@@sandersson2813 What does it matter to you what people are anyway? Is it hurting you? People like celebrating their heritage, their family has left Scotland, they should be able to all call themselves ex pats. I would much rather believe a specialist on the matter than you.

@@LetsGoCatchUsSomeFISH Doesnt hurt me, bit it doesnt make someone an expat if they arent Scottish. I had an Irish Great, Great Grandparent, doesnt make me an Irish expat does it? No specialist has actually claimed that heritage makes you an expat though, so what are you on about?

I just ordered my second kilt. First was the Fraser Modern Hunting tartan, and the new one will be the Modern Red. There’s one Fraser tartan that’s sort of reserved for the 78th Fraser Highlanders, which was a regiment raised in Scotland in 1757. They fought in North America in the Seven Year’s War and were disbanded in Quebec in 1763, The modern 78th Fraser Highlanders is, according to the website of the Fort Calgary Garrison, “a North-America wide historical society dedicated to the preservation of the memory of the original Regiment and Canadian Military history of the period mid-1700’s and celebration of the contributions of the early Scots to Canadian culture.” The original regimental tartan is sort of reserved for their use. And, oddly, there are two American garrisons of this organization that is devoted to Canadian history. One is in Vancouver, Washington and the other in Atlanta.

@Michael Frazer There are a number of books on the subject, but most of the information you'll want can be found online. The difficulty with Fraser (the traditional spelling of which Frazer is a variant) is that there are two distinct clans, Clan Fraser in the Lowlands and Clan Fraser of Lovat in the Highlands, and one must determine of which one descends. If you can find out where your ancestors lived that will help determine to which clan you belong, though either/both would likely accept you by name alone. Slàinte agus deagh fhortan! 😁

I am , found to be the 22 great granddaughter of Sir John of Elderslie and he’s the brother of William Braveheart Wallace! I don’t know my tartan. I was so happy to know I was a descendant of Braveheart! Then I knew why I was tall and felt like swinging a broadsword and that I am committed to doing what I believe in. DNA 🧬 even that far is what makes us who we are. I love the idea perhaps I can go to see Scotland.

Half of Scotland's economy is based on tenth generation Americans calling themselves "Scottish" and looking to be Chief of the Clan McFake, don't upset the applecart. You can wear any fancy dress you like, but personally I reckon your "heritage" wears out with your ability to play sport for that particular nation.

Tartan has an ancient history. The earliest known tartan in Scotland can be dated to the third or fourth century AD. In other parts of the world, tartan cloth has been found dating to approximately 3000 BC. Virtually everywhere there was woven cloth, people created tartan designs. Yet only in Scotland have they been given such cultural significance. Why?
