhere and the people who work there are so, so nice. Fly from London to Caithness. The cellars are an eye-opener - casks of whiskey laid down fifty or sixty years ago for bottling on important dates in the future.

I do love my scotch, especially the Highlands stuff, as I enjoy all my whiskey, scotch, bourbon, Irish, Japanese, they all have their own thing going on and have something to offer and it's all subjective, with no variety being ''better'' than the other. What is not subjective however, is where whiskey comes from, as in where it was invented, and it wasn't Scotland, Ireland holds that particular claim to fame my friend.

I'm American and I always thought I hated whisky but then I discovered single malt scotch. Then I realised I just hate most American whiskys probably because they aren't aged long enough. However there is a local whisky here that I think is quite good called Pendleton
@brayoungful
@brayoungful 5 жыл бұрын
Scotch is aged for a VERY long time because of the cold temperatures and stable temperature range. Bourbon doesn't need to be aged as long because the temperature swings are more violent, pushing the bourbon in and out of the wood at a faster rate. King Car whiskey is a good example of this. It's a fairly renowned Scotch style whiskey in the same way that Japanese whiskey is similar to Scotch. It's aged for a much shorter time than equivalent Scotch because it's aged in Taiwan, which is tropical. That said, you can find Bourbon that is aged 20 years or more, just like scotch. You can expect to pay a similarly high price, and it will be smooth, but you might have a lot more oak taste than you're used to. Most excellent Bourbons are aged between 8 and 15 years.

So glad you like American whiskey! I don't partake, but people here in Kentucky like the Bourbon that is made in our local distilleries here. Kentucky is known for serving what are called Mint Juleps, which is Bourbon Whisky over ice with a mint sprig garnish -basically its an excuse to just drink Bourbon, but I think you might object to the crushed ice, because it looks like you like your scotch neat. However, Mint Juleps are a favorite drink around the Kentucky Derby (coming up the first Saturday in May!) The Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the Triple Crown, is a steeple chase at a horse race track, Churchill Downs. It's been called The Most Famous Two Minutes in Sports." But here in Louisville, Kentucky, the celebration lasts almost all April: funny Derby - themed events like "The great Bed Race!" The Kentucky Derby is also called the "Run for the Roses," because the winning horse is draped with a carpet of roses that is prepared by a regional grocery store called Kroger. The preparation is open to the public though roped off to separate onlookers from those laboring on this coveted blanket of beautiful rosebuds. The Derby is for male 3-year - old colts (a horse isn't full - grown till 4 years old). The Friday before the Derby runs another stakes race only for 3-year - old fillies, and it is the Oaks stakes, or just the Oaks. Their winners garland is made from lilies, and the same grocery chain puts this coveted flower blanket together. About the Oaks: so many teachers would take this day off of school or call in sick so they could attend the Oaks that the school system in our county gave in and declared that that Friday, called Oaks Day, would be a school holiday, because the school system had such a hard time getting substitute teachers county-wide that day.😊😉🐎 Fireworks, the Pegasus Parade, the Great Steamboat Race, the "Run for the Rosé", Waterfront events like concerts in the open are held to amuse many tourists and millionaires alike. We natives also attend, but most of us create our own Derby Parties and watch the stakes on TV all day. Come visit and wager from $2.00 up to as high as you dare! I'll be glad to put you up free, and I believe you'd be able to watch the bed of roses being worked on at the Kroger that is across the street from me!

@@dorothygaby7015 Meh. Woodford's fine. Maker's is fine, too, but it's overly commercialized. For me it's Knob Creek or Old Rip van Winkle. That sounds snobbier than I mean it. I rarely drink at all, but if I'm going to have bourbon, those are my go-to's.

Something to keep in mind. Corn is not the traditional grain for American Whiskey, it is just what is used mostly today. Rye is the traditional grain for whiskey, and was what was most common pre-prohibition.

I agree with you on Jack and I'm from Tennessee....I'm honestly not a big brown liqueur drinker but I do love a good Scotch, but one of my fav whiskeys, from Ireland, and I always have a bottle of it around, even though it's kinda hard to find here, Tullamore D.E.W.... love that stuff. You should try real moonshine....now that's a drink

Bourbon and Rye are exceptionally American. Bourbons being primarily from the Southeastern states and Rye primarily from the Northeast. I love the resurgence if distilling in America and worldwide. I want people to try new things, whether it be Hudson Rye from New York, Penderyn from Wales, amazing single malts coming out of Japan or blended whiskys from South Korea. Try them all, if you can. They are from the earth and crafted by locals, so they are the closest you can get to experiencing those places, without actually going there.

If you find yourself in California do try and stop by St.George Spirits, they're widely considered to be America's original 'craft' distillery, and while 2 of their 3 main whiskeys are very difficult to get your hands on, their yearly release Single Malt is always insanely well awarded and the rest of their spirits are extremely high quality

Made a challenging promise to give up traditional Tennessee whiskey,, being that any other quality whiskey is more scarse and expensive in the states, its helped me re learn moderation and to stay sober more often. And, not that its always the case, but at times one does get what they pay for as well, even with whiskey, so waiting and saving for a descent imported single malt is worth it for a slow sipped low ball after a hard year.

Try Stranahan's Colorado -- it's malted barley and kind of scotch like :) Also, Eagle Rare, is pretty commonly found and is a good representation of Rye/Bourbon whiskey. Buffalo Trace is probably one of the best large distillers in the US. If you happen to find a Sazerac Rye, dont pass it up :)

Apparently in Edinburgh/Glasgow, can't remember which, there's an annual whiskey-tasting event which i think costs around £70 to attend and be given a glass - which you can then take further by buying relatively cheap samples of some of the rarest whiskey around. It's a good opportunity for a) meeting likeminded people for some, & b), adding a really damn cool hobby to the list, officially.
