I heard this song many years ago. About 20 years ago I learned the guitar chords so I could sing it to my wife on our anniversary. I did, and I think she liked it (or maybe she just loved me - I win either way). She died 6 months ago after 47 years of marriage. So now it's one of "our songs" that I sing or listen to when I want to cry my sad/happy tears of loss and gratitude. She was like a red, red rose, only even more beautiful, and she was far better than I deserved. Fare thee well, my only love.

Truly beautiful. Music and poetry evokes such strong emotions. I was looking through the bookcase and picked out the first Christmas present I bought my darling late husband way back in 1988. Inside I had written a Burns' quote about Scotia's grandeur (my husband was a keen mountaineer and loved the Scottish mountains). Those two lines of poetry transported me back to that wonderful time. I am sure your beloved wife must have loved you deeply ( and if there is a life beyond this mortal one she still does).

I did not actually know is a ballad to be sung. I thought of it as a poem. Actually, on our first date, finding that my (future) wife was of Scottish descent, I recited the entire poem to her. Her Scottish grandmother had read it to her, and I gained big points with her. At a later point, she commented that she had "melted" when I did so.

Some of these songs must be really old, the "tunes" seem to be recycled over time and morphed into the songs. -- Burns says, "The tune of this song is in Neil Gow's first collection, and is there called Major Graham." I think I am too lazy to look up Major Graham right now though.

"A Red, Red Rose," a Scottish love song written by Robert Burns: O my Luve is like a red, red rose That’s newly sprung in June; O my Luve is like the melody That’s sweetly played in tune. As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I; And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry.
