This little lady had been limping. I was called out but the abscess had already worked it’s way up to the coronet and burst out on its own. Good chance to show you Scottish’s cattle chute!

Love the ingenuity of doing it rope and pulley style in a head gate. Nice little set of Hoof trimming equipment there. The "extended trimmers" also probably work better for cattle that are not in a crush, well handled like dairy, and might leave you with a mark to remember over regular long hoof nippers.

@EnochtheCowVet2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice, but actually it is a very good one! The disk I use is a specialized hoof trimming disk, made in Europe. the feet here are much much harder than the feet of dairy cattle, as they don’t live in slurry or walk on concrete. We don’t get much in the way of hoof problems and they are pretty easy to treat, and they recover well luckily. Thanks again!

Wouldn't a block on the medial claw work to displace her from any pain and slurry getting in the infected claw? You might want to use those hoof blades to carve out as much loose and detached horn well and to open up and lift that infected hoof up more to help relieve any pain and discomfort big mama is feeling. Salicylate powder (to help in healing and pain, apply after lido) and lidocaine 10% (apply 1st) would probably help as well to assist in the pain relief, along with a loose wrapping as well. I learned this watching The Hoof GP; he's a great hoof trimmer. I'm in no way trying to tell you what to do, but I just wanted to show you another technique used from a professional hoof trimmer I watch and tell you what he does for absesses. Love ya, D

@EnochtheCowVet2 жыл бұрын
The pathophysiology of the hoof abscesses we get here on good dry ground are very different than the hoof issues Graeme deals with daily on cows living on concrete and walking through slurry. This cow will be just fine. I use blocks when they are needed (when the affected claw needs extended time to heal). This cow was fine the next day. A block is uncomfortable, but when necessary I use them. I certainly wouldn’t put one on a case like this, nor would most vets or professional hoof trimmers. Cheers!

Dude, why don't you own the things that lock the cow in and lifts the off fhe ground. This is ASKING for then fo break their leg! LOOK HOW INTENSE THAT POSITION IS IN!! That's the equivalent of putting your knees in the ground while doing the butterfly stretch. The one where you sit on the ground, you put your the soles of your feet together and put your knees as close as possible to the ground and put your head to your feet bending forward... That's what this leg is doung... Why are you so rough with them?!? you did nothing but use the most painfuk methods and didn't remove all of of the loose horn. I can tell because you cant do it that fast. Why are you always like this to the cows? Its awful
@EnochtheCowVet22 күн бұрын
Howdy Mate, those calf tipping cradles are employed by professional hoof trimmers which service dairies where they treat large numbers of dairy cows which spend their entire lives walking in slurry (liquid feces and mud). I provide veterinary services to tens of thousands of beef cows living in grass. I was taught this method as part of my 9 years of veterinary training. I have used tip cradles, but they are inappropriate in my world. Foot work is 1/2 of 1% of my job and this cow by E benefited greatly from my “quick” job. We do what we can do! Cheers!
